I didn't say 1Wicked, I said MOST Wickedest live album performance from a sho nuff soul man or woman artist...(smile!) Listen, 1Wicked, I was up in the supermarket recently, and suddenly Marvin's Distant Lover Live came over the speakers, and stopped everybody from shopping, particularly during the parts of the song when the audience at that long ago concert explodes into ecstatic screams... The thing is ethereal, man, and you can feel 30 years later what that audience must've been feeling in that steamy joint with the weed blowin'a groove orgy up in there...(whew!) Sam's Harlem Square piece is my favorite next to Marvin's Distant Lover - ironic aint it???(smile!) Well, those are my two choices.... Perhaps, Earth Wind & Fire doing their REASONS thing??? What's y'alls??? Peace! Isaiah |

Isaiah: Ya know...Classic Soul can just have that effect...then, now, & forevermore ! But speaking of Marvin Gaye...log in to www.BroadcastURBAN.com. Go to Stevie Wonder's KJLH and at some point request (fax or e-mail ?) their re-mix of "Let's Get It On". I'm usually a purist & don't go in for this sort of thing (messing with the Classics)...but using the same vocal track & totally different instrumentation, they breathe new life into "LGIO" & almost made me forget that Marvin was no longer with us ! It sounds like something Marvin might have just dropped on us. I'm tellin' ya...it's a Stepper's Groove that'll even make the Chi-town folks say "Arrrrrrah who ??" |

Parliament Funkadelic works for me, too. George's Mothership, Aqua Boogie, and Atomic Dog tours in the late 70s and early 80s rocked better than anybody Some of the best live shows I've ever seen. Chi Drummer...which album contains the live version of "Cosmic Slop"? That one is a monsta. |

Morgan: "Tonight Is The Night" is (reportedly) not a "LIVE" cut. Listen to the background audience noise & the lack of modulation...+ the fact that it sounds like it was looped. If it were true audience participation...there would be highs and lows in the sound level. |

1Wicked, I gotta try that site, man... I've heard a lot of Marvin's old stuff being redone, or remixed, or live, and that guy was always experimenting...(smile!) A friend of mine let me listen to a live version of Come Get to This that was slowed down, and given a whole other vibe... Sounded great, though I'll take the album version of the song... I just like getting different takes from Marvin... He always brought something different and fresh to the mix... Peace! Isaiah |

Morgan, 1Wicked is right, although a stone jam the audience was added to the recording on that particular song. |

I'd like to nominate two great live albums put out by Atlantic around 1964. The first was recorded at the Uptown in Philly and featured the Drifters, Vibrations, Patty & the Emblems and several others. The other was recorded live at the Apollo with Otis Redding, the Coasters, Patti & the Bluebelles and others. As both were engineered by Tom Dowd, they sound great, especially for that era. One was released on Atco, the other on Atlantic, but I think of them as a matched set. These two discs capture a great moment--just as Sixties Soul was ready to explode. I don't think either is currently available on American CDs, which is a great shame. Best wishes, Stu Green |

Gary, "Hard Core Jollies" Funkadelic 1976 had the live "COSMIC SLOP" The non live version is on the "COSMIC SLOP" album, the non live is 5min. 7sec. long. Both bad as hell. The lyrics are kool as to what the song is about. "COUNT" |

It's also available on P-Funk All Stars, Live at the Beverly Theater in Hollywood and on the four disk set Parliament Funkadelic Live 1976-93. The track off of Hardcore Jollies is still the best though. |

Count: Sorry about the CRS..but are there two live versions of Cosmic Slop, or am I thinking of another Funkadelic cut...recorded in an airplane hangar somewhere ? It just seems like it was later than '76...whichever cut it is that I'm thinking of. |

I would have to put Millie Jackson's Live & Uncensored on this list. If you've heard it, you know what I mean. I would also include Sylvesters' Living Proof on this LP. No so much for the Disco stuff, but he actually had some pretty damn good music on that LP. However, merely on the strength of the fact that he unleashed the bomb known as Two Tons Of Fun & their masterpiece, You Are My Friend. That is simply one of the greatest live performances that I've ever heard! |

Juice and Isaiah...Aside from Martha and Izora's incredible vocals on "You Are My Friend", check out Sylvester's backup band. Those cats are TIGHT. The elegant keyboard work, the crisp drumming, the classy flute arrangement during the intro to the song, those dynamitte cresendos during the chorus ("Been around, and around...). You said it right: A Masterpiece. |
