...16 and a half million posts on this group, and counting, to date, and I'd like to know what makes this group so damned popular...and don't give me that to each his own stuff!

This group has done zero to warrant all of this popularity over groups with far greater resumes... Yeah, the ladies are beautiful, but so what! There are zillions of good looking girl groups who were better, and some even mediocre, and they don't get the props and love this group gets...

Please, someone with a level head, please explain to me why this group deserves all the love they get... I cannot for the life of me, understand the phenomenon...

Peace!
Isaiah

I love the Three Degrees, but I have noticed that they are extremely popular on this board.....more than one might expect, since they had so many contemporaries.

For me, they are one of several "girl groups" from that era I like......But I'm like you, Isaiah....I wouldn't necessarily put them head and shoulders above everyone else. I've always been more partial to The Emotions, myself....

Maybe it was that classic Sanford and Son appearance!! After all, if Rollo is your manager, what more could you want? Heh..heh....

Deep, Galactus, Deep(LOL!)

Hey, for the lovers of this group, I hope y'all will understand that I aint hatin' on this group... Clearly, I loved a few of the joints they did, but damn, they still aint all worth this much commotion, now(LOL!) Unless Rollo ran off with all y'alls tickets for that '70's concert, or something???(smile!)

Peace!

For me I'm just partial to female groups. The 3Degrees are just special in their own right and have the qualification of a good group of female singers: Beautiful, great vocals and sophistication. What more can you ask for. Galactus, I'm with you I am partial to the Emotions also. Now that's a group with a great tight sound, in every sister combonation.

he....what a thing to say! have you ever seen this group in concert! I'm sure you haven't....this is pure class, stylish, in their own style! being more than 30 years on the road....you have to be good! selling out! having more than 21 gold records, albums that were big in Europe and the Far East.....who were never released in the USA....you can hear their songs frequently on the European radiostations.
Another quality they have is that they are friendly and always have time for their admirers....if you know them! you can understand what i'm talking about....

Isaiah, I'll have to go with you on this one
- I've never quite "got" the Three Degrees.

I wonder how many people are old enough to remember
how they were regarded by one of the Black Music
magaazines in the UK in the early seventies -
"soulless Barbie Dolls" was one of the typical comments.

I don't think they're THAT popular - it's just that the half dozen or so people who post about them post a hell of a lot - I'd have to say it's a thread I tend to rarely open.

Davie

roddee,

I picked up the "Wattstax" DVD a month ago and The Emotions are awesome in that film. They are singing in a church at one point, and man.....what voices! Folks must've thought God's angels were visiting them for the Sunday service!!!

I have 2 Live albums and other recording by the
3degres and I would not say they were soul-less. The ladis could bring to you. Just listen to the Roulette & the Gamble & Huff stuff and you could hear what I'm talking about. Fayette has the smooth soprano,Val with gritty middle and Sheila on lead or alternating leads with Val mad a very soulful trio in the 70's

The fact they're still standing after all these years is impressive in itself. How many girl groups are still around after all that time? Darn few. The Supremes have been altered and watered down after 40 years. Most of the groups are long gone. The Emotions are still here and are powerful as ever, but time wise, The 3Degrees have a longer resume and time span. Can anyone else name a girl group that is still intact as long as The Three Degrees? Would be interesting topic in itself. And....When Will I See You Again?

Ok...this is a good topic.I will say my peace...We have read and seen a lot from the old forum to the new. Even when Mr. and Mrs. Barrett entered. I disagree saying that they are an ordinary group. They are a group that had their OWN SOUND and STYLE and could sing any type of music. Pop, Soul, R&B, Country and in different languages. No other girl group did that. Each girl in the groups history (Fayette Pinkey, Helen Scott, Janet Harmon, Sheila Ferguson, Valerie Holiday, and Cynthia Garrison) brought something different to the group. Of course the groupings of Fayette and Helen with Sheila and Valerie are the most popular. But they could make any song their own and adapt to any style. Their harmonies are still to this day unmatched by any girl group. I will withhold my comments as much as possible regarding their management but Mr. Barrett did know what he was doing when he thru these girls together. They had a magic on stage and still do. It is a shame that Valerie, Helen, and Cynthia cannot perform in the US but that is another topic. They bring a higher class to the stage than the Supremes did. The biggest thing about them was you heard diversity in lead vocals between Sheila and Valerie. Fayette and Helen were the sopranos and had to hold up the top but gave leads their all in a live performance setting. But the fact that they are still here, had the Royal seal of approval, and yes they did have soul says a lot.
