I dont know if this thread has been created before, but I am gonna throw this up here... Over the years of reading album covers of various performers, the credits, the players I have always noticed the major entity on a recording: THE PRODUCER. I have always been interested in that role in the recording process...how they operate, how they motivate things in the studio, and eventually make it all happen. I am not going to be able to name all of them but I would like to acknowledge some of the major players in the business of music who have definetly graced my turntable over the years... (The producer and the notable body of work) Quincy Jones - Walking In Space/Body Heat/The Dude/Juke Joint/Greatest Hits Arif Mardin - anything with Chaka Khan/Rufus Narada Michael Walden - his work with Aretha Franklin Rod Temperton - All Heatwave productions and Michael Jackson Stevie Wonder - everything... Who's yours SDF? I know I will agree... Peace, DyvaNaye

Hey, Teacher DyvaNaye! (smile!) I have make my work correctly (producer / artists). John Richbourg produced Joe Simon and many other southern soul luminaires as Sam baker, Bobby Hebb, Ann sexton, Roscoe Robinson, Ella Washington,... I have read a critic that says he was (is died) the "creator" of Country-Soul. Peace & Soul Food |

I am so pleased to see that my idol gets a mention...the late and great HANK COSBY. Hank is represented by THREE of his productions on the SITSOM deluxe....I was Made To Love Her, For Once In My Life and Home Cookin' Edgar...Hank also recorded the Velvelettes on I'm In Love (And I Know It). That for me is the ultimate pairing.

I was sitting down thinking about albums that I considered to be really definitive, and it came to my mind that the "Waiting To Exhale" album was one of the best I had heard in recent years. I then thought of this thread on Producers, and wondered why no one had listed Babyface ? In 1995 Babyface produced in an unforgetable soundtrack. He not only produced all 16 songs on this dynamite album, he also co-wrote 15 out of the 16 songs. Exhale(Shoop Shoop) - Whitney Houston Why Does It Hurt So Bad - Whitney Houston It Hurts Like Hell - Aretha Franklin All Night Long - SWV Let It Flow - Toni Braxton Sittin In My Room - Brandy This Is How It Works - TLC Wey U - Chante Moore My Love, Sweet Love - Patti LaBelle Kissing You - Faith Evans Not Gon' Cry - Mary J. Blige My Funny Valentine* - Chaka Khan Love Will Be Waiting At Home - For Real How Could You Call Her Baby - Shanna Count On Me - Whitney Houston & CeCe Winans *(only song not written or co-written by Babyface) Babyface deserves to be in our list of Producers, so this is for you Babyface, with many thanks! |

Hi everyone, John R. has been discussed at least once before on this honourable forum. I hope it's possible to access the old posts through this link: http://soulfuldetroit.com/foru m/messages/3190/2431.html?1046 852609 I also found a fine tribute to the man online. Being a die-hard country soul fan, I rank him as one of my fave producers/record company men: http://rockradioscrapbook.trip od.com/johnr1.html Eva |

Eva, thanks for the links, we must have many records in common, in our collections ! Sea, you must know Barry Beckett, he played piano and organ on a lot of records. In 1967, he replaced Spooner Oldham in the Fame rhythm section (Jimmy Johnson/gtr, David Hood/bs, Roger Hawkins/dms), doing sessions produced by Rick Hall. In 1969, the same section formed their own studio, Muscle shoals Sounds, where Atlantic and Chess sent their stars recording, like Etta James "Tell Mama". I know that Barry Beckett produced the first Eddie Hinton LP "Very Extremely Dangerous", and I think he did more. |
