Medussa...Where were the Ruffin and Wilson funerals held? I beleive that Jackie's funeral was second only to Edsel Ford's in terms of size and number of mourners in Detroit history.

Jackie Wilson: After a well publicized funeral attended by around 1,500 relatives, friends and fans he was buried in an unmarked grave in his home city of Detroit.

David Ruffin's funeral was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 1991, amidst huge crowds of mourners at New Bethel Baptist Church, during which members of The Temptations sung "My Girl" en masse. Following the services, David was laid to rest at Woodlawn cemetary in Detroit.

Okay, now I remember. I tried to pay my respects to Mr. Ruffin during the public viewing over at Swanson's, but the line was sooooo long I couldn't get in.

Raymond...Do you know which cemetery Jackie Wilson is buried in? Is his grave still unmarked? If it is, that seems like a real travesty.

Hi Gary;
Jackie now has a beautiful big headstone that's inscribed with the words
"The Consumate Entertainer" or words to that effect, as well as the inscription
"No More Lonely Teardrops".

Hello to Bluerhythmbass:
James Jamerson was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetary in Detroit, and not at LA National Cemetary. I was present at his services and not only that, But James Jamerson is one of my family members. Anthony(Ant)McKnight

I have always found the folks at Woodlawn to be extremely heplful and they have never withheld the location of anyone's grave. You were most unlucky. E-mail me when you are ready to return to Detroit and I will give you the plot number.

David Ruffin's grave is only a short walk (50 metres) at "11 o'clock", behind the offices.

Anyone flying into Detroit can visit Jackie's grave after leaving the airport. It is literally minutes away in Westlawn Cemetery on Michigan Avenue.

Also in Westlawn, and buried within 50 metres of Jackie, is Nolan Strong.

Anthony,
Thanks for the correction - I pulled the info straight from the "Findagrave" website - they even have a plot number for James too...(Plot: Section 12, Row 8, Grave 5) I wonder where that info came from that they used?

Colleagues,
I just contacted the web owner of "Findagrave" and he pointed out that James's headstone has his birthdate as 1939 but in printed piece from his funeral, it has 1938...can anyone verify his real year of birth?

The end page in the SITSOM book credits his birth date as January 29 1936.

My mother confirms over and over, that the date on my birth certificate is not the date I was born. I argued that perhaps she was in too much pain. She yells and says "I know when you were born, I had you." :-)

I have forgotten the actual year of Jamerson's birth year, but I'm sure Anthony can probably confirm the date.
