Thousands of artists have recorded at least one, and often several Northern Soul songs. It's not the artist's style of singing, or even his or her choice of material or that of their producers or managers. Northern Soul songs are determined by the song's beat (and danceability determines which beats are best). The best way to respond to your request would be to list some artists who have recorded a lot of songs that were popular on The Northern scene, or to list some artists who have had such rare, or formerly unknown songs that were also great dancers, that they became "classic Northern Soul hits".

Major Lance had several records played on the Northern scene. As most of his Okeh records were not really rare, Mint DJ copies were the desired pressings to have. When previously unreleased recordings like "Don't Fight It" was obtained by a DJ, it became a Northern hit.

I haven't had much to do with that scene since the late 1970s, but I'll make a random cross section list of some desired records from the '70s. Some were very rare, some not. Some were well-known artists, some not. Some were very fast stompers, some slightly fast mid tempos (all were considered danceable). Several of these songs I like a lot, some are okay, some I don't like:

Chancellor: Check out a related thread: A NON-Northern Soul Perspective. There are some good description of what Northern Soul is. There really is no such thing as a "Northern Soul Artist". The same artists sang Northern Soul and non-Northern Soul songs. It was the particular beat of a given song, and its facility for dancing that was the key element in determining whether or not a song was popular on the Northern Soul scene. The rarity or exclusivity of the record or tape recording was also a big factor. The soulfulness of the vocal was a factor, but many times not as critical. Even Margaret Whiting and some other old-time "White Bread" pop singers had recordings played by NS Djs.

As Robb K says there is no such thing as a Northern Soul artist, however 4 guys spring to mind for having a significant amount of releases played on the scene.

Major Lance
Edwin Starr
Gene Chandler
Jackie Lee

I think that the focus of how the term 'Northern Soul' came about would pretty much determine why that terminology is used to describe SOUL in a NORTHERN sense. There is such a thing as NORTHERN SOUL and N-S artist in a geographical sense and as well as what group of people made this type of soul and artist popular,(some poeple have to use this terminology to keep their careers alive, not getting the rightful respect they deserve) just as chitlin' ciruit music is considered 'southern-soul' ...most of those artist hail from the SOUTH...

I have hear the terminology 'west-coast soul' and 'east-coast soul' used over the years as well. Taking it at face value, the focus should be what the Chancellor's question is...can you name Northern Soul artists - why yes I can:

Tony Drake
The Limelights
Edwin Starr
The Invitations
The Notations
Roy Hamilton

more later...

PS - no arguement on what 'Blue Eyed Soul' is and how terrible some that music is?

There will be good artists, bad artists and in between artist in soul music, it is up to the discriminating ear and taste buds to know what they like.

Funny story.

A certain Philly person once associated with a well known "Northern" record(in name only)
played me a song he recorded that was called
"This is Northern Soul"
First of all, he had absolutely no clue whatsoever what the scene is about, and to write a song called This is Northern soul, is akin to someone writing a song called This is the blues, or this is r&b etc.
And to boot, the temps was at about 105 bpm!!!

And...the song ws dreadful and.........

Well, you get it, right??

Here is something quite interesting, KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) has been using Northern Soul classics in their latest TV commercial campaign in the UK.......These are some of the songs thay have used:

FRANK WILSON - DO I LOVE YOU
JACKIE WILSON - THE WHO WHO SONG
MARLENA SHAW - CALIFORNIA SOUL
LAURA GREENE - MOONLIGHT MUSIC AND YOU
LITTLE MILTON - MORE AND MORE
MAJESTICS - FUNKY CHICK
BOBBY GARRETT - I CAN'T GET AWAY
FLIRTATIONS - NOTHING BUT A HEARTACHE

YOU CAN GO TO THE LINK BELOW AND SEE THE ACTUAL COMMERCIALS!!!
Just scroll down a bit (fourth of fifth ad) to the KFC ads and click on the still picture from the video in the right-hand column..... You will be asked to pick which "player" (Quick-time, Windows Media or RealPlayer) you wish to use.

Here is the link:

The Jackie Wilson, Marlena Shaw, Little Milton, Laura Greene, Flirtataions commercials do work, the Frank Wilson doesn't (DARN!)

Isn't that SOMETHING!!! A record that Berry Gordy pulled back, because he wanted Frank Wilson to devote full time to producing, rather than singing and making appearances, is now heard by millions in UK, most of whom are not likely to be soul fans!!!

Just to clarify, and hopefully not confuse further, the following three tracks are not NSoul spins:
MARLENA SHAW - CALIFORNIA SOUL
LITTLE MILTON - MORE AND MORE
MAJESTICS - FUNKY CHICK

...they did however recieve attention from the 'Rare Groove' scene that existed (mainly a South of England thang!) during the early/mid 9T's, and to some smaller degree exists today...oh, and the Majestics track was/is an indemand tune on the 'Deep Funk' scene, which, like Northern Soul, is a global scene nowadays.

Do try to pay attention at the back... ;-)
