Herbie Hancock??? George Benson...yeah, he's both!(LOL!) Wayne Henderson...got that Side Effect piece fired up in the '70's, and aint never lived it down... Randy Crawford...eh, what is she anyway, jazz or soul???(smile!) Laylah Hathaway...her daddy gave her all that juice up in there, in those pipes, heart and mind... Will Downing...nuff said... Neneh Freelon... Nancy Wilson...well, the lady can do whatever she damned well pleases... So long as she sings it she brings it... I guess there are a great many more Soul artists with the Jazz sensibility than the other way around, but I'm sure you guys have some choices... Bring 'em... I'm all ears...(smile!) Peace! Isaiah |

GEETEE, you stealin' my thunda, man, with that Ronnie Laws selection!(smile!) Thought I'd sneak up on here while y'all was "sleepin'", and make myself look all in da know by selecting Ronnie(smile!) Damn, I feel like Mary Wells 'bout now - Ya Beat Me to The Punch, man...(smile!) And Roy Ayers has got to be a beast up in a thread like this, but what is he??? Is he really JAZZ or is he SOUL??? I love it, don't you???(smile!) SoulSister, Miles Jaye...Yep! Al Jarreau...Yep! And Quincy Jones, Mr. Killa Joe, Himself???? YEP! In fact, Quincy and Ray doing Let The Good Times Roll, may qualify him as one of the arch architects of the Soul Jazz style... Excelllent selection!!! GEETEE, Donald Byrd and his BlackByrds are a unanimous selection, no doubt... But EW&F Jazz Artists??? I don't know, brother(smile!) Maybe you oughta visit that other thread... Stuff's confusing, aint it(smile!) Peace! Isaiah |

Hello Submarine! Some artists have been mentioned by you all and also some of my favorites as Geetee who mentioned Lonnie Liston Smith. He got really soul when only plays keyboards and when he sings he is very soulful. I agree also with many others as Quincy Jones, Grover Whashington, Crusaders, Blackbyrds, Donald Byrd, George Benson, Ramsey Lewis,... I wanna add: -Monk Montgomery -Eddie Palmieri -Deodato -Blue Mitchel -Neil Larsen -Wayne Henderson (Hey, Isaiah, what about the incredible trombone solo in "Serenity"? -O'Donel Levy -Lonnie Smith ("Afrodesia"!!) -Johnny Hamond -Bob James -David Sanborn -Airto & Flora -Mongo Santamaria -Eric Gale -Cal Tjader -Cannonball Adderley -Luis Gasca -Nat Adderley -Nina Simone ... Many jazz artists got soul!! Peace & Jazz-Soul Food! |
