Greetings All, How in the world have you all been? Fine I hope. I've just been chilling and looking for a job. I've got some good prospects - so when the Lord is ready - I will be employed. LOL! I might have to have surgery on my knee - and (k)needless to say - that's a bummer. LOL! I've mentioned before that Larry Graham is my all time fave musician. I just love him. I was just listening to "Sex Machine" again last evening - and My God! Larry had that guitar talking and what not for days. The drums is my fave instrument - and Larry is credited with filling in some drum parts thru his guitar playing. That in my book is an amazing feat indeed. I also love B.B. King. I love the way Kenny G. blows his thing too. Does anyone have a favorite all time musician? By the way - most websites list the singers as musicians. I suppose their singing voices are instruments too. |

All, Hey SS. Thanks for your well wishes indeed. You are soooooo sweet and swell. I have been back and forth to the doctors about my overused right arm and my knee. Finally - I went to an Ortho - and he apprised me on what was happening with my creaking and cracking body. LOL! He told me to use a bike to help my knee. Instead - I am laying in the bed - lifting my hips and moving my legs like I am riding a bike. The surgery would be outpatient - so not so serious. As far as the job is concerned - I ain't even worried. I will find the right one at the right time - and when the Lord decrees it - indeed. Besides - when would I eva get a vacation like this again? One must live for today. Of course - I could retire permanently if I found the right man. LOL! Which thread are you speaking about? When are you two off again for Mr. Scott's 7000th gig? LOL! And bless his sweet heart. Please tell him that I said - yello. |

Hey All, Hey Manny. LOL SS. I mentioned that I'd never gone to an island and I want to. Mind you though - that if it was never meant to be - I wouldn't even sweat it - but if it is meant for me to venture to one - I'd pick Barbados. I even got my daughter interested. Her eyes lit up when I showed her the printouts about Barbados. So - I have to include her. LOL! Hey Vonnie girl. Thanks. I missed y'all too. I just stopped posting to the three boards I usaully post to for a minute - because I was trying to concentrate on my health and in finding a J.O.B.. I am at peace about both now. I didn't want my daughter to think that I was a loafer and wasn't trying to find work. I've just been seriously trying to find work for about a month or so - so at this point - my mental telepathy and prayers are being fortified. I should be working soon. Sometimes one has to put all of their eggs and energy into just one basket - so the Lord can hear one loud and clear. I think - I've done that now. Praise the Lord. I pray for peace of mind - and I was being agitated about the two things mentioned above. I still had faith - yet I had to take time to center my energy around the things that were most important to me. I hope you are doing well also Vonnie. Y'all have done so well in your pickings indeed. Yes Prince can play many instruments - I hear. How about Louis Armstrong? He could blow also. |

I have to agree with Bruce Miller ... Joe Messina is a class act. When I was in the Sunliners, I looked up to Joe, then when I went to Motown, It was a real treat working with Joe in the studio. I've had the pleasure of working with the top musicans over the years, and Joe was the class act. |

All, Hey Bruce Miller. I am honored to have you post to this thread - and your first post here lately too. I am still waiting on my copy of the Sammy Davis Jr. tape. LOL! Please tell Stubass - I said yello. And Russ - thank you too. I am sure Joe Messina is great - because I have always loved the music he played on @ Motown. http://www.bassharp.com/joemes sbio.htm You all are "Bringing It On Home" indeed. DyvaNaye - you go girl. Most of the ones you listed - I grew up on also. My father had many of those musicians works, and I still have them. He loved Les McCann and Ramsey Lewis. He just loved Jazz. I'll have to pull some of the other musician's works I have that aren't listed here. Bobby something or another is on the tip of my brain. LOL! Is the last name Blueband? I also love - Michael Franks - George Duke - Ronnie Laws - and what was his name - Chic somebody? I think he is Puerto Rican. Sounds like (Corian) My Bad. What about Cab Calloway? Hey Morgan and Go Get Gone Girl, like Dyvanaye I own recordings by all the folk I listed, and Morgan you shamed me for leaving out Jackie Mclean and Hank Mobley, but the great thing about Jazz is that many of these guys played together and made some of the finest music ever.... hmmmm lets see Hank & John 2 Tenors "On it". Donald Byrd and Herbie. Although we discuss R&B artists more than any other, Jazz is and has always been my type of music to collect. The history of our people can be traced through these artists. I was exposed to jazz at a very young age but I didn't quite understand it well enough to be articulate until I was in my late thirties and I am still learning from jazz today. Great thread people...... |

Man, y'all goin' crazy on this thread(smile!) Fuggedabouit! Hey, Morgan and Kdub, y'all went Jazz on me, baby! Ya Got Potentiaaaaaaal!(smile!) Did you guys see Wynton Marsalis on 60 Minutes last night??? This guy, I usta couldn't stand the boy, but I gots mad respect for what he's done to perpetuate the Jazz Legacy... This Time-Warner Building Jazz Hall will seat 1,600 exclusively for jazz, and the joint looks like a freakin' old style opera house... This building is happening right up under my nose in Manhattan, and I didn't know nothing about it until last night... They've got an additional Free concert Jazz Hall they've built at Lincoln Center, as well, and that's just like breath-taking!!! The musicians will be playing against an all glass backdrop of the Manhattan skyline for an audience of 500 - for free! This place is gorgeous, all mahogony floor and seating, and a glass window that looked like it was 50 yards by 50 yards... All of it attributable to Wynton's promotion of Jazz in New York City... Props Wynton... Peace! Isaiah |

"Boss Tenors"- Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt-smokes! Kdubya- Hey! Another Blue Note fan! Just thought I would get my boys mentioned up in here! Speaking of Jackie McLean- I think he had some of the dopest album titles! A Few: One Step Beyond Destination Out! Let Freedom Ring Capuchin Swing Jackie's Bag A Fickle Sonace Jacknife And he was fine as hell!! Iasiah, Boy do I envy you New Yawkers! Although I hear the ticket prices for JALC are pretty up there, I would spend whatever amount at least once! just to be able to say "yeah, I was there!" I hear it's gorgeous. No, I didn't see "Pulitzer-prize winner Wynton Marsalis on 60 minutes! Dang! Yeah, he's arrogant and he was really working my last "good nerve" during the Ken Burns Jazz series, but I really admire him for the way he's been able to deal with his sucess, no drugs, drink or any of the other self-destructive habits that took away soooooo many of the jazz folks on many of our lists. He gets much respect from me. That's funny ...Kenny G. and jazz...LOL!!! Seriously Go Girl, I'm not faulting anyone for liking Kenny "smooth jazz" G. He's made a few songs that I like. |

Hey All, LOL! Destruction - what are you dissing me about now? First older men - and now Kenny. The thread title doesn't have the word Jazz in it. LOL! And if you want to know the real 411 -my question was name your favorite musician. As in ONE person that played ONE instrument that you loved. In other words - here we go to that deserted island again. If one could take the actual ONE artist that brought their specific instrument w/them to serenade one with - whom would it be? Now! LOL! Again - I named Larry Graham. I know my fave. Meaning - that I would try to sneak Larry over there with me to the island and seduce him into playing his Bass Guitar just for me. I would start w/"Sex Machine" - and then I would ask him to hit me up with (Play) - "Can You handle this - Larry." LOL! Now! C. Bell - Bruce Miller & Russ named just one. LOL! And that is what I was trying to get at. I'll be back with this one - for I am not finished w/you as of yet - Destruction. I'll tell 'ya now! And - I love the way Kenny G. plays his instrument. And I especially love his X-mas CD. That boy is bad IMO. Now! (Message edited by gogogirl on October 14, 2004) (Message edited by gogogirl on October 14, 2004) |

Hello Submarine again, soulful ladies & gentelmans! Hey, Gogogirl! I'm glad you likes also Bob James! I likes specially "Women Of Ireland" and some albums featuring Earl Klugh and David Sanborn. And despite the fact for my taste Kenny G is too much bland and "easy-listening", i likes a Kenny G gem, "Songbird", is very mellow. Isaiah; We played that "gig" at Lincoln Center in September of 2001, it's called Kaplan's Penthouse. Yes, it is awesome wall to wall glass looking out on the city, as I sat there I wondered what it would look like with snow falling down, beautiful "gig". We'll be at Lincoln Center again, this time at the "new" Rose Concert Hall in November. S.S. |

Yeah Destruction the album you mention is a jam. This thread is so taxing. Kenny G, The Michael Bolton of Elevator music......ha, ha, ha, I was laughing so hard tears came to my eyes, there is no need to discuss him further, I have a couple of his sides but he is far to "whiney" for me. ROTFLOL!!!!!! So since I have mentioned the "G", let me close this post by apologizing once again for my omission of a Saxophone God: Mr. Sonny Rollins. Lord aint the music grand ! Robb K was right it's impossible to list just one.....Lastly for you jazz fans out there There is no note, Like "Blue Note". |

Manny, My soulful brother, I was so happy to see you mention Roberto Roena and the Fania-All Stars. I used to listen to their music all the time. Manny did Roberto Roena record a song entitled "Mi Corazon"? I seem to remember that song was by him but I'm not sure. Can you shed some light on who recorded this song. Thanks! |

Hey, my "salsoulful" sister Vonnie! Hi have visited sometimes this page dedicated to Mr. Combo (aka Roberto Roena): http://www.salsaclasica.com/ro bertoroena/indice.asp Here you can see all his songs in alphabethic order and the albums where belongs and not appears this song you mentioned. The only lylrics I knows by Fania All-Stars that includes the phrase "Mi corazn" is in the Gipsy King's cover of "Bamboleo" (sings Celia Cruz and features Roberto). I likes specially the cover of Otis Redding's "Sitting In The Dog Of The Bay" as "El pato de la baha" (the duck of the bay"!) by Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound and as band leader of Fania "Ponte Duro", "Coro Miyare" and especially "En rbita" (what a horn section!). I think if a regular Sigmasounder as Eric Gale collaborated with Fania also it's possible Bobby Eli also collaborated (?). Peace (Salsa) & Soul Food |

Good Morning All, It is a little chilly like willie here this am. Mannnnnnnn! Kdubya - I started this thread with one thing in mind - and it has gone a little off course. And I don't mind that because it is still a fun thread and forum to me. Listening surely is in the "Ear" of the beholder. You don't appreciate Kenny G.. Yet - I do. I love the way he plays his Sax. And the fact that he has sold over 70 million records doesn't hurt his value either. See - to some - he is a top notch instumentalist. And initially that is what this thread was about. Some that remember some of the threads I started way back - remember that I've at times asked - "Name your all time fave" this or that. I know it is hard to pick just one at times - but sometimes I feel strongly in my heart about who is my fave this or that - he - she or them. I ususally know straight off whom or what it is - or they are. Other times - I have to think about it. For instance - once I started a thread - "Name Your All time Fave song." I picked "We're A Winner." Others picked just one - but most picked several. I said then - that I understood and respected folks that didn't have just One fave. Yet - the topic is about - One Fave Musician. Again - I love Kenny G. I love the way he blows his instrument - and I most def could live with just him and me on that island - and w/him blowing his sax just for me. We all know that there are different strokes for different folks. That is what makes the world go round. So - if I want to bring him up in a thread I started - I shall. And we know that it is not always about whether one likes a song. Many times it is about the talent of the person. Was Marvin Gaye great because of the hit records he had? Or was he great because of his singing? If he had never had a hit record - would that have meant he was talentless? Otherwise - it's still all good. I would also take B.B. King with me to that island if it was meant to be - but my first choice would be Larry. I love the Blues - and I also grew up listening to that genre. I could never come back here to AL - and not hear the Blues being played all ova the place - so I could live w/B.B.. See - one could also ask - out of all the different instruments that are out there - which artist is your fave drummer - trumpet player - pianoist and so on. That was not the title of this thread. But one can go for and name them if they would like to. What I meant was - outta all of the musicians out there - and if you had to choose just one of them - which one would he/she be - regardless of the type/main instrument said artist played? The thread took off - where we started naming many musicians - and that was/is kool with me. I can dig it - and love just as many of the aforementioned musicians as many others do. We know that musicians come in all shapes - genres and colors. Sheila E. is a wonderful musician for instance. And we should know that musicians are not just Jazz musicians. Therefore - they should not be heralded as the only ones that know how to play an instrument. If we were to think that a way - we'd be forgetting all of the wonderful musicians in all of the other genres of music. I love the Big Band sound too. Bands - like the Commodores - Cameo - Dapp - Roger - Dazz - and all the others that used to serve it up to the people back in the day - had/have great musicians. Funk groups - GoGo groups - Country & Western groups - etc. Within all of those type of genres - someone has to be playing the instruments. Folks are going to have their faves at times - out of those genres. Most folks don't try to get to know the musicians in groups though - they just listen to the artist singing. But we know here on Soulful Detroit - that musicians are most def artists too and should get their props. But not only the Jazz ones. We would be forgetting the Funk Brothers if we did that. So again - someone out there might like a Joe Messina - for an example. Just because he is not my fave musician - does not mean that he isn't someone elses. They think he has deep skills - and I respect them for it. He is great - but just not my fave - and etc. They would take him to that island. And at times - it is not so much that it a subjective thing. To me - it is about who/what turns folks on, and why they appreciate said artist - musician - song or what have you. Matter-of-fact - I would appreciate it if someone would respond to this thread - and name their fave musician - and elaborate and rave about why they feel that way. I want to hear them go on and on about their fave. I want them to explain why they would take that ONE musician with them to that deserted island where there were no others on the island - but them. I would never tell anyone whom to like or love or not. And with the purest regards in mind. http://www.kennyg.com/bio.htm (Message edited by gogogirl on October 15, 2004) (Message edited by gogogirl on October 15, 2004) |

That is just the first one. Wow! I said Wow! What a great way to wake me all the way up this morning. Talk about Smooth Listening. I Love It! Oh my God. The Look Of Love - is a playing now. Too much! Btw - Rod Stewart was on the Today Show this morning. His latest CD is one of - Standards. He is another one that has sold about 70M. |

I feel ya GoGoGirl....but Lord knows Kenny G. would serve humanity best by going back to being a sideman for Jeff Lorber. (LOL) I dug the 1st CD...especially the vocals of Lenny Williams and mah boy Ellis Burke (on "What Does It Take")...but since then he should be paying Ronnie Laws & John Klemmer a hefty portion of all his royalties. For his work since the 1st CD...Kenny G. gets 2 snaps up in ERRRGH formation. I will give him his props for the "Lullabies" project though. |

All, 1wicked - I hear you too - and respect your opinion. But - for an artist to sell 70 million records - said artist must have a following. And they would disagree with you as it pertains to in which way Kenny could best serve humanity. I would urge anyone to respect if not like what someone else appreciates - and that goes for anything. I certainly don't think that is too much to ask. One more time. There are many of us out here that love Kenny G.. And it really is just that simple. Surely - those of us that do - respect the opinions of those that don't. We know there are many artists out there that some like and others don't. We could be here all day listing them - indeed. And we could be here all day - agreeing to disgree. Needless to say - I can understand it if Kenny is not someone's cup of tea. I would just hope that those same folks could understand it if I want to drink him up. |

No disrespect for your listening choices. If you like it..I love it, as the saying goes. Perhaps it is the fact that *I* pre-date the "Smoothe Jazz" era and have a great appreciation for a musical form that was built on originality and/or taking what did exist to a different level (growth)...not simply lifting the style of someone that came before you and definitely not being locked into a formula album after album after album. I can give Kenny G props as "technician"....but the fact that he has sold 70 million albums has much to do with factors above & beyond his musicianship. (To be discussed in another thread...maybe) Again...no disrespect intended. My ears are probably a bit older and my reference points a little different. |

All, 1wicked. I got you. See the main point is - we like who we like. We dislike who we dislike. That is all I meant. I respect your take on Kenny. I like him for me - and nobody else. You say - "the fact that he sold 70M records has much to do w/factors above and beyond his musicianship." Yet - the people that bought his records were happy. They weren't looking at the technical side of what he was serving up. They just liked what they liked. Even if he copied from those that came before him - he still has talent. That talent is what others see. They could care less if I like him or you dislike him. And most of the artists out there were taught by someone. Granted - some were self taught. Many were originals and others learned from the originals. Yet - how many originals are/were out there? After one of the first artists came out w/their way of communicating - like Louis Armstrong for an example - and others liked what they heard - may haps because of it - they decided to learn how to play a trumpet. I doubt that they should have just given up - because Louis made it happen before they did. The music business would have been stuck on "no growth" if others didn't come after someone else. There would not have been a music industry per se - nor a music curriculum. Most of the artists out there came after someone else. Should they have not - just because someone else was first? To many - Kenny has his own distinctive way of playing his sax - and many love it. Should the ones that inspired Curtis - Marvin - Michael and all - should have been it? Music Apprectiation is a course taught in schools and colleges. These students must have a reference. If one didn't know where the key to a car ignition went - one would be in bad shape - for one wouldn't be driving anywhere. We all learn from others. Again - I respect your take. What I was commenting on was the fact that I didn't feel it was so funny because I love Kenny G.. I don't think it is funny that some dislike him. Lastly - different "People Make The World Go Round." You're still alright w/me 1wicked. I love reading your posts. And I certainly meant no disrespect to you. I can learn from you. We all can learn from others. Even a child can teach us something. Say GGG, look , You can love him forever. I just thought that someone's else "crack" was funny. Go back and read my post I said I have a couple of his sides and there is certainly some of his music I've purchased but he is too "whiney" no more no less. Like others here I too predate the so called smooth jazz era and indicated that although I was exposed to jazz in my early years I was dam near forty before I really understood what the music was about and I'm still learning. If I upset you, I apologize, but I certainly wasn't trying to dictate what type of music or artist you should like or listen too, not only would that be foolish but counterproductive. Look at the lists that this thread has brought about, hell most of us like everybody, I even like a cut by Michael (Gack !) Bolton ....Can I Touch You There ? I think its a great song, but if you dont like it thats fine with me. I have always maintained that music is color blind and that's as it should be because your ears are the window to the musical world. I can no more apologize for thinking something was funny to me than you can for liking Kenny G and please note that I never said I didn't like him. I would hope that we still cool, because I do respect your choices. |

MyMindGoneGirl, First off, my bad for misinterpreting your opening salvo. You said: "I also love B.B. King. I love the way Kenny G. blows his thing too." ...and for some strange and weird reason I assumed you were referring to his "sax". What clued me was when I saw your reference to being with him on a deserted island. Now I know we all like different things but it's totally inhuman for anyone to want to die a slow and tortuous death...by Kenny's sax playing. So that's when I figured you had things on your mind besides music. As for the 70 million. Maybe it's a coincidence but that's then exact number of people who say they're voting GWB this year. Hmmm...could it be the same 70 million. As the late great P.T. Barnum once said, "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American People." Now if I were on a deserted island with Mr. G, I would reach into to ocean and consume as many sea urchins as I could. If I'm gonna die painfully, let me die quickly. On the other hand, if I had to choose someone to be stranded with on a deserted island with an instrument, my choice would be Johnny blaze and his magnificent Flamethrower or Bill and his Big Ass Flare Band. ...and I'd do it all just to hurry back to mess with you some more...dear. Now i'm off to church tonight(why me lord, why now?), i'll holla later. |

All, Uh-oh - the swords are truly drawn out now I see. LOL! Chuckle - chuckle about Bush getting 70 million votes Destruction. Please confess your confusion about that whilst you are kneeling on the pew at church tonight my friend. Pity The Fools that have put Mo Money into Kennys pockets just so they could be tortured as they listen to his sorry azz sax playing. I know Ive contributed by buying two of his CDs. Poor and most misguided me. How in the world could I buy two CDs by an artist that sucks at his own thing? LOL! Surely knowing how sweet Kenny seems - he walked quietly to the bank to make those deposits all these years. He doesn't seem like the type to - "blow his own horn" as in laughing at the misguided ones that enjoy his blowing and what not. LOL about him blowing his thing. Ill have to give you that one. That was a good one. But - you know what I meant. And contrary to your belief - that man could put me to sleep anytime blowing his own horn. I stand firm in my belief that he could blow for me. And in mine eyes - and for two decades - he has taken a tall and hard stance as he served it up to the people. Id rather be stranded on a desert island w/Kenny G. more than I would want be stranded w/many others that strum - beat - or blow their own horns and things. LOL! "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" this time? All, Well then 1wicked - if Kenny G. is sooooooooo slow - and if what he is playing is not Jazz - then the truth still stands tall by itself. Call his music what you'd like. That man's azz got and is still getting paid. Hopefully - that is one of the main reasons he blowed and blows his own horn. To get paid. Just as soooooo many other artists have and still are trying to do. He still believes and knows that "The Eagle Flys On Fridays." If he is smart that is. And - I can't believe that anyone would call this man the slowest bird in the flock. "Money - Money - Money - Monnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnney." Isn't that why many of the artists are/were out there, and even the ones that visit this board - are/were trying to fly? Some birds just fly higher than others. I'd rather be an Eagle than a Hen. |
