David Peaston's version of Can I leads me to believe he coulda been a contenda... Donny Hathaway...just about everything he sang reeked of a love of the jazz idiom, as well as gospel... Marvin Gaye...the silky soul singer could turn on his jazz vibes anytime he wanted to, and few would notice or care, so smooth and seamless as he was... Jerry Butler...another one who had the style and sensuality of a jazzman in his delivery... Lou Rawls...the obvious... Chaka Khan can do Jazz...if anyone hadn't noticed(smile!) Phyliss Hyman...another NATURAL... Luther Vandross...its all up in his SOUL(smile!) Anita Baker...who'd a thunk it! Michael Henderson on Valentine Love Jean Carn...style and pipes tailor-made for Jazz... George Benson...naw, isn't he a Jazz artist with Soul sensibility???(smile!) Peace! Isaiah |

Oh, yeah, Handsome, Miki Howard, forgot about her!!!(smile!) How about Bobby Caldwell??? Cat had some Jazz chops, too... Natalie Cole is another skipped rat on past me, too(smile!) Believe it or not, EW&F would also fit that category, and so would KOOL&theGANG... I guess you could actually put a bunch of the Funk Bands in this category, as they often vacilated back and forth in their songs... I always felt that the Ohio Players had an underlying Jazz current in their songs... Heaven Must Be Like This is so Jazz it might as well be Jazz(smile!) Ooops, think I heard somebody say the Funk Brothers was Jazziacs until that old devil music start payin' 'em a better penny...(smile!) Peace! isaiah |

Hey, SoulSister, I'll add Jill Scott to that list, as well... Erykah Badu, Randy Crawford, Laylah Hathaway, they could be easily considered Jazz artists with their STYLINGS... Good Choices... Now, let me get over to the Jazz Artists with Soul Sensibilities...(smile!) Peace! Isaiah |

Greetings Isaiah. Funny you should mention that. In reading these posts, the first thing that came to my mind was that many of these names are not soul artists with jazz sensibilities at all. Most of them are actually JAZZ artists with SOUL sensibilities. Another excellent thread. |

Isaiah, Would Gloria Lynn fit into this category IYO?? I've always dug her, I don't know if she's classified as jazz or r&b?? When I bought a few compilations of hers a few years ago, I found them in the jazz section. Most of her songs though have a r&b-jazz feel to them, no? One of my favorites of hers is "The Folks Who Live On The Hill". |

I don't know Morgan, but I know I'm gettin' confused like a mug on these thread titles(smile!) Got me spazin'(smile!) Nah, but seriously, Gloria Lynne had that cool, laid-back style most folks associate with the Jazz genre, and that particular song is definitely jazz cool... I've never heard her singing that cut, but I know her and the cut, so sounds good from here(smile!) Its a subjective thing, Morgan, so if you're hearing JAZZ up in there, I trust your judgement(smile!) Have you heard Natalie Cole's treatment of that song, Morgan??? Cool and sleek... Astrud Gilberto-like, a samba-bossa nova thing... Natalie seems to specialize in that sort of thing... Diva Voices like Aretha and Patti's wouldn't fit..(smile!) Yeah, Gary, I agree(smile!) These artists blur the line, and their multi-genre styles creates such a beautiful synthesis of sound... Ultimately, who gives a damn what genre they've been labeled as, right???(smile!) Peace! Isaiah |

Isaiah, No, never heard Natalie's version, is this on an album? If so, which one? I've never been a big fan of hers, although I do like some of her cuts. This last song you mentioned, "I Wish You Love"- Gloria's version of that is pretty mellow too. |

Morgan, yes, I did Soul Artists with Jazz Sensibilities and another thread with Jazz Artists with Soul Sensibilities, and the stuff has me major dizzy at this point(LOL!) In fact, at this point, folks could put Lawrence Welk as a Funk man, and I wouldn't know what was happenin', I'm so confused(smile!) Story of my life, Morgan, enjoy!(smile!) Regarding the Natalie version of Fool Up on The Hill, I don't know what album that was on, but her version was pretty nice, particularly if you dig that song... I've actually heard Gloria Lynne's version of I wish you Love, and I loved that version as well... Shirley Bassey did I Wish You Love, too, and I dug it(smile!) I guess it's the song itself that I love... Its very poetic... Peace! isaiah |

"My breaking heart and I agree"..... Ahhhhh Isaiah! You're getting a little "mushy" there! The lyrics of that song are nice. Shirley Bassey....that's one artist who's not represented in my music portfolio! I've always liked her songs (the few i've heard) because I dig her singing voice! I think i'll go out and get something of hers...thanks Isaiah. |

DVD Mike, Ebony Woman is gorgeous! A very jazzy and beautiful dedication... Thanks for bringing that info to this discussion... SoulSister, I think a lot of the Neo-Soul artists bring that to the game, both, as a means of distinguishing themselves from SOUL and the newer R&B... Also, since Erykah Badu is somewhat the reigning queen of that style, others are trying to emulate her... I gotta say that Jill Scott just has that kind of soul, a jazz soul, and she does it well... India.Arie, how 'bout her, too??? Another artist I think of as having a Jazz soul is Basia... Peace! Isaiah |

Hello Submarine again! I agree with many artists you all mentioned. Some are very obvious as Lou Rawls and Billy Paul. Billy Paul got the two Lp's absolutely jazzy that DvdMike mentioned but, IMHO, ALL his discography is a blend of jazz and soul and some albums got some tracks that are simply jazz as "Treasure Of My Life" (from "First Class") or "I Was Married" (from "war Of The Gods") or "Be Truthful To Me" (from "Got My Head On Stright"). Some others: -Jean Carn -Bill Whiters -Some tracks by Spinners got swing as in "Games People Play" -Some tracks by O'Jays also got swing as in "Big Gangster" or "My Favorite Person" -Many tracks by Dee Dee Sharp in his PIR years are very jazzy as "A Really Hard Day" -Incognito and Maysa Leak -El Debarge -Carmen Lundy -John Lucien -.... And many more i can't remember by now Peace & Soul Food |

Sup Moan, great list there brother! It seems like the Laws Family definitely has a place in both of these threads...(smile!) Ramsey Lewis is also a great selection, too... How about Keith Washington... Kissing You was such a jazzy song back in the day... Haven't heard much from this guy since... Peace! isaiah |

Will Downing deserves a mention. He's done 10 albums so far...many of them include some jazzy material. He even did a straight ahead jazz set with Gerald Albright in 1998. |
