From what I've read of the tracks on Motown Boards it's hotter than hot!

All this AND I've booked to see the group in Hemsby, England at the end of October.

It's Velvelettes heaven.

I hope that this will be released in the U.S. I'm not overly familiar with all of their songs & I'd like to see if their music is as good as I've heard that it is.

I'm impressed looking over the track list already. I knew there had to be more songs left someplace. I wasn't quite taken with their best of disc. But hey, this anthology should cinch it. I'm glad their was more material in the vaults that'll sustain their loyal fans. I'm just glad something has come of this. What is odd to me is The Velvelettes' "There He Goes" being included? Can someone here help me out here on it's inclusion.

Wow! This is great! Six cuts I've never heard! I don't buy commercial CDs, but I'll get this one!

Don, apparantly Mickey Stevenson was allowed to "place" "There He Goes" and "That's The Reason Why" with IPG as leased recordings. Therefore, they remained Motown's property (especially as IPG doesn't exist anymore). I only hope the Version of "That's The Reason Why" on the CD is NOT the IPG version, but the alternate Motown version (which I think is much better). It'll be interesting to hear those French cuts.

It would b great if they had when the Velvelettes beat the Supremes at Greystone/Battle of the Bands. Per a Velletette, Miss Ross went in the bathroom and was kicking the door and screaming because the Supremes lost!

"It would b great if they had when the Velvelettes beat the Supremes at Greystone/Battle of the Bands"

The Velvelettes' appearance that night was recorded - and they're included on the CD.
As far as I know Diana's post-concert performance
wasn't recorded - but you never know what's
in those deep, deep Motown vaults :-)

UK release date is pencilled in for November 1st.

The CD can be pre-ordered from some on-line stores. The only one I've checked is
www.amazon.co.uk

They have it listed at 10.99 (a real bargain)
plus postage.

Great to see the interest this has generated -
the Velvelettes deserve it.
I'll keep you posted on future similar UK releases
when I have definite release dates.

Robb - Yes it is the OTHER version of Thats The Reason Why.....and Ron, JimmyMack, Davie et al, the girls will really appreciate your support.

The CD comprises EVERYTHING as far as studio recordings is concerned. What I tried to do was to include everything but use alternative mixes/versions where songs had been previously issued on CD. Effectively, I wanted this CD to appeal to the staunch Motown and SD fans who had to have everything - but they at least got something different to what they already had - it also had to appeal to those that wanted the great singles as well but in a form which would be acceptable by being not too far removed from what they knew.

There is the "Baby Love" version of "He Was Really Saying Something", a completely new version with a different vocal. "Lonely Lonely Girl Am I" has the same band track but a different lead vocal....I could go on. The engineer who mastered the CD loved "Bird In The Hand" that now has a tambourine and handclap beat running through it.

Northern Soul fans need to go straight to "A Love So Deep Inside" and "He's The One". Vocalist lovers ought to go to Cal's outstanding rendition of the Supremes "Your Heart Belongs To Me". Cal's favourite song is "Bring Back The Sunshine" - a song that was the forerunner to "Dark Side Of The World", the song that Diana Ross released as the flip side to her debut solo single.

Can I mention that where alternative versions exist of some tracks (eg there were many lead vocals for Honey Love) Cal Street chose the one to be included personally, so I have the blessing of the group on this project. In fact, Cal and Bertha provided most of the pictures, which date back over the whole career of the group. Cal wrote the sleeve notes too.

The "Battle" concert is the first one to be released. Who knows, if the reaction is good, then we might even get to hear the Supremes contributions when they did "Lovelight" and "Run Run Run". Do note the similarity of "Aint That Good News" - which precedes the later recorded version from the Supremes..and also note that on this song, Cal retreated to the background and allowed Betty (subsequently to become a Vandella) to take over the lead singing.

The French language tracks are cute. Cal majored in French at school and one day, Berry Gordy overheard her talking to someone in French. He decided to record her and Little Stevie Wonder with a guy named Pierre Berjot. Stevie did "Castles In The Sand". Norma recalls that day vividly. By the way, Betty Kelley (note Cal's spelling of her name) was on the French recordings but Millie was not.

And I nearly forgot what must be one of the most important aspects for SD fans (particularly David Meikle). On the back of the cd, there is a picture of tbe Velvelettes outside the Twenty Grand with their name in the marquee (spelt wrong unfortunately but at least it was up there for all to see).

I did try to think of everybody when I put this together. Time will tell whether I did it right but I know in my heart, I did my best.

Well, so the battle of the groups (Velvelettes v. Supremes) is on the CD after all, huh. This is not to put down the The Supremes or nothing I'm glad they we're the superstars they became, but The Supremes could never really sing, though they could carry a tune. Out of all the Motown's girl groups we're in my opinion and others agreed where The Velvelettes. They we're so good, some members done bkgrd seesion with The Andantes. I wish The Vel's CD we're leased over here abroad, if not, oh well.

Tell Ms. Cal i met her and a couple of the girls along with Martha, Mickey, Kim, Clearence Paul (I think all together or at different times) Joe Hunter, Beans Bowles and Maurice King, at a friends apartment in Chicago in the mid/late 60's
Tell me Ms. Cal she doesn't need convincing. I think she's just overwhelmed that her and the girls are getting the reconition after all these yrs, is all.

Thanks John

hey John: I didn't know that you put this together, man what a great job. a friend of mine was doing an oldies radio program out of Flint,Michigan by the name of Max Oates, and one of the girls called the show and from that he told them why not get back together and they did.

as I have stated before on this forum the Velvelettes were the best Motown female group the terms of vocal talent, I'm very glad they are now getting some respect.

Good to see they put pic of orignial Velvelettes and not the often used pic of Cal, Anette, and Sandra. They have been so underrated--their whoops and harmonies are fantastic. Why Bird in the Hand didnt go to #1 is beyond me. And to think they are all still together!!Wish Betty could appear with them sometime!(I was listening to their first CD the other day and Cal's voice often sounds like Martha's to me with some Brenda thrown in!) Sylvia Rhone should re-sign them and Brenda!!Screw ageism.

My opinion on the group is they are the 60s Destinys Child they have the SHARP vocals, material, attitude, style and phrasing (with Cals funky vocal touches) : a sublime combination. Ive been a follower since the age of 12, and got to meet them on their first UK tour in 87 when I was 14. I was gobsmacked to chat with them and likewise I think them that I knew who they were !! Since then I have wondered what their unreleased material is like. John Lester deserves respect for pioneering the group and this CD - Im with him on the appreciation front ! I hope that the CD gets acknowledged as the musical/ Motown gold dust it is !!!!! A long time overdue and great that its release coincides with their big UK appearance.

By the way a question for John / the girls was I Know His Name recorded as a part of the session of Heatwave ? it sounds as though the session continued jamming and the Velvelettes joined in !??? one of the backing vocals at the top end Oooh oohh etc!! sounds like Martha and the Vandellas in the mix as well. Is this the case ??? the two tracks seem to be cut from the same cloth and this song (H-D-H produced also) could almost be Heatwave Part 2. Assuming that Betty Kelley must have sung with the Vandellas at a point prior to her joining the group as well ??

Although family commitments mean I cant be there for the Motown Legends weekend, is there a scheduled time for the group performing so I might catch their appearance ?

If they get to read this - they are much loved and recognised as being one of the finest soul acts then and now and I hope they enjoy their time over here in the UK.
And do they have any other appearances scheduled ? somewhere a bit further north maybe ??? I look forward to hearing the CD.

Well Marc

I am so pleased when I find a fellow Velvelettes fan - especially one so young!!

I Know His Name was assigned to Kim Weston in 1962...before the Velvelettes joined Motown. The girls (with Betty) added their vocals later. Harry Weinger mixed the track in 1999 from the sessions tapes as there was no final mix.

Many of those 1963 songs have a Heatwave feel to them...and when you hear "You Can't Get Away" on the new 2CD album, then you will notice yet another clone!

I am on the look out for another venue but I am looking south at present. If you know somewhere north, do let me know.

John

Thanks for your reply and info on the track mix, sadly like all of us I'm not that young anymore! although my passion for Motown and Northern Soul is undiminishing and gets stonger as my CD collection increases, which is anticipating some new and well received additions soon no doubt.

'Heatwave' was a pivotal track by all accounts it seemed to change the face of R&B/ Doowop into a formula that became known as Soul and therefore any soundalikes are no bad thing ! I'll certainly look forward to catching all the tracks mentioned on the Double CD.

As for venues in the north well I'm North East based and can't really say but would welcome if anyone else could make suggestions !? Motown acts tend to play the theatres here, I've been to PAs in bars and clubs as well but this might be better recommended by others in the NE Soul fraternity - many of whom I'm sure will be going to Gt Yarmouth - who knows I might make it myself yet...

Thanks again
