One of the fun things you can do in Detroit is travel south and visit Canada, while you are here. The detroit are has a lot of interesting things to see and do. One of the things that Detroit brought to the world beside Music was Automobiles. The auto museums and the tour of the Rouge plant (where they make them) are really something to see. Even if you are not into cars that much you will not see any thing like in the world.

Hi Ady Aren't you the lucky one! You will have an excellent time in America's most interesting city. You've picked nice premises too. Make sure you visit the Fisher Theater next door. Apparently all ZTSC numbers were issued from offices there in the sixties. The decor is out of this world. There is also a theater inside which used to house concerts. eg the Supremes etc. When you head to Hitsville (10 mins walk I think) drop in at McDonalds and see some nice (and unusual) Motown pics on the walls. Close to your hotel, on the east side, you can walk to the D Town building in less than 5 minutes. Across the street (west side) from there is the old Latin Quarter night club which was a major venue for decades. United Sound is not far from your hotel either, but take your car. Go down Woodward and take a right for 2 blocks at Antoinette. For a bar with a great juke box go to Honest?John's at 488 Selden (close to Woodward). Tell John/Bridget/Carnie that David from Scotland sent you. Spyder Turner is on at the MotorCityCasino on 17th-19th June. Do not miss that. Again, tell him about SoulfulDetroit. Check out Baker's Keyboard Lounge on Livernois and see who's on there. Apart from that, you'll have a busy time visiting some of the locations on this web site. Take lots of film with you as you will have hours of pleasure looking back at your photographs (very important point). Make sure you diagram your trip on a map to ensure maximum coverage as this will be the quickest week of your life. You'll have a ball. Enjoy David (Message edited by david meikle on May 20, 2004) (Message edited by david meikle on May 20, 2004) |

Soul daddy, when your here, call the three different casinos and find out what entertainment they have in the lounges. You'll see some of the local bands from blues to jazz. You can't go wrong by visiting Greek town,a two or three block area of Monroe street, very good greek food plus a lot of people roaming the streets, plus the Greektown casino is there with entertainment, also Fishbones resturant another cool place in greektown. I gotta go,I need a shot of ouzo,a glass of retsina wine and and some souvlaki. Lynn--OOOPAA!!! |

Don't forget Windsor right across the border. A quick trip through customs, another wonderful casino without having to pay taxes on winnings. Great restaurants to boot. (Sorry had to make a shout out as Detroit wouldn't be Detroit without Windsor, and Windsor wouldn't be Windsor without Detroit.) |

It's beautiful down at the river. Ady the ZTSC premises could also be at 2990 WGB which is right across from the Fisher.

The Fireworks will be going on June 23rd at Belle Isle Park The Henry Ford Museum (Greenfield Village) I believe there's a great Motown exibit there. The Motown Museum Hart Plaza Festivals on Jefferson at Woodward Greektown is full of Entertainment on Monroe St. Again, the 3 Casinos'(Greektown, MGM, MotorCity) Have you ever tasted 'FAYGO' pop?, it;s a soft drink, that's made in just about every flavor you can think of...and it's very good. |

Ady, Tenny Street Roadhouse in Dearborn (5 miles west of Downtown, always has a great calendar of American roots music. Unlike the Casinos, the focus is on good food and great music. Here is their June calendar: http://www.tennystreet.com/cal en/june04.html Leo B |

The Casino's are still places of entertainment, that's why all the surburbanites visit them in DETROIT so often...right? Ady requested info about Detroit/Motown in the first place. I didn't tell Ady to visit, I was just suggesting places that were in "DETROIT"...if the request was about Dearborn, then I couldn't respond to that could I ? The request was about DETROIT and so I responded. |

Some off-beat thoughts. I don't know if you can go inside the FOX theater for a quick look/see but there is so much history in there. It's like the Apollo theater in Harlem USA. Also, you might want to take a drive down Woodward Ave. On Chicago and Boston Blvds. there are beautiful homes with so much history. On this website, you can learn about the beautiful architecture in Detroit proper. BTW, I agree with David's recommendation, Baker's Keyboard. I used to go there in the 60's to catch Earl Van Dyke. Even Red Foxx played Bakers. Again, so much history. If you like corndbeef sandwiches there is a great deli on Wyoming and Pickford. Don't remember the name but those are the best cornedbeef sandwiches I've ever tasted in the USA. If you're interested, I'll get the name/phone number. If you phone in your order, it will be ready in a jiff. Down the way you'll notice a "Blue" school. That's Mumford Highschool. A little fashion trivia about Mumford. Eddie Murphy wore the Mumford Highschool (basketball) T-Shirt all through the motion picture Beverly Hills Cop, the original. Everyone in my family that was spread all over the country had my Mom running in Mumford buying 10 shirts every visit. It was a fashion craze and earned a lot of money for Mumford! They still sell them. Finally, there is Belle Isle park. I haven't been there in over a decade so I'm not sure what displays are there. But there is a BEAUTIFUL Fountain right in the middle of the park. It used to light up at night and change colors. The architecture of the fountain is just as beautiful as any famous building you would see in ancient Egypt. Enjoy your trip! Arcadia |

The Gaelic league/Irish-American club is located in the same area that David mentioned on Michigan ave.Maybe a mile or less from the center of Detroit(woodward ave.).The number there is313-964-8700 or 313-963-8895.Call and see if they have something set up for the games. The club is very pro Irish but not in a hostile way. My family imigrated from Scotland but I'm a member.(Hey,we're all just one big Celtic family) I joined because it's a safe place to sit and have a few Guiness stouts in a pub-like place without being hasseled by ass-holes. Also by being a member I get in for free to the kick-ass St.Patricks day party..THAT'S the Scottish part of me.--Ye'll nay be takin me money if ah kin find a way ta get in for free, laddie.LOL The Bruce |
