How do you guys feel about Flo's dismissal from The Supremes in 1967? Do you think that Diana had anything to do with it? If so, do you think that Diana's relationship with Barry Gordy Jr. was influential in the decision? Flo was a very beautiful woman. She died in February 1976 at 32 years old, leaving behind 3 little girls. Let us hear what you have to say. (especially if you were around during that time, what do you remember of the situation...How did Detroit react to the "planned" but sudden change) |

Dear DTurner, I was very hurt when I heard Florence was no longer going to be with the Supremes. The story that I heard was she wanted to spend time with her family. At that time I was a young teen and very naive about the music business practices at that time. I did not equate her leaving the Supremes with anything other than what was told to the public at that time. Since that time, I have heard many different versions of why Flo left the Supremes, they all include some references to Diana and Berry. I do know that I loved the Supremes, they were an inspiration to all the young black teen girls of that era. |

When I was 15, the Supremes were in town taping an Ice Capades special. I skipped school and sat in the hotel lobby until they arrived from the taping. I had already fessed up and called my parents to tell them where I was and my father said he'd come to get me after 9 when he got off of work. The ladies all noticed me and Florence and Mary stayed with me until my father arrived to make sure I got home safely (about 15 minutes). The next day I did the same thing, and they again hung around until my father gathered me up. There was no way my parents were going to keep me from the Supremes so they just went along with it. I have the most wonderful memories of both Flo and Mary. And after all these years, I still see Mary whenever I can and it's still as exciting as the first time I ever saw the Supremes. |
