Have there been any? Valerie doesnt count as she produced with Nick--ok maybe we should include partners. Off the top of my head Im thinking Roberta Flack(Feel Like Makin Love)-tho I could be wrong. Any others? I hope Im forgetting some. Im guessing Angela Winbush on the R and B charts tho Im wondering about Hot 100 so to speak. |

Eli, Florence Greenberg is White! She indeed was a producer, and the owner of Scepter Records, and launched the careers of many Black performers, including The Shirelles, Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown, and the delightful Dionne Warwick. She was indeed a trailblazer as a female entrepreuner and music mogul. Supposedley, Bette Midler was supposed to star in a movie based on Florence's life story, but it hasn't come to be... |

Yes Bless You, I am aware that she was white, and Jewish. I had the pleasure of meeting her several times back in the day. She reminded me of my aunt Pearl! |

OMG, I have a Jewish great aunt named Pearl too, my Grandma's sister! What a small world! She is so funny, though I haven't seen her in years. I figured it would be easy for someone to think Florence was a sistah if they hadn't actually seen her, since most of her label's roster was black. I love the Scepter Box Set! Peace. |

Hi Bless You, You'd be amazed at the amount of "white" folks who have produced, written, arranged, played on, engineered, etc some of the biggest "Black" records of all time, myself included. The color of a persons skin should have no bearing upon the creation of any genre of music, as the feeling lives deep in the heart and it dwells deep within and not on the surface. There have been one too many discussions on this forum about "white this or black that" and the relevence thereof regarding the creation of "Black music". Its all about "keeping it real" and keeping it sincere and from the heart.

Cynthia Biggs was mentioned earlier. There isn't a song she's written/produced that I don't love. She is super talented. "Nights Over Egypt" makes my car stereo go as loud as it can ... my bad in the neighborhood. |

Hello all! hello, Linda Di, The first tune I heard co-writen by Cynthia Biggs was in my teens, MFSB's "Love Has No Time Or Place" (co-write with Bruce Hawes). I likes the chorus of this tune. The name of Cynthia was from this time on more and more frequent in the PIR and Philly outside productions. Of course, have many other songs by Cynthia I likes a lot (by Jerry Butler, Jones Girls, Lou Rawls,...). I suggest to you if you have the chance, to heard the Masters At Work remix of the Incognito's "Nights Over Egypt" cover (with Maysa Leak and Jocelyn Brown in the chorus!) I visited recently the Cynthia Biggs web-site. Includes a exhaustive list of his songs writen or co-writen. Today keep on to be a very active woman! I read many time ago a feminist article where speaks about the autonomy by diverse female singers as Ann Pebbles (perhaps refered that she auto-produced her music, ?). Also i think Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading self produced their music. Peace & Soul Food |

Valerie counts triple in my book! She was among the upper tier of Motown producers when it came to hands-on production skill and that top tier has been unequalled elsewhere in my experience. |

Eli, I totally agree with you! I wasn't labeling any music by color - I just meant that the title of the thread said 'African- American', and Florence Greenberg is not. So we are in total agreement on the quality being all that's important. I wasn't attempting to be divisive - why would you think that? I just thought that honestly maybe someone didn't know who she was, and I was simply seeking to clarify. The Scepter Box Set rules! Bless You |

Linda Perry, who used to be in "4-Non Blondes", produces a lot of material. She wrote (but didn't produce) Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful", and was nominated for Song of the Year at the most recent Grammys. She produced most of Pink's last album. BTW...this is my first post. I found this site while surfing at work a few weeks ago. It is OFF THE HOOK!! Thanks. |

How can we forget Angela Winbush. One of the most underated is Twinkie Clark of The Clark Sisters. She was writer and producer of most of their music, music that has since been either re-recorded or sampled by Aaliyah, Mary J. Blige, Al Green, Shirley Murdock, Dave Hollister, Missy Elliot & Xscape, to name a few. Don't sleep on this gospel legend. |

Yes, Roger, Millie is a great producer, and with a little help from Brad Shapiro, she must have learned a lot ! And while we're in the South, one of my favorite is Bettye Crutcher, who wrote many soul anthems, like "Who's makin' love". With Jeff Stewart, she produced the fantastic Shirley Brown LP on Arista. Memphis at his best ! |
