As a 50 yr. Washington native I am amazed at how many dc area stars had to go elsewhere to make italso how many Groups that were successful and yet very few people know they are from DC. I'm trying to compile a list of DC artist group or solo SDS'ers can you help? |

I don't know exactly... Osiris Marsh still ives in DC, I had his address and was about to make the connection for an interview and I lost my address book and I haven't been able to find out who had given me his contact, so I am still waiting on some bit of luck to find another lead... LOL There's a great page on Osiris Marsh here : http://hem.bredband.net/funkyf lyy/osiris/index.html And yes he was with the Stridells and also with Destiny and THE FAMILY a band that had an album out in 1977 on the Little City label (great funk LP by the way) just before Osiris the band got together. I was going by the info regarding The Shrine Record label. Regarding The Counts, there were several different groups that regarded under that name. The group that I'm referring to recorded for The Shrine label. The Cavaliers & The Cautions recorded for The Shrine label as well. I thought that The Epsilons were a Philly group, however, the info here ID's them as being from Washington. Here's a link to the info: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&no de=&contentId=A35258-2003May9& notFound=true Jocelyn Brown spent her pre-teen years in Kinston, N.C. After going to Brooklyn, she built up a following at her Uncles church in Washington, D.C. From there, it was off to New York.

The Diplomats Harmon Bethea & The Cap-Tans The Clovers were originally from D.C. The Marquees (Billy Stewart was in this group) Ray Pollard The Wanderers(Pollard's group) Linda & Vistas Cairos Bobby Reed (possibly Baltimore) Prophets Fawns There was a thread on DC groups on the Old SD Forum. It had a lot more listed than this thread so far. You should look it up in the Archives. (Message edited by Robb_K on May 22, 2004) |

Wonder B, You're right, Leroy Emmanuel's group (aka the Fabulous Counts) were Detroiters but there were a few different groups called the Counts. Davie |

Peaches and Herb were from DC. Another one is The Four Bars aka Eddie Daye and the Four Bars. Their first lead singer was Alphonso Feemster who, I'd guess, is related to Herb Fame (Herb Feemster) of Peaches and Herb. I'm sure there's many more that I can't think of offhand - Harmon Bethea AKA Maskman and The Agents, Van McCoy ... Davie |

Davie Gordon listed a Peaches and Herb. Yes, both Francine "Peaches" Barker and Herb Fame were from D.C. That's why Van McCoy knew who they were, and thought they might do well together. As a lot of the other artists Van McCoy worked directly with were also from D.C. (D.C. Playboys, Diplomats, Presidents, etc.), I wonder if Chris Bartley, Cheryl Williams, Art Robins, Kendra Spotswood, Jeanne Screen, Sylvia Shemwell, Sandi Sheldon and Toni Lamarr were from D.C. too? |

Robb, I have read that Chris Bartley was from Harlem, N.Y. I would love to hear more of his songs as The Sweetest Thing & Out Of My Mind were great songs. |

Juice: Everything I heard that Bartley sang was great. At least, all those written by Van McCoy. I've only heard a few others. He had a lot of output on McCoy's Vando label-both when it was distributed by Cameo-Parkway, and later, by Bell. One thing about his Van McCoy productions. Even as a big fan of them, I wouldn't want to listen to a lot of them in a row, as most of them sound a lot the same. Like Jimmy Reed, he only had two different songs (a fast one, and a slower one). If you listened to all his songs, consecutively, and then listened to all of Van McCoy's own self-produced sides (he sounded exactly like Chris), you'd go insane. But I'm glad I've got all Bartley's Van McCoy produced and written cuts. Their top quality. His Vando album is fantastic. Every cut is great (all written by Van): The Sweetest Thing This Side of Heaven Sugar Baby You Get Next To My Heart For You My Baby Thanks For Loving Me Gotta Tell Somebody (About My Baby) Sittin' Pretty Baby It's Wonderful That's How Much I Love You Hooked On You I'll Be Loving You Most of those were also on 45s. Also on 45: Love Me Baby Truer Words Were Never Spoken The Feeling You Give Me I Found A Goodie Be Mine Forever He also had a few releases on Musicor. I don't like most of those cuts (not written by Van McCoy). I believe "Out Of My Mind" was an unreleased recording from his Musicor sessions. Hasn't there been a Chris Bartley CD released?

I've seen The Sweetest Thing LP on Collectables. I stayed away from it, because Collectables liner notes from that time were lacking in info & the sound was lightweight. They seem to have improved over the past few years. I believe that it can still be purchased. ?I think that I'll finally break down & get it. When I went to J&Rs to get it, it was out of stock. I wish that they'd do a comprehensive CD with all of his music. |

Dynamic Corvettes According to the homepage of their former guitarist they were a D.C. band. I'm still trying to find out more about this group, but information seems to be very limited. I e-mailed Mike Stern ( http://www.mikesternguitar.com /bio.htm ) with some questions but he has not replied yet. |

Robb, Kendra Spotswood IS Sandi Sheldon. Spotswood is her real name, Sheldon is a stage name. Cheryl Williams is, I think, from Philadelphia Sylvia Shemwell was a New Yorker - she was later a member of the Sweet Inspirations. Davie |

If I remember rightly the Dynamic Corvettes' singles were on A-Bet, a subsidiary of the Nashville-based Excello group of labels. They probably had some tie-in with Skip Mahoney and the Casuals - same management ? On the subject of Skip M. I was playing their "Janice" a few days ago - what a great record ! Davie |
