This is good news. I have been a fan of hers for years and it's good to see she is getting the recognition she has always deserved. |

Bettye LaVette wins "Best Comeback Blues Artist" Award, 2004 for A Woman Like Me. The Blues Foundation honors outstanding Blues artists and musicians through the annual Memphis WC Handy Blues Awards - the highest recognition bestowed on Blues artists in the music industry. This year The Blues Foundation selected Bettye LaVette's A Woman Like Me" as "Blues Comeback Album of the Year". Bettye was also nominated in three other categories - Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year - Soul Blues Album of the Year - and Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year. In an online poll for About.com she was voted the winner in all four categories. The 25th W.C. Handy Blues Awards proved to be one of the most successful events in Foundation history. The silver anniversary was held in before a sold-out crowd at the Cannon Center Ballroom in Memphis, TN on Thursday, April 29, 2004. More than 25 nominees performed throughout the evening, which featured a dinner, silent auction and of course the presentation of the awards. Everyone has their own highlights.. Bettye LaVette's moving acceptance speech and performance was among the many. (Message edited by benlynx on October 13, 2004) |

I think we spoke about this well-deserved award a while ago, but Betty deseves all the praise she gets - and more. Some of her great (earlier) recordings: Let Me Down Easy, You'll Never Change, Ticket To The Moon, Thank You For Loving Me.... all incredible songs. And she is too. |

Bettye Lavette deserves every accolade that comes her way. She is an amazing singer and should be given more recognition in my opinion. |

Congratulations to Betty. I had the pleasure of interviewing her several years ago and she was about the nicest, most sincere artist I have ever met face to face. I'm happy to see her get recognized in this way; she truly desreves it. Nice pix, Fred! (Message edited by gary on October 14, 2004) |

Kdub, I wished you could have been with me January of this year. She was in town along with Howard Tate. You're right, she looks GREAT in person, plus she has a great personality. BTW, I still have the photos from 2003 at Rosa's. I have to dig them up and try to post them on the forum. :-) |
