October 2nd and 3rd marked the 14th anniversary of the "Jazz at Drew" Cultural Series...which benefits the King-Drew Medical Center. Saturday's events were headlined by Oscar Brown, Jr., The ChiLites, Bobby Womack, and the incomparable Jerry "The IceMan" Butler. Oscar Brown, Jr. did a relatively short, but lively set...and showed that he's lost nothing over the years. He was followed by The ChiLites...and they rocked the place. Marshall & the guys sang all of their hits + a few covers and it became one massive sing-a-long because EVERYBODY loved some ChiLites & knew every lyric. Bobby Womack was next up & (aside from "Daylight" and "Across 110th Street") smoothed everybody out before getting 'em ready for church Sunday morning with a little Sam Cooke. His catalog is much too massive to sing ALL of the crowd favorites...but he tried not to miss many. As good as Bobby Womack is, the highlight of his set was Ms. Altrina Grayson. This lady has some serious pipes !! Based on the ooohs & aaahs I heard...few were believing the voice coming from that beautiful lady. Then..."The Ice Man" !! Song after song...hit after hit...sounding as good today as he sounded when he recorded them. With brother Billy on guitar and sister Madelyn doing background vocals...Jazz at Drew got Cooled Out in a smoothe but spectacular fashion. People were grooving...swaying & just chilling when Jerry introduced his special guest...the beautiful Ms. Brenda Lee Eager (also a background vocalist), sharing a stage together for the 1st time in 10 years. The crowd went wild as they broke into "Ain't Understanding Mellow"...and they responded with some Classic Soul that was incredible. This set was the ultimate. If The Ice Man comes to your town...don't miss him. | ||

1wicked, I wish that I could have been at that show! The pictures of the ChiLites are awesome. I'm glad that Jerry and Brenda Lee Eager performed together, they were such a dynamic duo. Jerry is still his same smooth self, he is truly the "Iceman". Bobby Womack, what can I say about Bobby, his soulful and prolific lyrics make me get chills. Did he sing, "If You Think You're Lonely Now"? If you took pictures of Bobby, please post them  . Thanks | ||

Great pics. Oscar Brown Jr is one cool dude. I searched 5 years for a copy of his Lone Ranger cut, though I won't play it for the girls. I also loved the piece he did on Def Poetry Jam in its inagural season. I could talk about Jerry Butler for 10 minutes and never use the words "cool" or "ice", but I couldn't go 2 minutes without saying "smoooooth". | ||
