Each day being the Chancellor of Soul becomes more amazing. Last night, I attended an event that took place at the ledgendary Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, home of pastors Adam Clayton Powell Sr. and Jr. Guest speakers included Bob Law (radio personality of WRKS Kiss FM Radio here in NY), and ledgedary artists Chuck Jackson and music innovator Mr Lloyd Price. Dionne Warwick was schuduled to attend but was out of the country on tour, as Chuck Jackson mention. Also spotted in the audience was saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood, 'The Prince Of Harlem' who by the way is celebrating his 50th anniversary in show biz ! The meeting took place to support artists who have not received royalties for their recordings, still be released on countless CD's. The highlight of the evening for myself was the reunion that took place between Sam Cully, Ervan Waters, and Tom Price (known as the Diplomats) and Northern Soul great, Tony Drake. They were the background singers on all of Tony's recordings on the Musicor label. Sam Cully handed me the Diplomats' new CD and as soon as I got home, I put it on my stereo and was in soul paradise !!! The Diplomats were known for such hits as ' Here's A Heart', 'Accept Me' and 'In The Ghetto'. Please make you add this CD on your musical shopping list ! I also learned that Sam and the group have just returned from the U.K. and now plans are being made to discuss to reunite Tony Drake & The Diplomats, on a world tour to perform 'Let's Play House' and other hits that were recorded by the original artists !! The group will also be featured as the Skull Snaps, as they were in the U.K. Other Northern Soul acts are being added to the tour. I will pass on any infomation as soon as I receive it. If anyone knows the wherebouts of singer Lou Courtney please e-mail me at: Mikeboone2@aol.com. The meeting also spoke of issues like how the release of Chuck Jackson and Dionne Warwick duet CD in 2000, received little or no airplay at all from black radio stations and why our soul greats are classified as Oldies acts, while Pop acts like the Rolling Stone, who has been perfoming for more than 40 years, are still not considered to be Oldies but Goodies performers ! There were also an Q&A audience participation, where some of the questions were directed at Chuck and Lloyd about artist infringements of copyright laws. Ledgedary songwriter Otis Blackwell's daughter also attended representing her father as well. It was a musical education evening that I will never forget. It will forever be etched in my memory bank for a long long time. Soulfully yours! Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

Yeah Dyva & Soul Sister ! It was a blast ! Both Lloyd and Chuck are very nice. Yeah Dyva, it's extremely important to keep artists like them in the mix for music fans like ourselves. SS, I do have that CD and yes you're correct I did too enjoy the duet between Chuck & Dionne. Too bad various radio stations here didn't feel the same way. Take care, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

HEY MIKE, I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE, IF FOR NOTHING ELSE BUT TO MEET YOU AND SHAKE CHUCK JACKSONS HAND. IF IT WASN'T FOR CHUCK, THERE WOULD NOT HAVE A SPYDER TURNER VERSION OF STAND BY ME. AND ALSO I'M ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE ARTIST THAT TO THIS DAY HAVE NOT SEEN A ROYALTY STATMENT OR GET PAID, SO I MISSED A GOOD ONE |

Hi Spyder, I'm sorry to hear that you never received any royalties for your work. I damn sure know that SOMEBODY collected some cash for Stand By Me, which was a favorite record of mine as a youngster. I hope that you receive what is due you! Hey Chancellor, Good story, as Here's A Heart was a song that I discovered in the early 90s, thanks to Felix & The Rhythm Revue. A lot of people also forget the role that Lloyd had with Muhammad Ali & The Thrilla In Manila. They also forgeet that he was the one who pulled Don King into that promotion. Yet another person burned by Mr. King. Lloyd was another of our pioneers, setting up his own music labels. KevGo will be happy to hear the news about Tony Drake. I wish success for all! |

Hey Juice ! It's funny you mentioned the history between Lloyd Price and Don King because they mentioned the HBO movie 'Only In America' at the meeting. Thanks again my brother ! Peace, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |
