In the Kable Records thread, Acoolcat asked about the Staples issues in the D-Town Devotional Series. Here is #204

BJL: I have 204-The Staple Singers. It's by far my all-time favourite recording by them - and that includes all their VJ, Riverside, Epic and other labels. What does 206 by The Stapleton Singers sound like? |

Robb - if you like #204 then you'll like #206. "Tell Him What You Want" is a version of "Jesus Is On The Mainline" and is uptempo. Pop leads this track until one of the girls takes over. "I Will Trust In The Lord" (mx MW 691) is a slower, waltz-time recording with another Pop lead. Pick up that copy on eBay if you can... (To all Staples fans - look out for a 2 CD retrospective on them soon from the 1950s to date. No D-Towns, however.) (Message edited by bjl on May 26, 2004) |

Thanks for the nice scans BJL. I think these D-Town releases date from c. 1965. So, I guess you don't have #205?

I don't think so but my records are scattered all over my house and it's sometimes hard to find stuff... I did find some more Detroit gospel 45s on labels like Ricare, Message (Hardye Productions), Fortune, Meldor, Staff, Knowles, Golden Age (Halo GS w/J J Barnes), Brighter Day so if any of these have any interest to anyone here, then shout. |

Hi BJL The only 45s I know of on Ricare are: #101 - Henry L Williams #1400 - Pat Paterson #1502 - St. Paul ACE Choir of Detroit #1501 - Ted Fowler & His Allstars I know Staff released some jazz stuff in the Fifties, and one early 60's disc by the Arabians. What year are the gospel 45s you have? And what year is the Golden Age disc? I'd like to see a scan of the label, please. |

Ricare R210 National Independent Singers 14807 I've Got A Home On The Other Side (J King)Alibri BMI Lead: J King 14808 Lord, Hear My Prayer (J Hendrix) Saudy BMI Lead: W West Both sides produced by J Hendrix. It's a Rite pressing and can be dated to 1965. Alibri was one of Joe von Battle's publishing companies - maybe he brought the group to Hendrix? Idessa Malone's Staff label began in the late 1940s and issued a lot of Detroit jazz, blues and gospel by artists like Red Miller, Milt Hinton, Baby Boy Warren, John Lee Hooker, The Detroiters and others. Mostly *very* rare. The Staff 45s I have are by The Mystics (#1001) - nice live gospel from 1965-ish and Rev C T Nelson (live preaching). Jean Knight's "Anyone Can Love Him" came out in the 1000 series (as well as Tribe). I'll scan the Ricare and Staff 45s but won't bother with the Staff 78s unless anyone is really interested. Did Idsessa Malone record Soul? Golden Age GA101 is late - 1981/1982. I'll scan this and the other ones that David wants tonight. Glad that this is of interest to you guys!

BJL The Arabians' 45 is an early soul disc. There must have been a link between her and James Hendrix - Edward Hamilton (lead) told me that the recording was made when they were with Mr. Hendrix at his Carrie label. |

Graham, As far as I remember Ricare 1502 is by the St.Paul AME Choir AME = African Methodist Evangelical ? Lead on this is Cornell Blakely. Nice to see a Detroit gospel thread - I'd been thinking about doing a thread when my notes are a bit better ordered. Davie |

Ricare was James Hendrix's label outlet for his Gospel productions. I assume there were several more releases on it. I've read that it was a subsidiary of Carrie, but often such labels were just another label owned by the same (or different combinations of co-owners)operated concurrently with another (or others). |

Robb I wonder if that Ted Fowler 45 on Ricare is connected to the Allstars' disc on Von?

Graham: Von had some Gospel on it. Does anyone know if Ted Fowler worked with Joe Von Battle during the late 50s? While we're at it, does anyone know if George Fowler and Ted Fowler were brothers? I guess it's possible that the All Stars on Von were also "Ted Fowler's All Stars". Von DID release some Gospel in the late '50s. The Ricare records were in the early '60s, so it COULD be the same group. I can't tell you anything about that. But, it is reasonable that when they were called "The All Stars" in the late '50s, Jr. Walker & The All Stars hadn't started yet (so no name conflict). But, by 1961, after Jr.'s group had gotten together their would have been confusion, so Ted Fowler could have changed the name to "Ted Fowler's All Stars". I hope someone else can tell us. But remember, there wre a lot of groups called "so and so's All Stars", even concurrently. Once a specific leader's name is used, the possible confusion is no more. BJL: Yes, I'd like to see scans of your Detroit Gospel 78s. |
