Hello Everyone and I hope all of you are smiling and feeling good! Concerts have changed a great deal as it used to be live bands, live vocals and 3-5 members doing choreography next to a microphone stand (Tempts, Dells, Marvelettes, etc.). Then it was still a live act but there were 10 or more members (EWF, Kool and the Gang, Lakeside, etc.) doing the same but with special effects. Now it is a group, 15 dancers, the earphone/microphone head set, a few band members, taped music, lights, fireworks - a Broadway show in the end. I'm not criticizing the new concert format as pizzazz sells tickets and people should enjoy a show! It is sad for the earlier artists who had the same pizzazz, did it live while actually singing, dancing and trying not to knock their front teeth out on a microphone. Plus, they did it for a lot less money and those who attended the concert did not have to pay an arm and a leg. All of us here at SDF know that the classic groups put on a great show. Are there any newer groups that can do the same? |

What's up Satipe!! I hate to say it, but I can't think of one. If they were still together, I would have said Tony! Toni! Tone! & Mint Condition. They were bad!! |

I can't stand the headset microphones! It takes a certain amount of style to handle a traditional microphone on stage. When an artist is good at it, it enhances the act. |

Aaaaah Ralphie, Could you possibly be thinking of the microphone tricks of James Brown, Joe Tex, Jackie Wilson & The Temptations??? |

Juice, Right on the money. Not to mention the cool way Tom Jones would hold the mic with what looked like his thumb and forefinger. |

The last show I saw was the Vote For Change tour in Cleveland and Detroit last week end. The opening act were called 'Bright Eyes'; their music was acceptable boring light-ish rock, the singer sucked like just about every singer I see under 40 or 50 these days... I really think it's a dying art which is especially sad because it is the hardest part of music to fake with technology in my opinion. I hadn't seen REM since 1989, they were pretty good. On the other hand Bruuuce and the E-Street Band and John Fogerty (on stage all too briefly) were the best live acts hands down and the best singers as well. The New Orleans funk act Galactic have had 2 excellent singers (Houseman and a female whose name escapes me), India Arie and Jocylyn Brown were hot on Nu Yorican Soul, especially on 'Runaway' which holds its own against any disco-era classic, but there really aren't many younger acts that have turned me on... then again there's Antibalas, not a gifted singer in the Levi Stubbs sense but they're a super hot, fantastic live afrobeat band who're touring. |

Not a group, but Anthony Hamilton really impressed me at his London show a month or so back. An excellent singer with some fine songs and good stage presence. Lee Fields and Sharon Jones (Daptone funk artists) put on great shows, too... |

I personally don't care what kind of mikes they're using....as long as they are singing LIVE into them. I paid for live...I expect to see live. Now I'm not gonna pull an Elton and say those who lip sync at live shows should be shot (not that he's wrong...lol) but.... If you can't do it live...don't FAKE it live. Do something else...or keep your ass home. |

Newer groups that are good live? Here's some you might want to check out: Alicia Keys Me'Shell Ndegeocello India Arie Soulive and a group here in Chicago called Liquid Soul is great fun live. They might be broken up now, but I'm not sure. |

Thanks for the list Chi D! I knew that there had to be some quality artists out here. I'm not one who believes that there are no longer good performers. They're just getting harder to find. Thanks for the reminder! |
