Does anyone know the exact date when Cholly Atkins began to do the choreography for the Temptations? Did he do the choreography for all or most of the songs after that date? Or was the choreography always a compilation of Cholly and Tempt input? I guess these are questions that should have been asked when Cholly was alive. I suspect, like most of life, that the choreography was a combination of Cholly, Tempts and whoever else was around.

I know he started teachingmost of the groups in early 1965, when the Motown School started. However, I think he was at Motown in 1964, and I'd bet he was working with the Temptations before the school was started. I'd guess, atleas, mid 1964.

Sharon Davis' Motown the History says Cholly became a freelance coach in the Fifties and was signed by Motown as a staff choreographer in 1965.

I've always been told that, prior to Cholly Atkins' arrival, Paul Williams designed most of the Temptations' stage routines. I thought it was Paul who choreographed the steps for early classics like "My Girl", "It's Growiung", "The Way You Do...", etc.

And Gary, I personally thought their early routines were GREAT!!I think bringing Cholly aboard took some of the pressure off the groups themselves.

Cholly originally worked for the Miracles, designing steps for the record Shop Around, he worked with the Temptations and Four Tops and Supremes later on. Paul did most of the early choreography for the Tempts. There are some great photos on Ron Tyson's website...www.rontyson.com
