http://www.iketurner.com/

You know, ever since I saw that movie back in the early 90's I've heard only 2 kinds of stories from the men who saw that movie, the one that's been edited for "political correctness", and the one men REALLY think about when discussing the relationship of Ike and Tina Turner...

The story most cats I've spoken to came away from that movie with was, yes, it was wrong that Ike beat Tina's booty so often, and so brutally, but why didn't she give up the brother's name after she got the divorce??? Yes, she did come to fame with that name, but the name belongs to a man who violated her with such controlled brutality that it seems it would only be fitting to give up that name, and forever relinquish any memory that she was married to the man...

Fact is, Ike Turner MADE Tina Turner the world renowned person she is today... Despite all of the terrible things this man apparently wreaked upon her, there's little doubt in my mind that she would be nowhere today without him. That is one of the ironies of this very interesting story of both their lives... And why she refused to give up that name, I think...(smile!) What'chall think???(smile!)

Peace!
isaiah

I think Ike Turner has got to be one of the most under-appreciated and most under-recognized people in the history of R&B. He was there at Sun Records with Sam Phillips from the very beginning, so his pedigree as a pioneer should be unquestioned.

His violent tendencies towards Tina not withstanding, I still admire Ike a lot. I've heard him interviewed a few times and he is very candid about his relationships with women, his past drug and alcohol abuse and his musical contributions. He's got some great stories and he also has some very keen insights on the current state of the music industry. This cat is no joke.

On point, Gary... A lot of what this man did in this industry gets obscured by his relationship with his former wife... He was in the business, and doing great things long before he met her, and as I said, where would she be without his talent, guidance, and show biz wisdom??? He's the man who gave her her whole stage personna, and he should be given proper recognition for that...

Peace!

Isaiah from what I understand, it was purely for business reasons. She was already established in the business by that name as it was a household word and it was the only thing she wanted from him the ability to keep her stage name. I guess she didn't want to have to perform under Anna Mae Bullock "formerly known as Tina Turner" or the like. Just my take.

As a kid and young adult, everytime I met Ike & Tina they were nothing but wonderful to me.Ike even sent me a letter one time to come to a gig...it was when "Proud Mary" was a big hit, thousands of people and when I went backstage he gave me a big hug in front of all these "important" looking people...it made me feel like a million dollars. So the part in the movie where Ike went off at that young fan just was not true.

Tina Turner was her professional name. When you've worked for years becoming a "name" enter-
tainer you don't change that. She credits Ike
with giving her her start in the business.
She has never denied his business sense, his
musicianship, etc. I don't think he gave her
her whole stage personna as she had a lot to
do with that. She said she always wanted to
have long hair, always liked to sing and dance.
The Ike & Tina Turner Revue was FANTASTIC!!!
I saw them several times. Sometimes he came
up with some good stuff for Tina to record,
but some of it wasn't that great. She was
basically selling the song by screaming so
much. That's why she liked working with
Phil Spector. He didn't want her to scream
and holler so much, but to really cut lose
and sing. I read Ike's book, too.
Ike was very talented, but I think his biggest
downfall was drugs. He also seemed to have
a problem with women. Wasn't Tina his 7th(!!!!)
wife?
Again, their show was the best. Check out
their performance in "The Big TNT Show" movie
from late '65 or early '66. In about a 10-15
minute set they are really smokin'! Who would
want to follow them.

Oh, and Isaiah, that quote was an Ike & Tina 45 "Anything You Wasn't Born With(You Can Do Without)" I loved all their rowdy records that came out on small R & B labels. I never understood why Ike didn't keep the show going with the band & the Ikettes. Although I think there are still some conections somewhat with Tina behind the scenes as far as money but I could be wrong.

On of my favorite Ike Turner tunes is a funky instrumental called "Gettin' Nasty". Ike plays some funky piano on this track. It's been sampled by various rap groups, but it's a nice track. For those of you in Chicago, (KDub,Don,ChiDrummer, etc;)
I'll be playing this track on my show in 2 weeks.(Oct 14th)
(if you're unable to catch the show, you know how to email me,and we'll take it from there.)

The other week, Vonnie started the thread about the origins of Rock & Roll & Elvis' place. No less an authority than one Sam Phillips credited "Rocket '88" by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats, back in 1951 on Chess. Many forget that the group who recorded the song was actually Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm. Jackie was the Saxophonist/Singer of the group. The record was credited to him, as it the song was originally his idea.

SOOOOOOOOOOO........upon further analysis & the fact that this song was considered by many to be the "FIRST ROCK & ROLL RECORD", it would appear that one Ike Turner is the one responsible the whole Rock & ROll revolution.

However, just as The Fatback Band doesn't receive credit for being the First Rap record, Neither does Jackie & Ike. I can understand it where Fatback is concerned. It only went to #26 & Rappers Delight ripped off the most popular R&B song of that year, in Chic's "Good Times" & totally blew up. However, Rocket '88 was a #1 R&B hit for 5 weeks & charted for 4 1/2 months.

Perhaps considering that one Alan Freed co-opted the term "Rock & Roll" for the R&B that he was playing (and receiving payola for), maybe Ike wasn't the face or image that he wanted. Ike was not as sophisticated, or smooth as Freed's beloved Harvey Fuqua & The Moonglows. Anyway, how Freed received credit for introducing the phrase "Rock & Roll" into the musical lexicon is beyond me. Hell, everyone knows that the term "Rock & Roll" was a euphemism for sex. Remember, "Roll Mr Jelly"???

So, if for nothing else, Ike deserves some very late props for his role as regards Rock & Roll. Move over Elvis & Little Richard, there's a new sheriff in town. He might just have a unique way of "persuading" you.

"Richard, you better play dat piana right....YOU hear me Richard!!! And take off that mascara, too!!! WOOOOOOO, my A**!"

Oops, I have to say that he schooled Tina very well as regards being a complete professional when it comes to performing. I think that he also schooled her in the art of trying to get the job done right while recording. He seemed to be obssessed with getting the sound right. If all accounts are true, I disapprove of his methods of getting the performance that he wanted. However, there's simply no way to separate the performer that Tina IS, from Ike Turner. Ike Turner will always be a part of her performances, no matter how much she distances herself from him. He simply was too dominant & helped to mold her during her formative years as an entertainer.

Like it or not, a part of Ike will always be within Tina as an entertainer. I think that the way he treated her sucked & if that limo scene is accurate, I only wondered what took her so long? It was kinda like when Celie decided to show Mister ten new ways to use a straight razor. I felt great to see these formewr punching bags, FINALLY show some backbone & stand up to their tormentors/oppressors!

Hey, I never cared much for weak sisters. I like women who stand up for themselves, even if they need a Louisville Slugger to make their point :-)

As far as Tina changing her name, why should she, they had children together. I think that a lot of women who have been previously married and have children, do not change their last names.

Was it St Anselm who said "Love the sinner, hate the sin"? I subscribe to the opposite when it comes to art- not just music, but other art I like- a la 'Love the art, be ready to hate the artist'. Unfortunately if I only checked art made by nice people I'd have to give up a lot of peoples' works I love. For instance I thought Picasso was given to putting cigarettes out in some girlfriend's skin, Brian Jones f#cked up his hand pounding his girlfriend's face, notorious wimp Frank Sinatra managed to toss a woman out a window, Ike Turner beat the sh#t out of Tina... I have to separate the scumbag from their music. I bet sports fans have the same dillema.
By the way, I question the, ahem, business sense, of a man who decides to record 20 albums for as many labels in 2 years, providing his own stiffest competition...

Isaiah and company:
I interviewed Ike Turner for the Tuff City Music Group last year as well as Ikettes founder Robbie Montgomery when the label reissued Ike's "Black Man's Soul" album on CD.

Ike is very stand-offish when it comes to interviews and for good reason - many journalists approach him only when it has to do with what happened between him and Tina outside of the recording studio. Also, he is a VERY busy man - Ike is always rehearsing, recording or touring. Yet he did take the time to answer many of my questions.

Here's just a bit of what I learned about Ike:

Ike had a recording set-up in the living room of his home in St. Louis and later in Los Angeles. He cut many singles within his own home as well as professional recording studios.

He also had a series of record labels - Sonja, Innis and Sony - that he ran from Los Angeles. Ike gave up on the labels only because he didn't have the time to spend doing the behind the scenes work in promotion and marketing.

In 1970 Ike opened Bolic Sound Studios and was given access to many instruments that were "ahead of their time" such as the "funk box", the predecessor to the drum machine.

Thanks to the success of Rocket 88, Ike became a talent scout for Sun Records. He stayed with the label until he moved to St. Louis.

Ike recorded Fontella Bass years before she moved to Chicago and cut "Rescue Me".

Billy Preston was one of Ike's studio musicians in the mid 1960s. Ike was also tight with TV producer Jack Good, who created the pop music show "Shindig!" (Tina was a frequent guest). It was on the set of "Shindig" that he & Tina met the Rolling Stones and Phil Spector.

Ike Turner- So Misunderstood? What?

Please, I beg of you, give me a break.

Ike Turner was a jerk and he's reaping what he's sown.

All of this, "He gave her the name...he beat her but....BUT my ASS!! He was wrong, period. You don't treat a dog the way he treated her!! He tried to break her, and it didn't work. As Vonnie stated, why should she have given up that last name? That's sooo weak......

Today she can "still" sell out Wembley Stadium.

I do recall reading where he sold out "Duke's Joint in "where-the-hell-is-that", Kansas, which seats roughly 70 people!!

Karma?? Hell Yes!! That washed-up-and-out sum-of-a-bitch!

Who the hell cares what that loser is doing today? I even saw where that "creep" wrote a book. Did he call it "I beat, Tina?" who read it? I'll bet my left eye-ball that he's still bitter!

Beating women is just the most hideous, low down thing that a "man?" can do to a woman, it's awful and I have NOOOOO sympathy for any creep who does that to anyone! Once a beater, you know the rest.

Women beaters are right up there with pedophiles and crack-addicts- they're almost "un-rehabilitatable"(if such a word exsists!)

Anyone who does have sympathy or think he's "so misunderstood" you just go and work in a shelter for abused women and children! See the handiwork these cowards do on women and children, mentally and physically. Tina had a spirit in her that helped to rise above his evil-ass mentality, and succeed, when he wanted her to fail.

I don't want to get in too deep on this subject, but having seen it up close and personal, it's a helluva cowardly thing for a (I really hesitate to use this word) "man" to do, I don't care how much he has "made" a woman's career. He dosen't "own" her. Slavery has been oulawed in America for some time now.

I sometimes marvel at the out-and-out sexism on this website (the Kobe Bryant thread- he was congratulated! for "getting off") and how many women co-sign it by agreeing with this garbage or saying nothing about it, perhaps they're afraid of going against the majority, falling out of favor with...(fill in the blank)? Sad........

Hopefully, that low-life has learned something from this.
DOUBT IT!
Not as long as he still has cheerleaders in his corner.

It's fine if you want to say Ike is a genius as a musician...some of you though have crossed into "Ike was misunderstood" land so you're no longer talking about the "music".

And Erik T.- I feel what you're saying. I'm well aware that pedophiles and what-nots exsist in all areas of the arts.

Dosen't make him (or them) less of a jerk-has-been-loser in my eyes.

Morgan, giving up the name has zero to do with owning anyone, it has to do with principle, principle, principle... It has do, absolutely, with being your OWN PERSON... If being your OWN PERSON, and standing on your OWN NAME is about somebody else owning ya...well...(smile!)

...and it is just the attitude and perspective you've expressed on the man that led me to title the thread in the way that I did... I am clear, and wholeheartedly agree with you, that assaulting ANYONE(not just women and children)is deplorable and despicable, but the man did some great music, and was responsible in every way for Tina Turner's career, and that should be acknowledged whether we agree with his domestic behavior or not...

I wasn't talking about his abusive behavior, but you're saying I should shun him for it, and I disagree... Everyone has skeltons in their closets, including Tina Turner, whom I have absolutely no respect for after she made comments to the effect that she was "...coming here when y'all were swingin' in trees." referring to South Africans who implored her not to perform in Sun City during the height of the boycott against South Africa... They don't make movies about that kind of behavior, and I doubt sista put that in her book... I'm sure it wouldn't a sold like it did... Frankly, I don't buy the music of either of them these days, but if we're gonna acknowledge Tina without Ike's influence on her career, then we're engaging in some the docotring of history, no???

Peace!
Isaiah

There's that "but" in your sentence.. "he beat her and it's despicable..BUT!

That last-name thing? Strictly IMO a "man thang"! Who cares about a damn last name? Me and millions of other women marry, take on our husbands last name, have kids, get divorced, and keep the last name. Out of convience, spite, choice, whatever. It was my choice to take it, I can sure choose to keep it.

Ike did make some great music, fine I'll give you that. I can separate his music from him and acknowledge that he's a superb musician. My uncles loved Ike and I heard quite a bit of his music as I was growing up. I don't care for nor do I think highly of anyone who engages in physical abuse. Maybe I do sound harsh and unforgiving, as I stated, I've worked in these shelter so my opinion is biased.

I am not saying that you or anyone else should shun his music, where did I say that? I'm expressing how I feel, just as you and the other pollsters did. (Maybe my woman statement implied that, oh, well.)

You can like who you like, I see a ton of folks still like that pedophile R. Kelly. I defy anyone though to still "like" these men and actually buy their music if it were your sister/daughter/mother who were victims of their acts.

I think that the Sun City admission in her book would not have made that big of a deal...her story lies in the fact that she overcame that controlling-dope-fiend named Ike Turner, didn't look back (as so many victims of abuse do) and created this glorious career that she enjoys today.

Morgan, is this one of those "my way or the highway" type a posts?(smile!)

Yes, he did do some great music(you admit that in your post as well!), and you are, in effect, implying that I should shun his music when you focus ALL of your attention on his relationship with Tina...

Fact of the matter is the man was making good music before he ever met Tina, and that is my point... All of the hollering loud of men abusing women aint nothing but preaching to the choir... It is also an attempt to shout me down, and I aint gone have that... That is why I started the thread in the first place... Because White America said Malcolm X was a hate monger, does that mean I don't discuss him, Morgan??? That is the same tactic you are using here, and I aint with it...

"That last-name thing? Strictly IMO a "man thang"! Who cares about a damn last name? Me and millions of other women marry, take on our husbands last name, have kids, get divorced, and keep the last name. Out of convience, spite, choice, whatever. It was my choice to take it, I can sure choose to keep it."

This statement is interesting, and that's putting it nicely(smile!) You saying she's keeping that name outta convienece??? Really??? Come, come now(smile!) Tina Turner aint "millions" of women, and the name means millions to her, and that's why in hell she maintains the name... I will concede that this is a good reason, and anyone in their right mind would do same...

"Ike did make some great music, fine I'll give you that. I can separate his music from him and acknowledge that he's a superb musician. No, Morgan, you cannot separate his music from his domestic life, and this paragraph absolutely proves that... I don't hold that against you, if you don't hold my views against me(smile!)

"I am not saying that you or anyone else should shun his music, where did I say that? I'm expressing how I feel, just as you and the other pollsters did. (Maybe my woman statement implied that, oh, well.)"

You are implying with 99% of your post that we should not even dare discuss this man at this website(smile!) I think that would include his music???

"You can like who you like, I see a ton of folks still like that pedophile R. Kelly. I defy anyone though to still "like" these men and actually buy their music if it were your sister/daughter/mother who were victims of their acts."

Morgan, I think there might be an entertainer or two who's music you've purchased over the years who might make you rethink that statement - honestly...

"I think that the Sun City admission in her book would not have made that big of a deal...her story lies in the fact that she overcame that controlling-dope-fiend named Ike Turner, didn't look back (as so many victims of abuse do) and created this glorious career that she enjoys today."

Yeah, Morgan, and I think that is a major problem that such an ignorant statement followed up by the equally damaging actions of performing in front of an audience which will not allow folk who look like yourself in the joint, makes no difference, don't you??? It is all about Tina overcoming Ike, and the hell with millions living under Apartheid - as long as Tina the individual triumphs over the odds... What a heartwarming story!!!(smile!)

Peace!

If I ever bought any entertainer's music AFTER learning about him molesting children or him doing a number on a woman like Ike did to Tina, then it hadn't been made public (as their behavior has) and I of course, didn't know about it.

I ain't saying one way or the other why she chose to keep that last name, I don't know, do you?? As a woman, who took on the last name of a man and we had children who also have the same last name, it was convient for ME and less confusion for the children. At the time that she left that woman-beater, did she (DID HE!)have millions?? Was she rolling in dough? Hell no. She struggled like most women after divorce do, her sucess came years after leaving that scum-bag. Again, why are you so hung up on the last name? This must be a personal issue that you have....(smile)

The name of this thread that you started is titled "Ike Turner-So Misunderstood". You yourself don't mention "his music" in the original post! You brought up the fact that he made Tina, the beatings, the last NAME, how men really feel about it,etc..you yourself brought these issues up, now everyone is to just focus on his music and how Ike's music was/is misunderstood? WHAT?? Which one is it, is HE misunderstood, or his music(?) You need to clarify that....

As for my making "ignorant statements", in one of your posts you spoke about people having skeletons in their closets, I'm sure (If this story you tell is even true!) that Miss Turner would chalk that up as being a skeleton in her closet. Maybe this was during the time when she left Ike, she didn't have a ton of money, maybe she had to feed and clothe and house their children. I'm speculating of course..

You can discuss Ike (Hitman) Turner and his life and times till the cows come home, you stated that I (Big bad Morgan) did not even want you all discussing his music. Not True!! Read your own opening to this thread and how you harped on and on about TINA! No music mentioned.

Luv ya Isaiah

And her story IS heartwarming!

I dont care what you go through in life, it still isn't a reason to mistreat your own wife and subject your children to foolishness....but you know what....my grandmother always say "you live what you learned".....she aint lying about that!

...and after all of what Tina has accomplished, I've never heard her mention anything about her children...are they still around?
She's done shows, interviews, she remarried, but where are her children...I'm sure they're adults now, but whatever happend to them?
