That is a great subject that many people needed to be enlightened about but take a look at how it used to be. When i was developing a website for Joe Liggins i came across this story that totally threw me for a loop.

You will do well to read the entire story

Yes, doowopsvoice, I have read this piece some time ago, and in the Salsoul thread I "hinted" at how the lack of organization of artists and musicians might've led to them being financially abused as they were... In this case, they had a union local chief in Chicago, and still couldn't quite get their stuff together... Why is that??? Because everyone was off on their own trip, that's why...(smile!)

In every industry in the world workers have to organize to get their situation straight, and stop the exploitation... Artists, particularly musical artists, have historically had difficulty in this area, of organizing ONE powerful international union to stop the exploitation... As individuals, yes, we are limited in what we can do, but as a unified group, we are powerful enough to make the most obstinate of people think twice about attempts to exploit and cheat... Thanks for bringing this fresh perspective, Doowopsvoice...

Peace!

isaiah,
Sorry to take so long getting back to this but i thought your thread should have stirred alot of people in this industry to action of some sort.

It just so happens that i started a Royalties Reasearch company about 3 years ago and i have heard some horrendus stories. One lady has lived for nearly 30 years in a 2 bedroom apt. in a less than desirable area, here in L. A., was always behind in her bills, and was always fighting with the record companies to try to get paid for a song she wrote. After she signed with us she received a decent check 000,000.00 for the first time in her life and is getting paid fairly, now. She had always tried to get her money without competent assistance, but that will not ever work. The lady wrote "This Christmas", Donny Hathaway did not.

I included this link because it demonstrates how, at one time, there were no royalties paid to anyone.

Sadly, i think that your idea for an international union would not work because it would go the way of every other union. Guess who controls them all.

doowopsvoice,

The link that you provided was previously provided on the thread, How The Music Industry Screws Artists - Industry Practices Revealed.

Forum member Juice, has provided links to various articles in a semi-chronological order. I am still reading the links that he has provided, and the situation ain't nice:-(. The music companies are now even more creative in holding back monies owed to artists. If you get a chance check out the links provided on that thread.
