God Bless You Isaiah!

You have said it all and I want to know the same answers to the questions you asked! My step Grandpa was Thomas Beans Bowles who played a vital part in Motown's history yet he died in poverty even though I asked Mr. Slutsky about including him in the movie (he sent me a note stating he was in the credits).

I think many are honoring the wishes of the owners and moderators of this board,by not rushing to judgement or complicating the issue until all the facts are available to the public.
As with most members of this board,I am upset that this has happened, but don't believe that this is simply a case of Slutsky trying to exploit The Funk Brothers. For all the time, money, blood, sweat and tears he dedicated to SITSOM and other endevours,it doesnt make sense to me.I am willing to wait and find out the FACTS.My true loyalty will always be with The Funks, but I'm not as anxious as others to label Alan Slutsky a devil.

I'm going to allow thisthread to continue for the moment. Let's keep it fair though. Bear in mind we don't know all that Mr. Slutsky has had to deal with in his odyssey with the Funk Brothers. Nor do we know all that need be known regarding the grievences of the Brothers. Also keep in mind that there are law suits pending and I don't want to compromise the rights of either side with conversation that may be based on heresay or personal feelings.

What's up Isaiah???

My first knowledge of Sluts was with his great analytical book that broke down James Browns' rhythms...the drum patterns, bass patterns & guitar licks. This book comes with a CD so that you can follow along & if you'vwe never heard it, IT IS GREAT!!!

With that said, the only thing that I've been able to learn about this situation is that he's suing them for breach of contract. From what was stated, he's not looking for any compensation, he wants the to finish out the 2 year exclusive contract that he is said to have with them. Those are the only "on the record" remarks I have heard regarding this.

It was never mentioned exactly WHAT they did to breach this contract & as what I mentioned was stated publicly, I only wish that he had explained what the breach was publicly. I don't think it was fair for him, or his representatives, to release a statement that expressed alleged "misdeeds" of theirs without explaining the "misdeeds" that occurred.

In essence, what he has done is made public that they did something unethical, without saying what it was that they did. Once he or his representatives went that far, he might as well have crossed the t's & dotted the i's. I originally thought that this should be left alone here. But, once his representatives decided to make a public statement about it, I see no reason for us to ignore it. They brought this to the public, we certainly didn't! It seems to me that HIS representatives are the ones who have opened Pandoras Box by publicly commenting on this. In effect, they are the ones making an accusation & by firing the first media salvo, are potentially swaying public opinion before all of the facts of the case are known. I think that's a bit unfair.

Just one mans' opinion!

The media will do anything to get a story, searching in court records daily to find any information concerning entertainters. The good, the bad, the ugly. I doubt that Slutsky's company sought out the media.

This particular suit hasn't gone before the judge yet. They need not explain anything to us. They owe us nothing. This is not a popularity contest. This is business.

Where were all ye faithfuls when he was looking for funding for the documentary?

Thanks for some common sense Sis.

I know very little about Alan Slutsky but I am offended by the way he is being discussed in the opening message.

I am also offended by the heading on this thread.

There is no way I want this subject discussed on this forum until the court case is over.

SECOND REQUEST.

Uh Oh~~~~~~~~Sorry, but I don't feel too good about this thread~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't know a lot about Alan Slutsky, only that he resuscitated the Funk Bros. and I'm glad about that.
I think in all reality, he deserves to be rewarded for what he's done...and in all fairness, so do the Funk Bros.
...but again, I don't know a lot about Alan Slutsky, but I appreciate what he's done, as far as putting the FB's back in the Spot light.

In the spirit of fairness I have re-named the thread. Medusa, you are right on the money.Regardless of what is now taking place, Mr. Slutsky, through years of effort has brought the Funk Brothers to the attention of an otherwise unknowing public. He deserves the respect of Soulful Detroit.

I too am grateful to Alan Slutsky for the work he did in getting the Funk Bros. their long overdue public recognition for the incredible music they made. Let's not forget, though, that several others had a major role in moving the SITSOM project forward as well.

I don't know anything about his business arrangements with the Funks and I'm sad to hear of their current legal entanglements. I just hope the matter can be resolved amicably and soon.

I have know Alan personally for years.
I have even been to his home.
If it werent for him and his vision, the Funks would still be living in obscurity.

It was his vision, his dream and his tireless work which made it happen.
The funks are now stars, due to Alan's work and it is unfair to lambast a man who deserves every ounce of credit for this to happen.

I hear what everyone is saying & that's ok. I just feel that his representatives should have made NO public statements regarding this at all. You can't have it both ways. For myself, I haven't remarked who's right, who's wrong, nor have I dragged anyone through the mud. I just said that NO ONE should have made ANY public comments regarding this case. There are two words that are usually used in situations like this...."No Comment". Couldn't the representatives simply said that??? In light of the situation, it sounds like the fair thing to do.

He wrote the book about Jamerson back in 1989 when James and the Funk Bros were in obscurity.
The book drew some attention to them and deservedly put JJ on a pedestal with wonderful contributions from many great bass players.
Somehow he managed to get the documentary together many years later. Such a shame if he and the Funks have now fallen out. Worse it probably means that the band won't be on the road again!

(This is Craig Weiland: I am filing this post on behalf of Allan Slutsky who is not a member of Soulful Detroit and was unaware of this thread until it was brought to his attention)

From Allan Slutsky:

As far as comments to the press or in this or any other forum, Sandy Passman and I have made a total of ZERO comments. It wound up in the news because Reuters and other news Agencies routinely monitor all filed lawsuits in major cities looking for stories. I won't discuss the lawsuit in anyway other than to say this:

Before Sandy and I came on the scene, half of the Funk Brothers had not played their instruments or spoken to each other in decades. They had no thought ever of reforming. Fans of the Funk Brothers and industry people in Detroit and across the world had the same opportunity as Sandy and I did to try and bring them out of obscurity. BUT NO ONE LIFTED A FINGER EXCEPT FOR THE TWO OF US, PAUL JUSTMAN, AND OUR EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS PAUL ELLIOTT AND DAVID SCOTT.

In the first year as managers, Sandy Passman and I delivered the following to this group of musicians:

1)Two Grammys
2)One Lifetime Achievement Award from NARAS
3)More than 1000 print and broadcast media hits
4)A New York Film Critics Circle Award
5)The Natl. Society Of Film Critics Award
6)1 feature length documentary released worldwide
7)One heralded World Debut at the Apollo theater in NYC
8)1 DVD released worldwide
9)3 CD releases
10)A fully produced and award winning stage show that consistently generated rave reviews
11)A well organized, efficient touring infrastructure
12)Approx. fifty concert dates
13)Numerous major TV appearances including "The Tonight Show," "American Idol," "Motown 45," and "The Wayne Brady Show."
14)Production Of a full line of merchandise including tour books, shirts, hats, etc.

We're very proud of what we accomplished. As for the personal attacks:

I have seventeen years and 50,000 hours of my life in this project. Including the up-front production money I made on the film and soundtrack CD, money made on the Jamerson book (which was a charity), and money made from managing the Funks, I am still in the hole for approximately $30,000.

Where were some of the people (who are completely uninformed) currently throwing trash at me when I was living in pawn shops selling off my instruments, record collection, jewelry and other possessions to keep the project alive?

I don't have to answer to anyone other than the man upstairs and neither does Sandy. We paid our dues.

Allan Slutsky worked pretty tirelessly to tell a story that most people didn't know and few people thought anyone wanted to know. If he did what he did with the primary intent of enriching or promoting himself, he sure as hell went about it the wrong way.

I find it strange how the rhetoric in the initial post increases from "casting Stevie and Smokey in a bad light" to having "shot Stevie's name publicly through hot grease".

When he makes candid and truthful comments, they are characterized like that, and yet the person who is licking his chops to mis-characterize him wonders why his "cream puff" (that'll be the day) questions go unanswered? Hilarious.

Regards,
Ken

Craig And Alan,

Thank you for your post. I didn't know of the source of the stories. I do know that it was plastered all over the internet at various sites & in news stories. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this. I can't say who did what, much less, who's right or wrong. I merely thought that NOTHING should have been said about this by anyone & stated such.

As you pointed out, the "information" was put out by various news media. I only wish that I had the article that put words in your mouths. There was a "News" story on the net, where the info was printed as DIRECT QUOTES from you gentlemen. Interestingly, this page is no longer available. I guess that this is proof once again that one has to beware of "sources". As that was my primary complaint, I apologize to both of you for believing a "credible" news source. It is obvious that you are allowing this situation to run its natural course in the court of law. That is how it should be.

As regards your work with The Brothers, I think that it was great. I was glad to see these gentlemen receive some long overdue & unfortunately, in some cases posthumously, well deserved recognition. I certainly appreciate both of you taking the time to clear up any misconceptions. I think that your efforts were appreciated by fans everywhere & the project definitely brought The Funks from out of the shadows, indeed!

I recognize that you are probably aggravated about having your intentions & integrity questioned. I can understand that if that's the case. To be honest with you, I think that this thread has been beneficial. You both have come aboard & given us the view from the other side of the fence & that can't be bad.

Often, many feel that a documentary such as yours just springs up from nowhere. Most of us don't know the hard work & yes COLD HARD CASH that goes into such an project. Many of us don't understand the funding process, much less what transpires when the funding gets low & you're perhaps 3/4 of the way done.

You have had the opportunity here to voice your side of the situation, to explain just what it took to make all of this a reality & to clear up some misconceptions. I believe that Isaiah posed questions that were whispered, yet not verbalized. Although you certainly owe no explanations to us, you have explained & spelled out, just what went down from your side of things. As such, I can't see that as a negative. You were able to come here & give us information that we weren't privy to. You didn't have to do so & I respect you for coming here & doing so.

I would also say that I would hope that the two of you will continue to visit this forum. Not just for situations such as this, but for general musical conversation, which happens to be quite informative.

I will say in parting, that this situation grieves me. It truly saddens me as this was such a glorious triumph for all. I just wish that this never happened. Regardless, I only hope that this entire situation will be rectified amicably. It would be sad to see such a heart warming story end any other way.

Regards,
Juice

This proves the danger of uninformed speculation. I monitor news stories on the Funks quite closely, and I can say I have seen not one story that quoted either Allan Slutsky or the Funks, on this matter.

Most of the stories that ran were based on the original Billboard/Reuters story, which had no quotes.

Hi Satipe,
I met your grandpa Beans when they The Funk Bros came into town and recorded a few session here in Chicago many many yrs ago, when Andre Williams produced some sessions. Not just to throw you a line, I always loved Bean's Flute playing. Wasn't he a baritone and tenor saxist too? He was underrated for his flute playing, I loved it all the same. Including Beans, I always wondered why wasn't Maurice King mentioned or we're included? I can't blame the Funks, but I know Maurice was inclued and considered apart of The Funks.

Ralph,

This began as a feel good story. It was a tr.iumphant emergence from the shadows for The Funks. I honestly hope that you can help this to have a amicable ending. It shouldn't have to end this way, it was one of the best musical stories that we've had in many a day. It's not for me to speculate on right or wrong, I just want to see the harmony revisited by all parties. This story deserves the happy ending that we believed we had.

As a fan, I know that this will sound corny & stupid but, to both sides I say: Stop! In the name of love... Love for the music, for the legacy, for the memories, for it all. Surely fellas, there's got to be a way for this to end the way that this project started. This is just too beautiful a thing for it to end this way. This has just been too uplifting to end this way. Please, if there's any way possible, please straighten this out amicably.

I have faith in all concerned that this can be done!

Respectfully to all!!

Yes Medusa, I know what you mean. Many times what we think in our minds looks drastically different when we see it in print. Because of this, I began writing out my responses as text files. After letting some time pass, I re-read my post to see how it sounds after a cooling-off period. You'll be surprised how some of your thoughts sound when writing in the heat of passion. I find it to be helpful. In the future, whenever you feel strongly about something, write it down first & come back to it later. This method has really helped me here recently & believe me, it works! Trust me, it does. I'm sure that Ralph, Vonnie, Sister D & Moe can vouch for me on that.

Let's not be hasty, Sis...this place wouldn't be the same without you (and Medusa). In Isaiah's defense, it always amazes me (and often annoys me) the way posts are sometimes taken out of context on this forum, usually with the end result being personal assaults which require the moderator's censorship. Everyone has a right to his/her opinions, even if they are "uninformed", and I can't understand why some of us can't respect that. We can disagree (or not) without causing animosity. I hope.

For the record, I enjoy reading Isaiah's posts, just as I enjoy reading MOST of the regular contributors here. I'm not taking sides and I don't have any particular axe to grind here, I just think a great forum like this one should be someplace where EVERYONE can express him/herself without generating ugliness and hostlity.

That's a good suggestion Juice..Thanx!
Getting back to you Sis,
Now you know if I had to represent Detroit, I'll have to hang on, get myself in gear, and not let anything/anyone get to me (hahaha)LOL
I think it would be a much better idea if you stay on the Throne of Detroit. You have a more mild manner, you're calm, you know more celebrities (on personal basis)...I can be a very nice/sweet/loving/under & Overstanding person...BUT I'm a bit more Aggresive and I sometimes stick holes in folks feelings, I just may have to turn somebody to stone(LOL). So, will you please, please, please stay and represent Motowns soulful Detroit here on this Forum ? Will ya do that?
P.S. I believe there are lots of folks here on SDF who would hate to see you go, and you can believe that.

Sister Detroit,

Respectfully I beg to differ with you. I would care greatly if you left here. I have grown to respect you a great deal & if I feel as though I'm going to say something wrong, you are one of the few people that I always come to first. As such, your input & cool head will always be an asset here. I could not imagine Soulful Detroit without Soulful Sister Detroit! Think about that, you are highly respected & always beloved by all whom I speak with. I hope that you would reconsider your position & perhaps, we can let this one go. There are going to be no answers satisfactory to all & further speculation, replies, etc is not going to fix this situation. I believe that these gentlemen will rectify this in a respectful manner. That is all that we can hope for.

Sister Detroit, hopefully your wish will come true & we can turn the page on this.

Many of us care that you're here & I've heard nothing but accolades regarding you. You are a very important part of Soulful Detroit & please don't ever think otherwise!! Thank you for hearing me out Sis!

I have always maintained the Sis is the conscience of Soulful Detroit. And it is indeed true.

Hi SisD;
I and alot of others on this forum have a deep respect for you. Both you & Vonnie bring a good feeling of calmness & love to this forum. So please don't you ever leave, we all need your calming, no nonsense, honest spirit here. In a world where people are always trying to create or push some s--t on someone because of their own insecurities its a blessing to have someone like you on onboard who can be objective & fair.
Thanks for your presence SisD, I think its safe to say we all love you!

Gary, Juice, Medusa, Ralph, and Soul Sister. It's nice to know I have cyber-buddies who care.

The Funks are so close to my heart, I am just pained. I know I can always skip over the thread, and not read it. But I just don't want anything to harm the negotiations of this Union. Perhaps I am just a little too sensitive when it comes down to this dispute.

Please forgive me everyone for acting so childish.

Sister Detroit!!

My dear one!!! You are not acting childish here. You honestly care about these people. I'm a fan, who never knew of most of these fine people. I knew of the main players through books & things as such. I care because I knew of their contributions. You care because YOU KNOW THEM. That's a tremendous difference. You've probably sat with them, talked with them, ate with them & know their families as well. This has got to be personal for you, as well as painful to see. You owe us no apologies for being emotional.

All that your reaction means is one thing.............YOU'RE HUMAN!!! It means that you have a heart & don't want to see anything bad come from this situation. How can we possibly fault you for that?

It is because of your feelings & others like you who have a personal attachment to this that I feel that this thread should simply be burned!! At this point, it's too personal & this is not a court of law. There is simply nothing left that could be considered good that would be derived from any further discussion. It should burn!!!

I'm on a very bad dialup connection and I can't see the whole width of the screen (particularly the author field) without scrolling, but when I first read the post, it pissed me off instantly, before I knew who the author was.

However, the defenses of that post that I'm now reading are based entirely on people defending a friend. That's understandable, but please don't deceive youselves about what that post was about.

Just go back and read the first paragraph carefully, and see how it manages to imply so much negative information, all of which can later be defended with "I was just saying...", or "I was just trying to ask a question". Meanwhile, the damage is done - the implication is out there, and this being the internet, the innuendo, whether true or false, lives and prospers long after this discussion is finished.

I don't want to go through the post point by point, because I don't want to repeat the implied accusations. But I hope that each of you will see that post for what it is. The only mystery to me is what would motivate someone to write something so comepletely mean-spirited, and based soley on speculation and innuendo.

Hi Steve, thanks for responding. Considering that I'm one of Isaiahs defenders, I've decided to respond to your posting as such. First of all, I've defended plenty of folks here who I didn't particularly like on numerous occasions. If you'd like, you can refer back to the old forums & see the occasions where I defended someone. If someone came at you wrong, I'd defend you as well. So you owe me an apology, as I'm not the type to defend anyone unless a defense is merited.

You see the problem with me is that I have a conscience & dislike anyone piling on or flaming another individual. I was raised to stand up when something wrong is occurring. In short, I guess that I'm a nosey person with a big mouth. I'm sorry about that, I just can't help it.

I've observed Isaiah get dragged through the mud on several ocassions for merely DEFENDING himself. He posts something that some folks disagree with & they have attacked him FIRST!!! If you don't believe this, go check the archives....I DID!!! And this is no mere speculation, its there in good old black & yellow. If you'd like, I can send you the Greatest Hits Vol 1, 2 & 3. I've seen the man beat on like a drum up in here, so, please don't preach to me about defense. Go back & look at the archives & then come here & tell me all about fairness!!!

I read the ENTIRE original post. You can't pick the bits & pieces that you choose to comment on. If you're going to accuse me for defending Isaiah, then don't do it out of context & please don't try to tell me what my defense is predicated on. It's responses like yours that create misunderstandings here.

You have an opinion & that's cool. But then you presume to be able to read my mind & state WHY I defended a man. Then to further inflame the situaton, you decide what part of his post I should use to form my opinions. I don't think that's the right way to go about it. Do you???

From what I read in that paragraph, he stated that he asked some questions that went unanswered. The QUESTION was as follows & I quote:

1)when he was going to introduce us, and the world, to his OWN material...

Isaiah went on to state, and again, I quote: To date, the man has not answered any of my questions, but if he wants to promote himself, or his books, and cd's, he'll be up in here in a hurry, trying to get into YOUR and MY pockets... Well, before we part with our hard-earned dollars, I think this guy should be willing to answer a few cream puff questions - not just the questions that put him on a pedastal, and glorify his "rescuing" of the Funks...

So Steve, what exactly was all of the negative information that was contained in the first paragraph???? What grievous sin did Isaiah commit by stating that he never received answers to questions that he posed? What earth stopping revelation did Isaiah reveal that was so devestating in your mind??? Please tell me, I must have missed something.

I'm trying to work with you here, but, I'm not understanding you on this one. What I see implied here is that Isaiah is saying that his questions were not answered. Exactly who does this implication harm??? Whose reputation is harmed because Isaiah said that his questions went unanswered??? What innuendo are you referring to as regards that first paragraph??? Most importantly, who on the internet would find that statement to be newsworthy anyway??? What, is there going to be a big headline that staes: "ISAIAHS QUESTIONS GO UNAWSWERED, THE WORLD'S IN DANGER"???? Seriously, I'm trying to work with you here. But, you give me so little to work with.

So, with that in mind, with all due respect, before you ever dare to speak for me, or purport to assume what's inside my head, let me give you a suggestion: YOU RE-READ the first paragraph & get back to me. If you're basing your response to me, as a defender of Isaiah, you've got to come better than you just did. Maybe, you were referring to the second paragraph, I don't know.

Please re-read the ENTIRE post & get back to me. That post was as weak as Roy Jones was 2 Saturdays ago. Please come correct with your next post..........NEXT????

Just got home and checked out this thread, and I must say that I'm taken aback by the way it has morphed.

Sis, you know that you are an intregal person on SDF, and your wisdom and input would be sorely missed :-(. Lil Sis, take heart and all will be straightened out.

Juice and Medusa, thanks for your insight and restraint, and you should be ready to kabongg on cue if needed.

Glad to see my SoulSister back in the house! I'm sorry that you had to come home to this fray, but it will all be resolved.

David and Ralph, please remember that some folks who posted on this thread are passionate about the artists, music and SDF. I hope that Zaya is given a chance to explain his point of view fully. Maybe, the title of his post was taken the wrong way.

We on SDF should step back and let the appropriate negotiations in this ongoing dispute take place. We should all know that there is more than one side to a story. We all love the Funks and are saddened by this debacle. I'm also sure that Allan Slutsky feels the same way about the Funks, or he would never have undertaken such a monumental task.

And To All On SDF Remember,

Loose Lips Sink Ships

Ok, I just got back and OMG!!!!
I hate it when things like this happen here on this Forum between us Grown Ups!
It seemslike some of ous are forced to take sides and that's very UN-cool.
I don't know Alan Slutsky personally, but again I really appreciate what he has done...I also like everyone here and that most definately includes Zaya/Isaiah/Zeke...
When we post our comments/opinions/responses on this Forum, it has no real bearing on who any of us really are...I've said some things that I know a lot of folks here didn't/don't agree with(so have some other Forum members)...and at the time I commented, I didn't think I was being offensive.
I'm only hoping it's not a matter of just not liking someone or not.
I also know and understand we can't please everyone or make everyone like us, but as grown ups, we should be able to tolerate eachother as individuals...need we remember we don't live with or sleep with each other. (???)
I hope David & Ralph don't mind me talking like this. My point??? I hate to see "anyone" including Isaiah get banned, but I have no control over that. I know Isaiah quite well, and I know he didn't mean anything to come to this...but he will be missed.

Hi Gang. You will probably notice I deleted numerous threads. Apologies to Steve S, Moe, Juice and whomever else. Before you get too upset with me, I deleted one of my own also. I think Medusa's above message kind of explains it all ( thank you Medusa ) and I'm not going to allow this little misunderstanding to get out of hand. The messages I deleted seemed to deal most directly with the controversy and by no means suggests that I thought the individual posters were wrong. You guys have me as your moderator...live with it.

Ralph,

I have no problem if you delete any of my posts. This thread got a little out of hand & if you felt the need to delete any of my posts, I have no problem with you doing so. No offense taken whatsoever. You were caught between a rock & a hard place on this one. This was a hard one for you to win, so, do what you have to do. You owe me no apologies at all. I'm just sorry if it leads to Isaiah being banned, I think that would be rather extreme.

Just tell me Ralph, what can we do to salvage this thread, is it possible???

I guess that remains to be seen Juice. I am reluctant to delete the thread because, in all fairnes, it states Allan Slutsky's admirable accomplishments. I think the nature of Soulful Detroit owes him that. If any of the Funks would care to respond I would welcome their input. However, due to the nature of law suits I'm not expecting this. Furthermore, I'm not looking for a hostile debate on the subject. I have stated many times that there is much we are not aware of from both camps. I suppose if there were to be any criticism of Isaiah it would be that he seemed to address Allan in an accusitory tone while not really knowing the entire story. And as was pointed out, Allan did not owe Isaiah ( or anyone for that matter ) any explanations. This is simply none of our business. Perhaps the remaining days of this thread could best be used to celebrate what did take place between Allan and the Funks and give our best wishes to both sides that they may find some common ground and reach mutual understandng that would benifit all concerned, including the fans of the Funk Brothers.

I'm sorry Satipe, I had to delete your post also. I knew your uncle just as I knew the Funk Brothers that are no longer with us. It is a shame they died in poverty. Many musicians have. This is not the fault of Allan Slutsky though. He did all he could to change those circumstances. Please try and understand.

Ralph,

At this point, I believe that everything that could be said, has been said. From this point forward, I don't wish to have to defend Isaiah with every post. I feel that the point has been made & honestly, there's no need to bash a man who isn't free to defend himself. That would be grossly unfair. If I have to defend him, I will. I would defend you & anybody else, you know my nature. I think that you know that I try to be fair & reasonable. I think that you've come to know me a little & you know that I'm not a jerk.

If we're going to talk about The Funks & the project, cool. I just don't want this to turn into a bash Isaiah fest. As Alan was able to refute & speak for himself, I feel that we should move on from there. The only way to move forward, is to move forward. If anyone is truly interested in moving beyond this, they will follow the sentiments of the last sentence of your post at 8:26 P.M. Anyone who fails to do so, is just interested in keeping the fire burning. In that spirit, I'm willing to move along, is everyone else???

If not, then I think that your last sentence is the perfect epitaph for this thread. If no one wants to follow your lead, then this thread should rest in piece. There's no need for further controversy, wouldn't everyone agree???

PLEASE!!! LET"S MOVE ON!!!!

Satipe - How are you? It's great to have you aboard. No, you didn't open up a can of worms. These folks over here, act like that all the time, including myself. :-)

There are quite a few musicans and other Motown individuals who feel slighted. However, they were no less important than those Allan chose to focus on. Perhaps in the future, there will be more documentaries like SITSOM, which will explain another sides of Motown.

I know your uncle (or father) Dennis very well. Both my brothers have played bass for him on numerous occasions. Dennis informed me that he has a zip file with a website of your grandfather, but did not know how to put it on the internet. This would be a great start focusing on the great and well known Beans Bowles.

You just keep on coming back. Your opinion is very important to us. We would love to hear some of your great memories about your grandfather. We adored him as well.

Satipe, you have my love & if it means anything to you at all, I admire the work of Mr Beans Bowles. I am interested in hearing your memories of him. Please tell us more about him, I want to hear more of your GOOD memories of him. That would be the best honor that you could give him & I believe that he is worthy. Let me have some of the many positive memories that I'm sure that you have to share. I never met him, introduce him to me here. I'd love to hear his story & I think you're just the one to tell me.

With that in mind good Satipe, could you please inform me about Mr Bowles? I can't change the past but, you can let us know of the proud accomplishments of this fine man. I'd love to hear any stories that you'd care to share with us. I hope that you'll take me up on this offer. I'm sure that there is much for us to learn about him. The deletions are fine with me Ralph. But to offer balance to what remains, I must say that I only recall Allan Slutsky posting on the forum a handful of times. In each case, he was either answering questions about SITSOM that had been floating about, or providing information about Funks CD / DVD release dates or concert schedules. I don't ever recall him promoting personal projects, or ever even mentioning his other books. In fact, I don't recall him ever talking about himself outside the context of the Funks. I am quite certain that he never solicited anything on the forum other than support for the Funks.

You are absolutely correct.

What appeared in the top (now deleted posting) was a disgrace.

It was also ignorant and dangerous.

Those that flaunt our simple rules and try to drag us down will be joining the cat who used every one of his 9 SoulfulDetroit lives and still couldn't get the message.

Being the fair minded person that you've shown to be, I can understand your decisions. You have been gracious and so giving in your perserving of the music and artists that are discussed on SDF. I hope that all who post try to understand that your decisions are for the perserving of integrity on this site. I received this letter from Allan Slutsky and am posting it withhis permission.

Hey Ralph,

Quite an interesting day I woke up to. A few observations which you can post or not post depending on how you feel about it.

1)I don't even know who Isaiah is. I'm not a regular on Soulful Detroit. I only check in ocassionally when someone calls me and tells me there's something I should look at. I can't even currently post as I don't have a password, and before having a password was necessary, I probably posted four or five times in a two year period.

I never tried to hawk any of my products on line or "glorify myself" asI was accused. If I posted in the past, it was always limited to clarifying some info that was inaccurate. As far as not responding to Isaiah's questions, it's like that old addage, "Ifa tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it. . . . " I can't respond to a question I'm not even aware of. I never read any of his posts until today. I wasn't aware I was was in a courtroom docket being interrogated and judged on my answers or lack of them.

2)As far as trashing Stevie and Smokey, I'm not aware of ever doing that other than to respond to journalists questions as to why they weren't in the film. I don't think I was ever asked about Smokey more than once and regarding Stevie, I basically said we asked and were told he didn't want to do it. That's not exactly character assassination.

3)Regarding the Beans Bowles and Maurice King situations and why they weren't featured in the film: Every film has to have a focus. The focus of this film is the Funk Brothers. Ifa film is too spread out and has too many characters, there is no time to do any character development or make the audience give a damn about them. The thirteen that we concentrated on in our film pushed that concept to it's limit with each Funk Brother only getting a few minutes of quality screen time to tell their indivudual story.

The film wasn't called "Every person who ever recorded or worked at Motown." Beans was a friend of mine and I liked him very much. We talked on the phone numerous times. I also got to know Maurice who was a gentleman and a great musician. However, neither of them was a Funk Brother and I'm sure the Funk Brothers would agree. Important Motown figures? Yes. Funk Brothers? No.

Beans played on a few early tracks and then was part of management for a few years working on the tours. He was gone before the glory years of the company started. Maurice was also more involved with the live shows and never played in the studio with the guys.

4)I find it astounding that this absurd "non-topic" has generated more posts that when we won the Grammys last year. A sad commentary on our society.

All the best,

Allan

Thanks Ralph.

Please extend my thanks to Allan for taking this so graciously.

To everyone else :

This is an embarassment to me.

Can people understand why I am so angry?

It is posted on SoulfulDetroit, that's why. Who co-owns SD? ME.

Now anyone else who feels like spreading shit, please move on, because you don't deserve to be here.

Aother letter from Allan. Posted with his permission.

Hi Ralph,

It's a funny thing. Our deluxe CD box set just came out. Disc Two is 21 remixes from the original multi-track tapes from Motown's vaults. It's the only thing I've ever bragged about in my life. Those 21 remixes took Harry Weingerand I around 30 sessions over a two year period. It was done on spec by us as we never knew if Universal would actually release it. It was a hope and a prayer. That being said, it's a landmark concept. No one has ever had the balls to release something like this where vocals are stripped off a collection of major hits and all you are left with is the bare unadorned groove. But it's far more than just Karaoke, as sometimes we break things down to just bass, or just the guitar section, etc. It's purpose was to give the listener an inside look at the bare naked parts they never heard before.

It's a very academic, almost anal approach. But it's also very musical and emotional. It may only sell four copies. It may sell four million. Who knows? It's undiscovered territory. But for these fans who claim to be so obsessed with the Funk Brothers, it should be a major event. However, it was such a major event that the thread addressing the issue on SDF generated only around twenty posts in a three week period. This idiotic non-issue that popped up yesterdday generated fifty in a 24 hr. period. Pretty amazing.

Thanksfor keeping things sane.
Allan

Hey Slut
I told you before and I'll repeat it again. You held true to your passion to make this project happen, any and all negative comments to the effect of what is happening today should be ignored. I was playing the video for my kids of your announcing your plans to do this when we were at Mike M. for a reunion and your passion than was just as strong as it is now. Just keep going forward as you are and you will be okay.

Your Majestic Brother

Majestics -

This was your first post in the Forum and your first two words are "Hey Slut." I think it is tacky that you did not use the proper full name "Slutsky", especially when you know how shortening it to the first four letters sounds.......

Whether it was innocent or not - it looks rude, dude....

Allan,
Kudos go out to you and Harry for putting together such a masterful interpretaion of the music that we all know and love.

As a musician myself, and one who's experience was inspired by the sounds of Motown, I can truly appreciate and understand what you and Harry have setforth to accomplish.

Once again congratulations for putting together such a fine example of the sound of Motown, and I hope that millions more will feel as I do!!

BTW, Once again, I commend you for SITSOM and all you had to go through to make it happen.

I am hopeful that when Mr. Slutsky comes on SD again, that he will answer or acknowledge most of the posters here who were 100% positive regarding his yeoman's task with the Funks, and thanked him for his work and dedication.
I believe that one can love Alan and the Funks too.
Perhaps I am being too simplistic or too naive about all this, but I wish that people will also come on the forum and respond to the overwhelmingly positive responses that they receive.

Motownboy
I've known Allan since 1967 when we played in a soul band together for a couple of years through high school and we have remained friends ever since. There is absolutely no connotations to my opening greeting in my message, other than the nickname that we used when we played together. The context of the message is all positive which in view of the messages that followed fall in the same path. No harm, no foul.

Peace

Satipe,

I BEG YOU TO PLEASE LET THIS SUBJECT DROP

As I stated in a previous thread there is more than one side to every story. This matter is in litigation and that is where it should be decided. I am a legal professional, and it would go against all legal principals to discuss a matter that is under litigation on a public forum. I would not ask any of the persons involved to explain any details of a legal matter. Please wait for the details to be settled.

Thank You Very Much

I think Allan's done a wonderful thing by documenting an important piece of American history, one too few people in this country appreciate.
In-depth research into jazz or blues or any honest artistic endeavor is motivated by passion for the art and great love and respect for the artists. Mr Slutsky's Jamerson book is a wonderful outcome of his feelings for the music and the artists who created it. To suggest he spent twenty years documenting the music and artists he loves for personal or financial gain is just plain ignorant; he cared enough to document it.
Anyone who makes such a statement has never trod that path.
I can only imagine the frustrations and dead ends with which he dealt while trying to translate that book into film, and the Funk Bros into a touring band.
The only saving grace for him must be the fact that people attack him, question his motives, but praise his book and his movie. For a researcher that is high praise indeed. Great job, man!

Jim, I'm with you on this one.

I think the Funks are being badly advised here
- the only people who gain from these cases are
the lawyers who're quite ready to tell you
"You've a good case there" when what they really mean is "I can see a lot of bucks for me here"

Let's hope this can be sorted out amicably - it's
a tragedy that what should be the Funks finally
getting the recognition they richly deserve will
be remembered in the history books for this
dispute with Allan's firm.

Davie,
I wouldn't want to speculate on how the Funks are being advised at this point for various reasons listed above and elsewhere on the forum since knowledge of the suit became public. Lawsuits get filed for a lot of reasons, and I bet that "lawyers are itching to file them" is not even in the top 5. :-)

Anyway, I share your hope that the whole dispute can be settled as amicably as possible.

Regards,
Ken

I totally agree with Vonnie!!!!
This thread should've been deleted...Isaiah has been banned for starting this thread, then why haven't this thread been deleted?...What's the point in continuing with it???
The comments are gonna keep coming, until the wrong thing is said (AGAIN) and someone else from the Forum will be banned...
What is the purpose of it, since the subject is in the hands of the courts...
This is actually dangerous for legal purposes, so this thread should be deleted, stopped, discontinued immediately.

Ok, that's all well & Ok...but may I remind you that when everyone was blasting R Kelly, Aretha, and most recently Marvin Gaye, on a very disrespectful thread, even including their very personal business(true or false)...where was the respect then?
Now, if we're gonna be fair here, then come on Ralph let's be fair to one AND all...we should be fair to EVERYONE we claim to love and preserve their soulful talents.
Mr. Slutsky knows very well how much we appreciate him and his work...and the Funk Bros. darn well know how much we've appreciated them through the years and at the present.
I believe things here on the Forum will be much more smoother, if everyone here respected each person/persons a like, without the bias treatment.
Since we're all adults here, we should be more of an example for our younger generations, who sometimes drop in on this forum.
So, what are we teaching & showing them when we bash & Trash that which we are suppose to appreciate & Love?
I hope you undersatnd what I'm trying to say here and I'm not in no way trying to offend anyone here...Just trying to find out what is the rhyme & reason for do's and dont's, cans and cannots to certain individdduals...thanx 4 reading all this (smile).

TO Alan Slutsky,

No I'm not against you. I just wonder why Maurice King wasn't included, which you've stated ever graciously. I can understand time limits and restrictions. It's like a book writer can include other's and some can't always do so. Though my comments may have to you sounded offensive, in fact they weren't at all. Actually, I've read many wonderful things that we're said about Beans and Maurice in all honesty and fairness Alan, I was only asking a question-period. In all due I still give ya props for at least including both these great men names in the crediting.

By yourself being a musician and by me being a musician, maybe not on the same caliber or level, maybe some songs that we're composed maybe weren't meant for brass and reeds to some degree then? But it sure as hell needed it some key elements in songs. See, I'm a horn lovin' type of guy. I just want you to understand what my post comments we're really about.

I agree with Vonnie, this unfortunate situation should be dropped. I'll comment no more on this thread.

Ken, you're right.

I decided to stay out of this thread when it started as I knew it would get like this -
I find that I personally can't keep objective about it.

We'll have to wait and see how things pan out
- I just hope that it can be done without too
much pain to all the parties involved.

I suppose at the root of things I just feel sad
that what should be the Funks' shining hour
seems to be getting tarnished. I'll keep my
thoughts to myself and keep my fingers crossed.

My apologies to both sets of legal advisers
for suggesting they might have had less the best
of their clients' interests at heart.

I received The Deluxe Edition two CD box set of SITSOM today. I was very excited when I bought it, but now I'm kind of depressed after reading this post and don't know when I'll listen to the tunes. Perhaps in a day or two or three I'll give it a play.

Allan is somewhat of a hero to me for bringing attention and recongnition to the Funk Brothers and he deserves major credit and acclaim (which he apparently strives to remind us of with the above posts from himself and/or others on his behalf).

I'm just wondering why the Brothers aren't replying to this thread?
Without their input, all seems one-sided to me.

Yea yea yea...I know...they're too old and too busy for this site...right Slut?

Sis,
Now I know that this will sound crazy, but,Medusa made getting slapped in the head sound so devine. I mean, I was sitting here, ALMOST minding my own business & I read Medusas' words to David & suddenly I thought to myself: "Damn, I want Medusa to slap me all upside my head...like a drum...all upside my head, like Little Stevie did those bongos back in '63!!!

Remember that song & I'll paraphrase: She Hit Me & It Felt Like A Kiss? What do you suppose that means Sis??? Does that mean that I'm weak for feminine wiles, or does it simply mean that I need a slap in the head???? THAT QUESTION IS FOR SISTER ONLY!!! I already know what the general consensus would be. That's why I asked Sis :-)

Wicked,

There it is. Brother, I salute you on your good taste!!! See, our Medusa is all shy but, she ain't slick. You just said it Wicked, even back in the day, she had Phillippe testifying about her. Remember, Phillippe used to be in The Motor City!!

See Medusa, the streets been watching, streets are always watching. Now....about that slap upside the head.... :-)

Man,things are going to get real dry around here.

1-- Would someone PLEASE call the governor and get him to grant a pardon to Isaiah QUICK!!!

2--Would someone run to the beer store and pick up a twelve pack and deliver it to Mike McCleans house, pour him a beer and turn on his computer with S.D.on the screen.

3--Would someone PLEASE search all the golf courses in southern Califonia and find Stu.Then snatch his golf clubs away from him and fling them into the Pacific ocean. Then sit him down in front of his computer and tell him IT'S TIME TO START!!!

It's like the three guys that always made you laugh or made class interesting got kicked out of school. Now you know that class is going to be a lot dryer with out the interesting, funny, and yes sometimes caustic comments these three had.

JuiceFree - You are free to be slapped by Medusa. You do not need any bodyguards. :-)

Magyared - I'm hoping the Funks will continue to respect the legal system by not responding to any public questions about the dispute. Especially to those members whose only intent is to cause harm by continuing to post negative remarks, even though their personal opinions will not be considered in court.

That said, I'm sure everything will be resolved amicably. So, please enjoy your new Deluxe SITSOM cd.

Here is a quote from Sir DMeikle:

"There is no way I want this subject discussed on this forum until the court case is over.

SECOND REQUEST."

I hope the members can understand the scottishman's instructions. If they cannot read, they should read his lips.

Hey Wicked,

Soul Sister says that we look alike. Read the thread where you posted pictures about Jimmy. So I guess that there could be a case of mistaken identity, you know what I mean. Besides Wicked, I've worked hard to earn her love!!! Anyway, blame David, he made the intial slap offer. I just offered to be his stunt double :-)

Hey!!!!

Well look who's feeling frisky today!!! Anyway, Juice don't play that! I'm an exclusive kind of guy. Besides, if you get the right one, there's no room for two...hear me talking now! Remember Trix is for kids, but Juice is for adults. Know what I mean???

Now Medusa, don't be starting something up in here. Now, I'm gonna be nice Medusa. I'm going to remain the gentleman that mother raised. I guess I'm gonna have to Hitchhike to Detroit!!! What day was that again??? This is one beating I'm coming to get!! It's ok, you can abuse me Medusa! You can whup me upside the head like I'm Rodney King. I promise, I won't press charges! This has the makings of another thread.

Anyway, I'm intrigued, tell me more. Tell me about my eyes. So Medusa, Which side of the head are you going to hit me on??? I await your response.

OH BY THE WAY!!! Thanks for your permission Sister Detroit....I needed that. Hey Sis.....isn't this fun???

Being in Cali...it's like a 3rd and 40 situation for the Lions....but I see the GOAL and I have one helluva stiff arm for anybody in my way. Oh...and Juice...I'm an exclusive kinda fella too, but it's up to the beautiful Medusa to decide if she wants a Pepsi (The Right One Baby)...or the UnCola...(Never Had It And Never Will). Vonnie...looks like someone forgot to check his ego at the door !! (LOL) And...in reference to the question Bro. Juice posed a few posts ago...though I would normally refrain from answering for the beautiful lady, personally, I think she would like her meal in the presence of someone who appreciates her outward beauty...but can look into her divine eyes (the windows to the soul)..and can see that she is equally as beautiful within.

Well Wicked,

You are a most worthy opponent. What I would do AGAIN is invite you to my home, the one with the junkyard outside. I would challenge you....AGAIN to an arm wrestling contest. Get my arm broken....AGAIN & naturally, being the Angel of Mercy that she is, Medusa would gently, lovingly & compassionately tend to my wounds, which would be substantial. After which, I would.....AGAIN bow to your strength, then humbly salute you with a broken armed salute.

Subterfuge inspired by Fred G. Sanford & the G stands for GOT HER & A LITTLE CHIFAFA ON THE SIDE.....OHHHH YEAAAAAHHH!!!!!

Medusa,

Ouch Medusa! I'll put it like this. I haven't eaten all day long. You can be my cheftess anytime you want. Can I handle that???? Hell, do birdies fly??? Do new born babies cry??? Did Johnny Gill sing My, My, My??? In short, YES!!! By the way, I enjoy sweets....a lot. The question is can you handle being dessert?? Be careful what you ask for now. Candy is my middle name!!

All joking aside, you are a beautiful person inside as well as outwardly. There is nothing wrong with your physical looks. However, you are a most modest person, that's charming! You're a sweetheart!

Wicked,

Never count the kid out! I missed Medusas' meal message. I was thinking all pure thoughts & then my eye caught that. I had to edit my message, I didn't want our lovely one to think that I was ignoring us. As Sister Detroit said, we can be further tortured by Medusas' loveliness at the link that Sister has so lovingly provided.

You trhink that this is painful, wait till you see her standing next to those stars. We'll both be eating our hearts out. Mine eyes have seen the glory....and I was jealous too!!! Talk about envy!!! Oh cursed fate, why oh why am I not a Detroit resident???? I would jump in front of a speeding car, right in front of her hospital for the luv of my woman. Now tell me my brother, WOULD YOU DO THAT!!!!

Now Medusa......about that slap in the head.....

funkcity - Each of us have a little power over here on the New SD. I used my itty bitty power and deleted the post where I had placed the photo. So, ya'll can't blame Ralph on this one.

I decided that she as well as her photo had more class than which it was placed. So, check out the link. I guarantee, you will like it. Juice...if ya gotta ask, then you're NCAA (No Class At All)...kinda like a teacher during summer vacation !! (LOL) Now WRT the Beautiful One in the company of stars...no problem at all...because she shines more brightly than all of them. The photos are just further documentation of what I already know...Medusa is a DIAMOND. Ahhhh...and that smile...She could melt the largest iceberg or the coldest heart with the greatest of ease. So, would I jump in front of a speeding car ?? Yeah Bro....anything that YOU aren't driving (I'm not stupid !!)...and preferably a Corvair or an old Hyundai. I DO wanna enjoy the recovery process !

BTW Medusa...is your son still HERE ?? Planning on visiting LOS ANGELES soon ?? I'm sure both of us would LOVE TO have you HERE in LOS ANGELES for an EXTENDED visit. The weather is great...and it's been declared a JUICEFREE zone !!

..and all the Guys(Banned or not)look bone sucking oops, I mean finger lickin', ah forget it, you Guys just put the "G" in Good looking and "H" in Handsome.
