American Idol is coming on tonight at 8:00pm EST, to show profiles of the remaining three.

That is the same time M45 comes on. I can't wait to see how many viewers were tuned into M45 as opposed to AI.

No matter what, the critics say if you want to hear real singing, turn into Motown 45.

Well it was on last nite in Canada; it starts with the Supremes and they are pretty weak; you can't hear Cindy when she sings and as nice as she may be, she didn't sing well; Mary was better but fairly husky in voice etc; Kelly was obviously afraid........she stumbled during Endless Love even. The Four Tops were really good; the new lead singer is awesome; The Temptations were surprisingly wobbly; My Girl was ok; the others were not strongly sung. There were too many new singers doing weak versions of songs; Gerald Levert did a safe version of Do You Love Me, lacking all excitement; Kelly Locke and Cedric sang It Takes Two and that was worse; Martha and the Vandellas got cut out totally and there was no Boyz II Men. Still it was entertaining; but they needed Diana and Stevie and Michael big time.

I too saw Motown 45 last night and was not blown away by any means. The energy just wasn't there.
I won't go into detail and let you judge for yourself.

I agree with JRob and Funkyone. This show is weak! My goodness! The best performance I've seen so far is Gladys Knight. Gladys can still BLOW! Her voice hasn't changed at all. She still looks good too! The Four Tops were good although it wasn't the same without Levi Stubbs on lead. I was quite disappointed with the Supremes. They looked good but they didn't sound very good. I don't know, I'm just not feeling this show. Just my opinion...

HEY VONNIE!!!! What's that you say???? I'm having trouble seeing your post! Could it be the delayed effect of the kabonging??? Girl you hit me like Tarver hit Jones on a Saturday night :-)

I saw Gladys & her Pips & she as always is great. Gladys should be crowned the reigning Queen of Motown. Honey's still got skills & is still earthy. Gladys always made me proud of my Black women!

Yes Gladys the queen tho I dint think she connected as much emotionally tho she sounded sensational;I thought CIndy did quite good for her first time singing lead ever and in front of a national audience--I think her mic was weak at times; I thought Kelly was fine overall and even had a Diana-esque quality; Mary good on Stop tho poor on You Cant Hurry Love-just didnt suit her voice(and Ive heard her sing it better)-she should have gotten a slow solo to showcase her wonderful bluesy voice;I thought they were at their best singing You KeeP Me Hangin on in unison! What ahappened to Miss Martha??

Did Kelly mess up the first verse of "You Keep Me Hanging On" during the opening? Tsk tsk ...

I was at Motown 25 and it was all that. But tonight was okay. Of course, I enjoyed the super talented Ricky Minor band, complete with my fav Cindy Mizelle! Ricky used to be (perhaps still is) Whitney's musical director. He and his band are on just about every music show on TV - Grammy's, Divas Live, Motown 45, etc. They rock!

Wow! It may have taken 21 years (since "Motown 25"), but the Supremes were finally able to do a medley of their hits for a national audience and they were terrific! Mary looked great (I loved the way Cedric introduced her) , Cindy still has it and Kelly was a Supreme surprise she was very good.

I am a very, very happy fan right at this moment that our girls proved once again why they are the undisputed greatest female group of all time. They looked and sounded great. I was surprised at how high up the stage was from the audience, but put a mic in Mary Wilson's hand and she just works the stage.

The rest of the performers were great, although Theo Peoples forgot some of the words to "Reach Out I'll Be There," I was very pleased at the quality of show ABC presented tonight. Jermaine Jackson sounded good and looked much younger than his age. The Funk Bros. were cooking and Thelma Houston? Fagettaboutitt!!! Gladys Knight was tremendous, Smokey was, well Smokey and the young lady from "American Idol" is already a star in my opinion. Great show, great new memories were made tonight!

I'm with Vonnie on this one. Gladys owned the stage. I watched the Smokey and Joss Stone duet and was thinking that Joss, while a bit more histrionic than I normally like, gave the best performance of the night. Gladys then came out and proceeded to set things straight. :-)

Regards,
Ken

Say gang, I have posted on this under another thread. I agree that Mrs. Knight was the bomb but the show was put together backasswards. The talent they had availible was wasted. I wasn't feeling Ms. Stone and Smokey....in fact I wasn't feeling any of this show in a significant way. There were really no defining moments for this special, Michael Jackson, Tempts and Tops from Motown 25......???? I really dont have a good reason to keep the tape. Where was Jean Terrell or Ms. Payne ....ahhhh forget about it...!!!!!

I taped AMERICAN IDOL last night because I didn't want to miss MOTWON 45. But in truth, that AMERICAN IDOL tape will probably get more play in my vcr than the Motown special will.

I don't think MOTOWN 45 was bad. Its just that there was no real moment, as Kdubya posted. No Supremes reunion. No BILLIE JEAN. No Tempts/Tops battle. Everyone involved did okay, and Gladys was great. But I have seen all of them (even Gladys) do much better.

On my list of Motown specials,MOTOWN 45 definitely comes in last.

Honestly, I taped Motown 45 & watched A.I. I picked up Motown 45 when A.I. went off. I can't wait to see the ratings! Truthfully, both shows sucked. Lstening to the 3 girls made me long of those days of Justin Guarini & William Hung. A.I. last night was like some damn talk show & the "PERFORMANCES"....... Please tell me, how in the hell can a person be deemed a singer when:
1) They can't hold a note
2) They can't stay in key
3) They sing flat

The best performance was by Fantasia & hers was so-so. If this is a reflection of the best of the best, someone's in big trouble. If Fantasia doesn't win, something's wrong. The other performances were sorely lacking.

Tonight I'll be watching UPN/9 @ 9 PM. They have an A.I. type of show called WB Superstars USA. Looking at the commercials, it appears as though it will be infinitely more entertaining!

Jimmy Mack,

Now we know that AI contestants received 65 million votes for the final show, I don't know what that translates into as the amount of viewership.

I can tell you that the final AI telecast was over the top with production and excitement. According to my own personal observations and those of others and the postings on SDF, AI's final show excelled compared to M45. M45 did not have me on my feet clapping and shouting, versus AI which was truly exciting:-).

Hey Vonnie!!

I still wonder about those ratings, did anyone see the Ratings?? I missed them when they came out. I just wonder how both shows did, although I would guess that A.I. won the timeslot.
