Robert Winters grew up in Detroit living in the Fort-Viser streets area, I was working at a small studio when I met Robert in 1966, I released 2 records on him in 1968 and 69, we could never get anything going for him, and that was too bad because he was a great singer....Robert had polio as a kid and could not walk but that never stopped him at all..Robert moved to California and finally got a major label interested, he was pretty old when "Magic Man" took off, and I know he wrote that song all by himself because I know Robert but he had to share credits to make that deal I'm sure..but he got a hit out of it....Robert Winters has now passed on but I won't forget those days almost 40 years ago when we were just kids trying to make it happen. |

Hey Lady M. I can tell you that Robert Winters & Fall had two LPs that I am aware of. Robert Winters was born in Detroit. He suffered from Polio from the age of 5 & was confined to a wheelchair. In fact, on the back of the Magic Man LP, he speaks of some of the obstacles that he faced. My favorite song of his is When Will My Love Be Right. That was one beautiful song, God knows I love that song. "Fall" was Walter "W.T." Turner who was also a vocalist. Robert Winters was later based in L.A. & was a session keyboardist who played with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sly, Johnny Rivers & Graham Central Station The Magic Man Lp from 1981, contained the ballads: Into My World, Magic Man, How Can Love Be Wrong & When Will My Love Be Right His L.O.V.E. Lp from 1982 contained the ballads: Do It Anyway You Want, I Love You Mom, Lady & a dance cut: Dancin' Lady. Although he only released 2 LPs, I'll always remember him for making songs about love & good vibes! Juice |

I never understood what happened to Walter Turners photo on the second LP. The act was still billed as Robert Winters & Fall. However, no picture of Walter appeared. The brother kinda looked like Issac. Also, when did Robert pass on? I never heard anything about his passing. |

Wonder, I definitely appreciate the effort. I've seen nothing regarding this on any website, not even BMI, ASCAP, etc. |

hey Juice sorry about not coming back...I had a friend of Robert's and myself trying to contact Robert's sister who still lives in SW Detroit to get the exact information, but I have not heard anything yet. from what I remember Robert died about 2 years after that 2nd LP from a illness, but it was not foul play or an accident that I'm sure but right now I don't remember the exact date or what the illness was but will find it out, thanks for the reminder. |

Hey Ron!! Thanks for the info. What I remember about that 1st LP is that while everyone loved Magic Man, I loved When Will My Love Be Right. I was a DJ at a skating rink & I used to play that song for all of my slow skate periods. What drew me into that LP is when I read what we said on the LP cover. He talked about growing up with a handicap & how people told him that he couldn't make it & how many doors were closed on him because he was wheelchair bound. His words touched me & I was pulling for him to absolutely explode with success. I bought his second LP & after that, Rap blew up & I never heard from Robert again. That's why I was surprised to learn of his passing on. As it must have been 20 years since he passed, I am chagrined, as I never knew that he was gone. I'm sorry to have learned this. I'll always remember him for some beautiful ballads & music that spoke of positivity & love! 20 years after the fact, Robert Winters...R.I.P.!!! |

I was introduced to Robert Winters in 1966 by fellow singer and friend Reggie Milner, I was real sick the night I responsed to your original post, later i really just broke down and cried just thinking about the memories and how all my friends from those days are gone. I'm glad Robert's songs touched you, I still have a couple unissued recordings we did and yes Robert could come up with some deep stuff. I could tell he was sick just by looking at his picture on the cover of The Magic Man LP, I'm sorry about not responing but I just didn't want to think about it right then. The liner notes by Robert were sure right that most doors were closed for him, I had trouble doing anything with his records on my label as soon as anyone found out he was in a wheel chair. |

Ron, I think back to the first time I read his words on that LP cover & as I read your words tonight, a tear comes to my eyes. I never knew Robert, only through playing his songs. Regardless, from that day, he was one of my favorites & I wished nothing but Platinum & Gold for him. I can only imagine the obstacles that he must have faced, but he didn't give up. Although he wasn't a world renown star, he saw his dream through & left us with some great songs in the process. He is the ultimate winner in my eyes. So many have quit, armed with much more than Robert was. So, as a friend of his, I understand the emotions that you must feel & I understand perfectly. Believe me, it's alright. You owe me no apology, I thank you for responding to me at all. I never knew him & I feel emotional just thinking back to 1981 & reading his words. I wish that I could have met him & shook his hand & tell him how proud I was of him & how inspirational his words were. I bet that his words helped a few folks to keep moving ahead. I'm sure that his words touched others who were in his situation. For that, I hope that he was able to feel that his story affected others in a positive way. God, I wish that I could hear those unissued recordings. I never knew or heard about his 1966 recordings either. Maybe someday, they'll find their way onto an expanded Magic Man CD, or, an anthology! God I hope so. Ron, you have my heartfelt thanks for sharing your memories of Robert. I really appreciate your response. Thanks again! Whenever you feel up to it, I hope that you'll share some more memories of Robert! |

I started recording Robert Winters in 1966 but we didn't release anything until 1968 and then another one in 69 they were both soul records, the songs are the quality that Robert wrote in the 80's but they were not recorded as good, but I guess ok for that time. I will put up a scan of the 69 issue in a few minutes. |
