I remember this well. However, I was not a fan
of hers. I couldn't stand the sound of her
voice (and her appearance didn't do much either).
However, I was very saddened to learn that as
much as she wanted to be a star, she was never
able to enjoy any of her success because of her
addiction. Musically, I hated her version of
"Piece Of My Heart", which, of course, was done
after Erma Franklin's version (the original) on
Shout label.

Drugs really messed up so many people in the music business. I really did like her version of Piece Of My Heart (reached # 12), but that's probably because I hadn't heard Erma Franklin's version first (reached #62). Usually I can't stand re-makes, but that's an exception. My favorite by her was the live version of Down On Me in July of '72 (only reached #91). Much better than the August of '68 version with Big Brother & The Holding Company (reached #43)(in my humble opinion anyway). Does anyone out there know who did the art work on the wild Cheap Thrills album cover?

That would be underground comics icon Robert Crumb who did the "Cheap Thrills" cover.

Like Randy Russi, I never could stand the sound of Janis' voice: more screetchy than soulful.

Lighten up guys. I thought Janis was great, and I love to hear covers of great songs. It's always fun to get an artist's personal take on a good songs. How many great versions of "heard it on the Grapevine" are there?

1970 was a bad year. :-( (Jimi Sept18th and Janis less than a month later) Which brings up this question. Does anyone on SDF remembers a movie entitled "Beyond the Doors"? It came out in the eighties. The movie was about Jimi,Janis and Jim Morrison. They were suppose to the be the 3 most dangerous people in the music biz, during the 60's.

Any thought?

Hey, she may not had the greatest voice in the world but she had soul in her own way from the heart. I got to give her credit for coming out so strongly in that she had the guts to preform in respect to her idol Etta James before any white female artists projected in any kind of soulful way on stage. Oh, there were a few exceptions voice-wise but Janis followed her heart in a world that wasn't ready for her kind of "out-there-ness". Just my humble opinion, while on the scene in the 60's I don't recall too many being that bold. She had a rough life but stayed true to her heart & soul, a true free spirit. Let her rest in peace now.

I wasn't a fan of her music, but when I remember her I recall this gutsy lady who gave everything she had on stage. She seemed to put body and soul into the performances I viewed on TV.

Her voice didn't appeal to me, but as a non singer myself ( too embarrassed to sing in the bath, even ), I really admired her strength.

RIP Janis.
