Did anyone suspect at the time that Val took Tammi's place on some recordings? Was Val that good of an impersonator?I wonder if she could do Diana?

I was only three years old when the Marvin/Val recordings came out. But when I was older and heard WHAT YOU GAVE ME, I thought that Tammi's voice sounded different than on the earlier songs. Later I bought the EASY album, and I still thought she sounded different. Then her vocals started to remind me of someone. I couldn't figure out who.

Suddenly it dawned on me that it was Valerie. I had become a huge Ashford and Simpson fan, and I knew her vocal style. Later I read Marvin's bio, and my suspicions were confirmed.

Now when I listen to those Marvin/Val songs, I honestly don't think Valerie sounds like Tammi at all. She sings through her nose to approximate Tammi's sound, but other than that, I don't think they really sound alike.

Val is very gifted! There was a doublemint chew-
ing gum TV commercial that she did the voices
for the two WHITE girls in the actual film.
She was singing the song..."Chewing gum can be
fun when the taste is ..." and so on.
She had a very similar sound to Tammi, but I
don't think she sounds anything like Diana.

I never thought she sounded like Diana -or Tammi very much-but if she can imitate 2 white girls maybe she could imitate Diana!

I was about 11 when I bought this lp Easy, in the early 70's. I liked the lp, but like someone earlier said, there was just something "different" about Tammi's voice on this set. When I found out it was Valerie, that explained everything. She does a good impression, but still it wasn't Tammi. Tammi could sound girlish, womanish, coy, seductive, serious, depending on what the song called for.

I will have to agree with you SDF. Tammi just had a voice that once you heard it, you would know it anywhere.

Let's just put it this way. Tammi's voice can often be imitated, but a voice like that can never be duplicated.
