I was checking out a site & found a story about the R&B pioneers, The Drifters. I found the story to be pretty interesting & I learned a few things: http://www.chuckthewriter.com/ drifters.html |

Juice, I love the Drifters, thanks for that link. Reading about Rudy Lewis's death gave me cause to pause...I too had always heard that he died of a drug overdose...this binge eating thing is news to me!! He was as skinny as a rail!! But then that's what binge eaters do right? They induce vomiting....just sounds a bit strange that a man back then would be binge-eating!! |

Hey Juice; From everything I heard and knew of the Drifter's through the years, this is the real true story. Thanks for the link, it even brought back some memories of live performances, and a off-chance encounter when I accidently ran into Charlie Thomas one day in '73, lol. S.S. |

Great link there, Juice. Thanks for sharing it! Interesting to know that Clyde McPhatter's son is touring with one of the current Drifters acts. Seems he passed his talent on down to the next generation, which isn't a bad thing at all. Best, Mark |

Juice, What a great link! I did not know that Rudy Lewis sang with Clara Ward, now I understand why I would see him in my neighborhood. I met Rudy through my cousin when I was about 8 years old. He was a skinny guy with a lot of charisma, and was very friendly. He would hang out at the billiard parlor near the Dell theater. I made the mistake of telling my uncle that my cousin introduced me to Rudy and my uncle punished her, boy was she angry with me. |

Thanks everyone, I'm glad that you liked the link. My parents had ALL of The Drifters LPs in the early 60s. I was about 4 when Rudy Lewis died & believe it or not, the story that went around then was that while walking down the street, he had a seizure & fell through those doors that lead to the cellar & broke his neck. For years, their LP covers scared me (Along with the 10" of Johnny Ace), because those LPs had pictures of dead people on them. Scared me out of my mind!!! Later I heard that it was a drug overdose. Now, this information comes up. I wonder just which is true. If this is true, I'll feel a bit better, as it removes the drug stigma from his name. I can believe that it wasn't drugs. I remember when Linda Jones died, they said that it was an overdose, because they found a syringe on her person. For years, we all though this to be the case & I was so surprised to hear about her passing. Finally, years later, it turned out that she had the syringe because she was a diabetic. While I was still sad that she died, I felt better to know that the stigma of being a junkie was removed from her name. I guess sometimes, it's best to wait for the autopsy report, huh?? |

The Drifters were my favorite group until the Classic Temptations came alone. However, the Classics never took the place of the Drifters with me. If I had to listen to the recordings of one of those two groups all day tomorrow. It would be the "back in the day" Drifters. |
