Just got my promo copy...you folks are in for a treat!!! Quite remarkable! Mixed beautifully and painstakingly...a number of mixes have 2 different versions mixed together. I'll be playing some tracks from this set on my radioshow this coming Thursday night for those of you that want to hear that won't have a chance to get the cd before then. I'll post a reminder closer to the show's airdate. John
PS....it's not a Kazoo....dammit!

Not sure though what you mean by two different versions mixed together...

I just picked it up 5 minutes ago...WOW!

"You're My Everything" Temps & Jamerson stunning!!! You have never heard the vocals or bass like this before! Paul says "Play That Back!" at the end of the take.

I can't wait to hear more...

Hey Steve, could you tell us more about the tracks? I listened to some sound clips at circuit city.com and waiting for my copy in the mail. All the tracks sound great so far, although my 1 concern right now is for the My Girl track, they put the version without the strings on there and I personally think the strings really make the song, but then again this is the showcase for the funk brothers so I really can't complain.

Standing In The Shadows - The sound is very clean. The flutes can be heard with most of the track along with the backing vocals at the end of the song. It flips to feature piano, bongos, & the flute track.

The One Who Really Loves You - Backing vocals turned up.

Pride & Joy - Joe Hunter getting down on piano! It's the same channel as drums & bass so you can't turn it up any louder (in the mix). Backing vocals pop up.

My Girl - You get the count off & can CLEARLY hear the piano for the first time. Horns are in the song throughout. Everything is very crisp. You can HEAR Robert strum when he's not doing the lead line. It doesn't fade but runs to the end of the take.

Love Is Like An Itching - Cool count off & Diana talking about the headphones before the take. Awesome power! Very sharp guitar & the girls sing backing for the last minute of the song. I think you can also hear a KAZOO at the end?

Don't Mess With Bill - Earl Van Dyke Quartet Live (Van Dyke, Jamerson, White, & Jones) It sounds like a professional quality recording. Could there be more out there? It's great. Earl & Robert trade off leads (B-3 & guitar) but it's more Earl.

The Hunter Gets Captured - Very Jazzy with the vibes & guitar very clear. The beautiful strings are featured towards the end of the song & the harmonica is not a harmonica but a keyboard!!!!

I Second That Emotion - The Oreo Cookie guitar section is featured at the start & they feature the bass, keys, horns, & guitars alone at points. Very cool! The guitars are locked into something funky.

I Was Made To Love Her - Stevie implores "Papa Zita" to get down to start the song. Most instruments take a turn during the song. Strings & backing vocals get a few seconds too. Jamerson & the string section close the song.

I Heard It... - James' show hands down.

Home Cookin' - Great mix! No Jr. Walker at all.

For Once In My Life - A Studio B cut. Earl Van Dyke on piano is featured at the start, the string arrangement, then Earl again, & James takes the solo for the harmonica break while the guitars/strings are brought back to volume. Uriel gets a break for the last verse & everyone joins in at the end!

I Can't Get Next - AMAZING!

It's A Shame - No Clavinet. Horns & backing vocals get brought in at points. The vocals are REALLY clear & good too.

Ain't No Mountain - This is the high point of the disc! No doubts about it! The stops are breathtaking!

Mercy Mercy Me - Babbitt gets a turn on bass!

You're My Everything - The Temps & Jamerson are out of this world. It's really a treat. You can hear ALL the vocals with stunning clarity!

GO BUY IT!

Hi Millie,

It's called (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Standing In The Shadows Of Motown (Deluxe Edition). It's a 2 cd set so it's thicker than the other disc case. Plus it has a semi-white plastic slip cover over the cd case with the track lists for disc 1 & disc 2 printed on the plastic itself. The same set up is used for the "What's Going On" Deluxe Edition & other Motown deluxe editions.

It might not be filed under "Funk Brothers" but just under "Soundtracks" alphabetical at the store. I bought it at DustyGrooveAmerica (a jazz/soul/world music/odd stuff specialty store) & they put the new soul releases in a featured area.

Good luck with your search.

Oh yeah...tell Dennis he & the rest of the Funks sound INCREDIBLE on "I Can't Get Next To You"! It sounds as if you were at the session! I suppose the sound comes very close to a studio playback without any effects.

"Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey is added to disc 1 along with "Boom Boom" by John Lee Hooker & "Higher & Higher" by Jackie Wilson. Tracks 1-15 of disc 1 is the orginal "Original Soundtrack".

Disc 2 has all the new mixes on it along with Funk Brothers dialogue from the movie.

There's also a new booklet with the package.

Hi Steve. I listened to the CD. It was well done and brought back a lot of memories of making music with my friends at Hitsville. We had a great time together making great music! My book Guitars, Bars, and Motown Super Stars is shipping to the stores on June 14th. I got a second chance to relive the memories by writing about them to let others experience Motown from my perspective.

Steve - AFAIK, there never has been a clavinet on "It's a Shame".

I think the remixes on the second disc are the best sounding modern remixes of Motown tracks I have heard in years. Based on the liner notes, it sounds like they eschewed using digital tools except for the tracks where they had to time-align bounced tracks on different tapes. They don't quite say that, but that's what I read into it.

Regards,
Ken

(((Dennis))) Great job.

A certain Forum member called me, screaming on and on about how she has repeated "Scorpio" on her player over and over. She just loved your playing and mentioned how great Babbitt is. I suggested that she "go and tell it the Forum."

Well, after all that noise she made over the phone, screaming, and excitment, and grooving, all she posted above was "OVER THE TOP."

Now, Dennis, do you think I should talk to that certain member on the phone again about great music? (LOL)

Keep up the good work Dennis Coffee. When I get the book, can I get an autograph from you.

Ken - There was an old thread where Sue & I convinced ourselves that we "heard" something right before the lead vocals on the released version. It was like the audio version of the grassy knoll or something like that. Harry W. did say at the time that the session real did not have a clavinet on it but as a wise person once said...HEARING IS BELIEVING.

I know that EMI did the same for the Beatles "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" (that is digitally realign tracks that had been bounced several times). EMI really did keep every scrap of tape from every Beatles session since 1963!

Dennis - Thanks for the info on the book. I can't wait to read it.

Steve,
I didn't convince myself, actually G.C. Cameron told me that Stevie played clavinet on "It's a Shame." G.C. sang on it of course.

Harry W. and Allan Slutsky swear there's not, and they went over the track's bare bones, and looked at the notes. This is how investigations work. Why does G.C. remember that ...did Stevie play clavinet when he first played the song for him? Did he somehow get a clavinet sound?

At any rate, I didn't "convince" myself or anyone else, I asked G.C. about the session and that was his memory, faulty or otherwise.

Hi there, in the temporary absence of the Motown boards and in the spirit of the great SDF, I'd like to provide a response to the thoughts of how digital tools were used in the production of Disc 2. I am happy to be here.

Pro Tools was used for several of the mixes, so that we could recall the mix and make adjustments without setting up the board all over again. Several other tracks were mixed prior to the studio getting a PT set-up, like Standing In The Shadows Of Love, and with a couple of exceptions there was no reason to re-do those mixes in PT.

To clarify, none of the tracks required lining up elements from separate reels. Thank goodness. We'd still be working on it. All of the 16-track sessions (It's A Shame, Ain't No Mountain, Mercy Mercy Me) are self-contained. Motown didn't have that type of 'slave reel' situation until the mid-70s, when projects were taken out of house.

None of the tracks are edited down, or edited to be extended artifically.

As far as It's A Shame, if there is a clavinet on the track, perhaps Stevie Wonder overdubbed it or some type of keyboard on the two-track master, because there are no keyboards on the eight-track basics or the 16-track bump-up reel that has the vocal and horn overdubs.

That's all. We are glad the mixes have so far been received in the spirit in which they were intended. These are some bad-ass brothers.

Harry Weinger

Harry

Thanks for your contribution in getting this project completed.
There were so many great James Jamerson tunes that I almost ran off the road when I was driving. I really enjoyed "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart","The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", "I Second That Emotion", "I Heard It Through The Grapvine", "Home Cooking", "It's a Shame" and Of course "I Was Made To Love Her"-truly amazing bass playing on all cuts.
It was a real treat hearing David and Eddie singing to JJ bass playing on "Your My Everything"

Dennis C.
I finally got to hear "Scorpio" again- it had been 20 years since I have heard that tune. Outstanding job, and now I know why they spoke about Bob Babbit's playing in the movie with regards to the song- Wow. Was his solo planned to go on an on as it did? Fantastic

Now if we can only get several more Funk Brother c.d. put out.
The $29 at Borders was well worth it.

Thank You

It was great to hear Scorpio again after all these years (and it still smokes too) Anybody who even thinks they're a musician or know what Motown was all about ought to have this disk in their collection. Nuff said.

one of my favorite moments, besides all the others mentioned: when Uriel Jones turns the majestic Ain't No Mountain into a brief funk jam at the end, after the released version has faded out. He does other crazy s*&! like that at the end of Home Cookin' too.

Anyone else got one or two?

HW -

SITSOM Deluxe is really great, I am enjoying it a lot.

I do have one question about the new version of "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game." Where is the extra verse (or its instrumental equivalent) that appears on the version used in the Marvelettes' Millenium Collection CD and was also on the original LP Anthology from the 1970s?

I would have thought that the "extra verse" section would have been on the original session multitrack tape..... Is there some kind of "history" about the different edits of the song?

Thanks!

Thanks the Funk Brothers and HW and the rest of you who are involved... Great work!
It's hard to pick a favourite track because they are all so good, but maybe I'd go for these:

I Second That Emotion
Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart
Standing In The Shadows Of Love

I am really looking forward to hear more material!
Best wishes, Funk Timo

I got my SITSOM Deluxe about a week ago, thanks to whoever posted the CD Universe link above, and man, this was just what I was hoping for when I heard "Bernadette" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" on the original soundtrack. I held off on buying that one because, as laudable as the cover versions were, there's no way I would ever prefer to hear them over the originals.

Anyway, I am blown away by the naked tracks for: "I Was Made to Love Her", which sounds like a rock and roll instrumental with an endlessly creative Jamerson bassline. No offense to Stevie but this track is so good I almost prefer it without his harmonica and vocals.

"Love is Like an Itching in My Heart", the slammin-est pedal to the metal Motown track next to "Uptight". I get tickled hearing a snatch of Diana complaining about her malfunctioning earphones before the track kicks off. When Earl Van Dyke's piano comes in, it's almost startles you how hard he's hitting those ivories!

"Mercy Mercy Me" is pure class and warmth. You can practically hold your hands out to the speakers on a cold day and warm up to that track. Even without the lyrics, there's a generosity of spirit that you can still discern in the playing.

"The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" was always one of the slinkiest, jazzy tracks the Marvelettes ever cut and should have been a Top 5 hit instead of peaking out at #13. It's a shame that oldies radio seems to have amnesia about this cut. Love the harmonica; sounds like something Augustus Pablo tried to recreate on his melodica on those haunting dub reggae cuts of the 70's.

"Standing in the Shadows of Love", "It's a Shame", "Pride and Joy", heck there's nothing superfluous on here and I hope this will be only the first of a series of similar naked classic treatments to come. Oh, let me hasten to add that I nearly forgot to breathe during the final, bonus cut with James Jamerson accompanying Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin on "You're My Everything". Kudos and a tip of the old fedora to Mr. Slutsky and everyone involved with this classy project.

Motownboy: I wondered about "Hunter Gets Captured" myself. Maybe the extra version was made possible AFTER the basic recording was made. For instance, a duplicate of part of the tape could have been spliced into the middle of a new edit of the recording, and the vocals were probably recorded across the tape splices. Voila! (maybe..?)

Just a guess. HW, what do you think?

After all that editing, could the verse have been deleted for radio playability, thus two released versions?

Hi TD. Babbit created that great bass solo on Scorpio. We were all jamming and having fun on the breakdown.

Hi Juicefree20. Thanks for the compliment. The book should be in the stores any time. I expect to get mine this week. I just got back from doing an interview at United Sound Studios for a BBC documentary segment on soul music. It was the first time I had been back in that studio since 1985. The owner David Hood seems real nice and the studio looks good.

I pick up my Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Deluxe the other day. I must say I haven't been this exciting about buying a CD in a long time. Let me just say that the Funk Brother are Flat Out One Bad Ass Band.
