You know, " Love Is The Message (Club mix)", had a rich history here in all of the popular clubs here in NY. That was in 1981. But 7 years before that in 1974, a masterpiece LP of the same title was released. Celebrating 30 years, Love Is The Message, sounds just as great as ever !! Kudos to Bobby Eli and the MFSB crew for making such a wonderful album !!!! Happy anniversary to Love Is The Message !!! I'm praying for a CD reissue. Hey, Mr. Chancellor of Soul! Thanks for describe this album so great as really is. Have some albums like this that got a very sentimental value for me. The title track, of course, and the morew played instrumental of mine, "Bitter Sweet" or "My One And Only Love", responsible of my taste for the jazz and fussion styles. Congratulations to Bobby Eli as a part of this historical "anthem" and all The Family (Mothers, Fathers, Sisters and Brothers). The test of the time is superate with excellent qualification and probably in the XXX Century, people will keep on heard it! Love (and peace & soul food) Keep On To Be The Message |

I love the LP. There was always one thing that I never understood about the title cut. Why was Love Is The Message faded out at the break???? I could never figure that out! Thank God for the Philly Classics remix! That break put a lot of bread in DJs mouths, believe that. That remix is truly a classic & its sales is nowhere reflective of its massive popularity. That jammy has packed floors for almost 30 years now. What musicianship!!!! |

I was very lucky to find MFSB/Love Is The Message as a japanese import CD a few years ago. I still have my original vinyl pressing, plus the quadraphonic pressing that also came out in the 1970s. |

Hello again, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters & Brothers! I'm totally agree with that you says about "My One & Only Love", Mr. Chancellor. I have heard many other covers and got one by Chick Corea and no one like the MFSB cover. Also, the intro of "Cheaper To keep Her" and the last part with the vibraphone solo...! In 1981, the first year of existence of Catalonian TV (TV 3), there was a Gastronomic program by Pere Tpies with the "Zack's Fanfare" as the sintony! I firsty discovered "Love Is The message" in the spanish PIR-CBS album "El Sonido de Filadelfia, Volumen 2" where appears the version much more short with the voices by The Three Degrees. Of course, some time after, when I acquired the MFSB album and heard the extended instrumental only version, i preferred instantly this other (the original??). Also Dany Krivit in his linner notes of his "Grass Roots" 2 x CD says that the first "House" record was this track. Really, the music by MFSB can be consider as precursor of many things, simply seminal. Peace & Soul Food |

Dang!! Thirty years!! Where did the time go? I can still remember the nuances of that session as if it were yesterday! The way you hear it on that 12 inch, was done with a series of edits and extended sections and breaks. The track itself was recorded for about just over six minutes or so. When I attended the horn and string sessions I was floored...literally. |

According to Tom Moulton. when he remixed the track, "Love Is The Message" for the "Philadelphia Classics" compilation in 1977, he had Leon Huff lay down a new Fender Rhodes solo and spliced it onto the already existing solo. |

Universal Love album too! Lovely stuff... Talking of which - what about this; http://promo.mudhut.co.uk/Azul i/ChoiceFlyerwin.htm The track called 'It's good for the soul/Salsoul Orchesrtra'. Nice guitar from about 50" in and nice key changes 2' 37" in. Was that both you and Norman, Bobby? The scratchin' style and the octaves? |

Thanks Bobby E & DVD for the info. I'll tell you, that remix was a work of art. It made The Message an eternal classic. It is the Godfather of all remixes!!! |

Hello again, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters & Brothers! Hey, Carl Dixon! Other albums by MFSB deserves the qualificative of "CLASSICS". Of course, as you says "Universal Love", especially "TLC" and "My Mood" (i only dislike "Let's Go Disco"). And the cover art, on of my faves, roses in the sea. And the interior photo with the clouds writing "I Love You"... And another great album, "Philadelphia freedom" with the jazzy "Ferry Avenue" and "Tears In The Morning",... Precious Big Band sound that, sadly is considerate economically not viable today! Peace! |

Ola! Manny I agree - Let's go Disco and 'Northern Dancer/Biddu Orchestra' should be deleted. Never did like the word disco in songs, for some reason. Maybe I am wrong, but it cheapens them. There again, Disco Inferno and Disco Connection I like. My mood - love it. That album is still ahead of its time. I had a holiday in Lorette de Mar. I bought Oro Blanco/Barry White and my mate bought the Universal Love. |

Carl, on the song you mention, the octaves were played by Norman, I played the rhythm and he and I traded lead lines. BTW.. I too LOATHE the word disco, especially in a song title, Disco Inferno, not withstanding. Most of that stuff sounds corny to me today. |

Hi, Don and Mr. Electronic! I also dislike the word "disco". I blame it in the ignorant people who in the 70's says "I heard progressive rock. Subsequently, of course, i hate soul music". These persons have a distorsioned vision of soul as Boney M = Temptations = ... For those people, except jazz, all the blck music after 1969, "is disco music"(??!!). Casually the only tunes i hate especially by Four Tops is "Disco Daddy" and the most I hate by Archie Bell & Drells is the same by MFSB, "Let's Go Disco". Also have some titles i likes a lot despite the fact that includes the word "Disco" as "Trammps Disco Theme" (that remember me "Black Is Black" by Los Bravos!) and also "Disco Connection" by Isaac Hayes (I think is the same that Don is refered, ?). Peace & Soul Food |

Hello again, soulful brothers & sisters! Hello, Carl! I'm glad because have many people from Europe (more than I think!). This made also SD more cosmopolitan. Is a pleasure to tell the days of the week (in my two official idioms): Monday = lunes (spanish) = dilluns (catalonian) Tuesday = martes (spanish) = dimarts (catalonian) Wednesday = mircoles (spanish) = dimecres (catalonian) Thursday = jueves (spanish) = dijous (catalonian) Friday = viernes (spanish) = divendres (catalonian) Saturday = sbado (spanish) = dissabte (catalonian) Sunday = domingo (spanish) = diumenge (catalonian) BTW, here in SD, as i have says another time, we all speaks a kind of "Esperanto" idiom: our love for soul music. Best Regards, friend. Peace & Soul Food. |

Mike: Classics such as those belong in the EERGGH thread for sure!!! I always wondered how such a soulful woman like Estelle Axton, got involved with Radio DJ Rick Dees & miraculously got a Gold Record out of Da Duck. Who'da thunk it?? (Message edited by Juicefree20 on May 18, 2004) |

Manny - thanks for the Spanish lesson! I need it. When I come over to Spain you can educate me about the wonderful Rioja and Navarra wines you have out there. The ones fermented in the American oak casks will do just fine thank you. I will settle for nothing else. |

Hello again, soulful folks! Hi, Carl! When you come in Spain, notice me! here, very close to my town have the wines most internationally apreciated: THE PRIORAT. Also, in my particular taste, the best black wine I ever drink is the SOMONTANO (from Huesca, Aragon). I also think England have many things envoyables as the traditional love for Soul Music, the especialized stores, and also, a personal obsession of mine, the natural illustrators (Terence Lambert, especialized in birds is my hero in this field!) For who thinks this not got relation with this trhead: Can imagine someting better than a afternoon with a beatiful woman, good (Somontano) wine and "MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE" by MFSB sounding in the turntable...? Peace! |
