For those interested in Mary Wilson's recordings:

Carlo Visentin has created a petition to show "Motown-Select" that we would really like them to release the album "Mary Wilson" from 1979 onto CD with the 4 excellent unreleased Gus Dudgeon-produced songs ("Love Talk", "You Dance My Heart Around the Stars", "Save Me" and "Green River") as bonus tracks. If you would like to show your support, then please sign the petition at the following URL:

http://www.petitiononline.com/ mary79

Thank you so much. If you will, sign as soon as you can, because the petition closes August 29th, 2004, and we need as many signatures as we can get to have our voice heard by "Motown-Select".

My additional comments on the Motown board:

The four unreleased tracks are better than the album. The Gus Dudgeon's tracks were carefully selected, and with just four strokes, Dudgeon managed to showcase Mary's talent at its best for
1. romantic ballads ("Love Talk", "You Dance My Heart Around the Stars"),
2. up-tempo dancing numbers -in this case, disco ("Save Me") and
3. hard rock and roll (John Fogerty's "Green River", my favorite of the four tracks.)
Since Mary had been given ballads quite often during The Supremes days, it's natural that Dudgeon produced two to begin with, but in "Green River" Mary really feels released, free and having fun. Imagine how the complete album would have been!
It's a pity that most persons -and many Motown fans- have never heard these songs. If they had, I am sure, 100% sure, that they would agree that these tracks deserve an official release, and with what I think every time I listen to them and remember the tapes were rejected and given back to Mary: I can't help but think "What a crime, what an awful thing Motown did to Mary Wilson..." Shameful.
Taste is a subjective thing, I know, and some persons may not like the album "Mary Wilson", the Duarte & Busey songs, or Hal Davis production; but it deserves a CD re-issue, including the "Red Hot" extended remix by Rusty Gardner. In the net, I have seen "You Make Me Feel So Good" included among the tracks with best string arrangements of the disco era; "(I Love a) Warm Summer Night" is excellent; "Red Hot" was a hit in the discos and the other tracks are OK. Maybe it was put together in a rush, but I was not disappointed: it is up to Hal Davis' standard.
Since technically they would be new releases, it would be great if the 4 Dudgeon tracks opened the CD, followed by the album, and last but not least the Rusty Gardner extended remix:
1. Love Talk
2. You Dance My Heart Around the Stars
3. Save Me
4. Green River
5. Red Hot
6. I've Got What You Need
7. You Make Me Feel So Good
8. (I Love a) Warm Summer Night
9. Pick Up the Pieces
10. You're The Heart That Guides My Way
11. Midnight Dancer
12. Red Hot (extended version.)

One never knows what can happen. I even got a response from Judge Consuelo's office when I wrote that letter defending Mary Wilson and The Supremes as national institutions, from Kaaren Ragland's pretentions.

I just signed the petition.. I'd love for this to be released.. even if it's in a budget collection from Spectrum (just like the 'Supreme Florence Ballard' compilation).. I've warmed up to this album quite a bit since I got it.. Mary sounds great on the ballads, and she was quite the funky diva on "Red Hot"...Although if I'm not mistaken, I don't think Motown owns the masters to the Gus Dudgeon songs, they gave them back to Mary after she left.. I hope they will be willing to license them from her..

I signed the petition, but I don't think anyone
should be putting "phony" signatures on the
site, namely "Cindy Birdsong", "Florence Ballard",
"Diana Ross".

I do not know if the turmoil surrounding The Supremes story has an effect on the behavior of their fans, or vice versa. Sometimes one even feels ashamed of being a Supremes fan. Fortunately it is momentary, one gets over the feeling because in the end what really counts is their music, and the soul of eight individual performers that are just human beings like you and me. All of them were born like us under the same sky, and to God's eye no one is better than you or me. They, like all of us, have made mistakes, they suffer, they try to be happy, and they have had good times and bad times. Those eight women have received love from fans all over the world, and they must know very well who they are.
I do not understand why the differences between two or three persons who are not related to us, not even close to us in our daily lives, can determine how we react whenever the name of any of them is mentioned. It is a pity, because some of those persons who do must be around 60 years old, and they behave like children.
We have a saying in Spanish: "Cuando el ro suena, es porque piedras trae" (When the river sounds, it is because it's carrying stones), so I suppose (well, I know) that some stories and facts are real, many unpleasant things have happened from all fronts under "The Supremes bridge". But I do not assume all that as my business. I do not have to defend or attack any of them, I just may express my musical taste, whether I like something or not, and that is just it. I cherished every single track that I have featuring each of them doing solos.
In the end, the eight ex Supremes do not need us to turn into sycophants who fight each other about who has the best ("commercial") voice, about divadom, founding members, replacement members, being called Diane or Mari (by the way, Mari Wilson is the name of a late British singer) or the argument that songs should sound as they were originally recorded, sung or played. Imagine... Today no one could play a piano work by Mozart because that would not be the way it sounded when first performed (and who knows if he did...) I like some Beatles songs by other performers, I love many good Motown covers. But the fighting never ends. According to some, anything associated with the name Supremes should have one name stamped on it to be good. Time has simply proved that it was a myth, that talent was abundant among the eight ladies that formed the different line-ups of the trio. In God's plan (as opposed to the fans' schemes) there is room for each and every one of them.
