Through music samples, parents and grandparents, our kids know about many classic R+B/Soul songs because they hear them at home. Young ones know many classic songs from the 50s/60s/70s era but know them only through when Mom plays them during a Saturday morning cleaning, Saturday night relaxation...it always seems to be weekend when old tunes are heard. Radio stations no longer play old songs (the Chi-Lites, Manhattans, Delfonics, Dells, etc.) so how do we get young ones to respect older music when it is no longer played? I am a teacher and one way I can get kids to recognize older artists is to play "Stay in My Corner" by the Dells and have kids try to hold the note as long as Marvin. We have been BLESSED by having the opportunity to meet and talk with those who have "paved the way" for today's artists. I would like to have you SoulfulDetroiters tell me what you think would help have today's students want to know about their musical heritage. My e-mail is TSkinner0623@Rogers.Com All the Best! Tim |

"Radio stations no longer play old songs"? Not true! Not in America it's not true. Tim, I don't know what country U live in but in America there are endless radio stations that play classic (not "old") rock and/or soul songs 24 hours per day. Right now I have on WCBS 101.1. Rarely does 15 minutes pass that tghey don't play a Motown song. The radio station I was listening to earlier played MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS' "Honey Chile". I then called M.R. in Detroit to let her know. We spoke for an hour! We have television stations that play the classic Motown and other songs -- including everyone U mentioned -- around the clock. Besides playing the song on these cable t.v. stations, they print biographical info of the artist on the screen. If U want an even better response and interest from the kids, don't, whatever U do, don't refer to the songs as "old".

Hi Saltipe. I'm 16 and from the UK I DJ week in week out on the rare soul music scene in the UK. I've been interested in 60's, 70's 80's soul/motown etc since I was nine. Check out my website http://www.seanlivesey.com It is possible to get the so called younger generation into "older" music. Because at the end of the day this is what music is all about. |

While I was in NYC attending my niece's graduation from NYU (you go, gurl!), I decided to go to Ashford and Simpson's Sugar Bar (previous post). There was a group of young people (early to mid 20s) at my niece's apartment. I told them this club had an open mic night and it was owned by ASHFORD AND SIMPSON. The "kids" all looked at me with the blankest of looks. Then one of them said "ohhhhhhhh I know who they are - they were on American Idol!" When we arrived, Nick himself tried to find us a table but it was too crowded. When we got home, my niece told everybody she just met the guy from American Idol. To her credit, however, she did recognize "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" even with me singing it. I listened to her music choices alot. I don't like it, but my parents didn't like mine and I HATED when they said that. I'm just grateful my niece and nephew don't get into any mosh pits. LOL |

I think if more young folks were aware of the still staying power of our music...by knowing and learning the importance of the way makers of music of our era, compare some of the voices and styles of todays music to that same era... hearing about it, listening to it and most of all, letting them know that some of the music they now hear is a spin off of "OUR" music. ...As my Daughter didn't know that song that Jaheim recorded "Put That Woman First" was a spin off of William Bells' "I Forgot To Be Your Lover...and lest we forget how the Rappers sample a lot of 60's and 70's music. I like telling young folks about (for example)the 60's Music sound, and of course Motown, the artists, and the Motown Revues. I've taken many to visit the museum, and they know I get excited all over again...plus, I purchased a book from the Museum that tells the history and still play it at home around my Grandson and his friends. Since it is a form of art, I believe Music should be a part of the educational system. |

By the way, Medusa, speaking of "The Young Folks", who's version of that song do U prefer: DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES (1969) or MICHAEL JAX & THE JACKSONS (1970)? P.S. - Less than 30 hours to M-45! |

Hey I'm from Chicago too, not that it means very much, but the young folks here already love our music. Many of you have pointed out the various samples and lifting of hooks from classic soul music. Some I like some I don't. Funny thing most of the new artists that have some semblance of talent (Jaheim) I can get into it..... others who have little or no talent whatsoever( fill in the blank) I find it offensive. It is up to us to teach young folk to respect where the music came from and have appreciation for real voices and real musicians. I posted elsewhere about two Bands The Time & Switch who were just that self contained bands, like Brass Construction, Ohio Players,Mandrill, Maze, etc. whatever their individual style was it didn't jump out of a computer or drum machine and more importantly it was an original compositon from the heart, mind and body of a living, breathing person. Today most young folk fork out big cash for concert tickets where the "Stars" are singing to tracks, I bet the Dells, Temptations and Manhattans are laughing their butts off at these new wave acts who could'nt sing a note if I wrote them one. Hell at least with Kareoke you got to have a voice..............ok that was my one raving rant for this day....maybe I'll have more tommorrow............. Big up to (Don), I forgot the radio station in Chicago thats making a lot of noise can be found on 106.3 on the FM radio dial. Their format is strictly Classic Soul. Limited commercials and quite frankly the closest thing to satellite radio in the Windy City. Great Station....... (Message edited by Paladin on May 24, 2004) |
