Hello there, I saw 3D shows in last April. They were fabulous, they sang a new song as well.

Weldon...What nice pictures you have! Have you ever come to Japan? That must be Tokyo Int. Airport. BTW Valerie's tape-recorder seems to be heavy. She didn't have a Walkman...

HereIAm...You seem to be very happy! Although I don't know Helen's 70s project(I wanna hear in detail too), but I heard that Sheila F. never joined the Royalettes. Certainly it was said that Sheila had been once a member of Royalettes on some articles such as CD liner-notes, even TDOINC bulletin. But it was Sheila "Ross" of Royalettes, NOT "Ferguson".

Hello again soulful friends!

Hey, Mr. Weldon!
Very nice photos. The Three Degrees was and also are today from the most beatiful and sexy of all the Soul womans.
From i saw the cover photo of "Take Good Care Of Yourself" (and the back-cover photo also!) i was fallin in love with this girls. Also my favorite Three degrees tune, "Long Lost Lover" is full of sexy vocals.

The album i got with the title "Take Good Care Of Yourself" is published in the UK and I knows have other editions with the title "With Love". I supouse the original US edition should to be this last title.

Best Regards and "Take Good Care", friend!
Peace & Soul Food

Hi Weldon...Oh, You gave us the Japanese a Philly Sound lecture, thank you! I wish I could have taken your lecture, but I was a low teen-ager. So glad to hear you love Japan.

Manny...The album "Take Good Care Of Yourself" in the UK & "With Love" in the other Euro-Countries was entitled "International" in Japan. The Japanese edition was different from the others. 3D sang four Non-English songs(French, Spanish and 2 Japanese) and one Japanese-writers' song on the album. Though it was suitable for the album title in Japan, I wonder why they entitled the same in the US.

Treble...One of 3D fans taught me a new song-title is "Shake Your Groove Thing" originally Peaches & Herb. They had two shows a night. The whole songs were,

1st show ; Shake Your Groove Thing / Giving Up, Giving In / Take Good Care Of Yourself / Nigai Namida / Woman In Love / Dirty Ol' Man / Diva Medley / When Will I See You Again(English & Japanese) / Dance Little Sister.

2nd show ; Shake Your Groove Thing / Giving Up, Giving In / Year Of Decision / Nigai Namida / Woman In Love / Dirty Ol' Man / Philly Medley / When Will I See You Again(English & Japanese) / Dance Little Sister.

Treble...Yes, I really enjoyed their shows. Every time they give me a lot of joy and cheer.

The lead on "Shake Your Groove Thing" ...This time I was too busy to see fully. I was able to see only twice. I think they took a lead in turn to each...probably.

Thanks for your info, Katsu!

I see one time at one second-hand music store a japanesse edition of the PIR Lp "Three Degrees Live" with the sleeve in transparent plastic!

Also I remember (as i have told in a old thread in the old forum), 3 D performed live at Escala in Barcelona. I see at TV (was in 1977) and sang in spanish "Somos Novios" appart from their PIR classics.

Manny...Yes, It was "Somos Novios" that 3D recorded in Spanish on the albums "International" & "Live In Japan". I like it, 'cause three girls take a lead to each.

HereIAm...There might be the key. I've found a website below. Check the section "R : Royalettes & Sheila Ferguson" (and also "T : Three Degrees"!). I cannot make it out...do they sell the picture? high-priced! You may be able to buy the pictures but I think this copyright limited, Be safe!

I always asssumed the THREE DEGRES were from Philadelphia. I've been told they're from Boston. Could someone who knows answer the question as to where these lovely ladies are from? favorite song for me is YEAR OF DECISION....cos When will I see you again is already such a known classic....the first time I ever heard the word BAAAAD used was when I opened up the LP and my friend Lolli D exclaimed...wow! that's baaaad!...you know the fold out album with 'Dirty Ole man' ( the gals(?) at THE OTHER SIDE in BOSTON would seriously get down to all the uptempo 3 degrees stuff and I feel they should really be credited with being the earliest DISCO STARS ..That IDOL show last nite gave DONNA SUMMER all the credit. Seacrest wasn't born back then I'm guessing. I realize he's reading a script. But whoever wrote the script is clueless I'll gather.oy

Hi Labrenda....i agree with you.."dirty ol' man" is one of the first disco records..but at that time it was known as the Phillysound, uptempo beat music with a fine orchestra...MFSB, and The Three Degrees are a group from Philadelphia..one of the singers Valerie Holiday is from Boston. And i once saw in a article that Valerie went to school with Donna Summer.
the Degrees did backing vocals for MFSB, listen to songs such as TSOP the theme from the Soul Train show and the beautiful " LOVE IS THE MESSAGE"
In 1992 the Degrees did the vocals in Japan for a project called "Soul symphony " they did a new version called "SOULTRAIN 2001" and 2 other new songs.
KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING...see you all!

Hi again, soulful folks!

Hi, Here I Am,

Very good pick with the queens of Philly sound jointly with the king of Miami sound!
Totally agree with you about the need of a CD box with all the history of The 3 D (the years in Swan, Roulette, Neptune, PIR, CBS, Ariola,...). Specially in the PIR years when i think that if possibly haved some songs similars to "Long Lost Lover" by now unissueds...!!

hi there,
why not make a dvd from concerts ? i think there are enough buyers for it. it's always the same. people have to die before something is brought out. see 'barry white'... dvd of a concert in germany, with 'love unlimited', is in the stores.
and what i hope the most is that we could listen to a new cd in the future. it's possible, with the right promotion around it.
girls, come on !!!

HI GINO...AND FRIENDS...yes it's true, we're not spoiled with THREE DEGREES releases....there are plenty of compilations ...the re-recorded songs are released on so many different labels....but why not releasing all the original albums on CD...even the Japanese ones! in 82-83 they recorded the " Album of love " partly in PHILLY and LONDON...there are beautiful songs on it...one of the highlights is "DEAR GOD" written by Elton John...and there is also their magnificent " Live in the UK" from 84, both released on their own THREE D label....it would be good to see those on cd too!
let's try to see that something happens.....we can try...enjoy your day HERE_i_am ( another beautiful degrees song!)three degrees84

The only problem is that most of the last pics of the Three Degrees posted here don't show my looooooove, Sheila Ferguson..... My heart has been on fire since the first time I saw her on a pic!
So to bring the balance back, I will post a photo of her by herself...!

Yes DegreeOfLove thanks for the pics!
As for vinyls onto CD, it is just because they can prove handy, because you can't play those vinyls in the car... that's all...
At home... nuthin' BUT vinyl...

I saw Sheila Ferguson last night in London. She's playing the part of "Fuzzy" In "Thoroughly Modern Millie"

I have to say that she looks and sounds great.Shame about the musical though. IMO Sheila was the only memorable part of it.

For all fans wishing to catch a glimpse of her in action, the theatre is The Shaftesbury, in Shaftesbury Avenue. Better go quick though, as the house was less than full and I don't know how long it will run.

the degrees sang in the FRENCH CONNECTION 1 a song by J WEBB called " everybody gets to go to the moon" a song that they peformed many times during their concerts....they did also the soundtrack for " DIAMONDS" songs by R BUDD, this was released on the BRADLEY RECORDS LABEL, and is now released as a cd on CASTLE RECORDS,with two bonus versions....and i also think that in the seventies there were a few 45 singles released....later Sheila wrote the theme for the movie " the golden lady".....bye again

Another concert, another year: Belgium - 1998. touring with 'the Supremes' (flos) and 'Sister Sledge'. I remember that night very well. We've had a lot of fun. That night we were together with fans from the Netherlands. After the show, we took some beautiful pictures with all the ladies. What a night and I thank God who makes it possible that we can see, hear and enjoy the group.

Hi here_I_am and all the rest
I knew Marijke quiet well in the fanclub-days.We talked a lot on the phone and met severel times.
I used to live in Assen then, but after a detour of a couple of years in the US, ended up in Amsterdam.Hope she is doing well, send her my love if she can figure out who I am.
Unfortunately my computer at home is not in the best of states, so I am doing most things from my bussiness.I have a lot of pictures stored in my email programm at home and will try to get some to this site. But believe me, I'm not a computer expert, so I cannot make any promises.
Through ebay I got a hold on a dvd of the girls.
I don't know where it was taped, but the seller lives in New York.It seems to be taped in some kind of discotheque and they are wearing the same suits as on the 10th picture above this message.
It's taken from 3 or 4 videocamera positions.
Clearly an amateur recording, with the sound being a little unprofessional taped and the colours too much grey.
But very well worth it !
They sang 'dance little sister' 'take good care' 'dirty ol man' 'wwisya' and 2 or 3 more songs from other artists which I forgot at the moment.
So if anyone is intrested, check out ebay
And thanks everyone for the pictures
Especially the old ones, brings back great memories
Hear ya all

Hi Guys
Well here I am in good old London for the bank holiday weekend, which is going ok.
Went up to the Shaftsburry on Saturday day time to catch Sheila before her 3pm matanee, had a little chat, she is good and enjoying being in Millie as "Muzzy" and the show is booked up till January 2005.
Sheila went to the doctors last week as she thought she had an stomach ulser, but the tests came back clear, so it must have been just stress.

Anyhoo guyz off to have a lazy Sunday afternoon/evening as I have been clubbing two nights in a row, and its not good getting in when the sun is coming up!! and just before I go a dj reord producer friend of mine is planning to do a completely clubbed up stonking version of "The Runner" with our girls, it was supose to happen this year for august time but because they are committed to "The Best Disco Tour" they have not enough time to do it so now we are looking at 2005 when they will have more time for the project.

Catch ya laters.
Regards

I remember seeing Sheila on an episode of the British sitcom, "Desmond's" back in the late '80s. She played the oldest son's girlfriend.

hi guys.....my favourite all time THREE DEGREES song is "IF AND WHEN" and to choose a stage song is very difficult, there are so many...hearing Valerie singing "MAKE IT EASY" and " DEAR GOD" are beautiful memories that i will never forget...or Helen singing " GEE BABY" in '89, the right song at the right moment, if you all know what i mean!Every Degree, from Fayette...Cindy ...and of course Sheila...they all have their "SONG" that makes it all magig.....Thankyou THREE DEGREES for all the magical moments we had and still have....your forever friend JP.

Hi all
Favourite live song; definately MacArthurs Park (fayette, valerie, sheila)

Other toppers on record;
In love we grow
Diamonds
I didn't know
I do take you
If and when
giving up (the whole 3D album)
Together
Toast of love
(too many to mention)

Not so likable;
Do it (yuk)
Bodycheck
the whole christmass album (bores me to tears, bad recording quality)

But actually I should check at home all the material I have to make a definite decision. But this list pretty much indicates my favourite 3 degrees sound. And luckily there is a lot to choose from.

Hear ya all

I like the "Live In The UK" album cause Sheila, Helen, Valerie all did their own thing vocally on that album. It wasn't all about Sheila, all about Helen, all about Valerie. They all shared leads almost. Sheila sounded good on Every Breath, Val sounded good on Maniac...Helen sounded good on What A Feeling..THere harmony was tight on Sweet Dreams and She works hard for the money...

Hi HereIAm..."Earth, Wind & Fire Medley" including Fantasy, Let's Groove, September, Boogie Wonderland and so on, was done 1999-2001 in Japan. I cannot write down the whole song-titles on this medley. I am ignorant of EW&F songs, sorry. Does anyone know all the song-titles on "EW&F Medley"?

On and after 2002 the medley changed into "Diva", sometimes "Philly" one. I hope you will be able to enjoy "Diva Medley". It's great.

HALLO KATSU...Can you remember what songs are included in "DIVA" medley....in the early 90' the girls included pre Philly songs, when they were touring with the Temptations they did "MAYBE" and "GEE BABY, I'M SORRY" .
One's hoping that in the future they will include some songs from that time! what do you think of " MISTY BLUE" and "MELTING POT"....i love those songs......how about that?

Hi HereIAm...I can show you "Diva Medley" in detail. The songs are

It's Raining Men(The Weather Girls) / Lady Marmalade(Labelle) / Don't Ask My Neighbors(The Emotions) / I'm Outta Love(Anastacia) / Respect(Aretha Franklin) / Step By Step(Whitney Houston) / Ain't No Mountain High Enough(Diana Ross) / Step By Step-Reprise

"Maybe" was sang in Japan 89(line-up with Victoria), but in that year only. Long-time fans were so pleased to hear Valerie's soulful vocal. "Gee Baby, I'm Sorry" was also done several times in the early 90s, I think Helen's sweet vocal suits this song.

"Through Misty Eyes"(You mean this one right? "Misty Blue"...Sheila's solo single...) and "Melting Pot", both numbers are pure and beautiful, I love those too! I wanna hear the Roulette songs also on stage.

By the way, was the single "Melting Pot" put on the US market? I thought the Roulette debut single had been "Maybe". Few years ago I got the single "Melting Pot" which catalogue number is younger than "Maybe"'s.

Wow, and I thought I had a very extensive collection of their recordings.
Are any of the mentioned medleys anywhere recorded and for sale?
I only have the beatle's medley on their Live in the UK album. Great Album, especially when Sheila belts out her bit in the WWISYA/every breath you take song.
Was their Album of Love newly recorded or just another compilation of old songs?
if it is new I think I will be able to find it sometime on ebay.
If the girls are aware of this site existing and this thread is so lively, would'nt it be great if they join in the conversation?
Hear you all

Hi Harry...As far as I know, any of those medleys have not been recorded for sale. The pity of it!
Given vocal arrangements, each medley was getting better year after year.

"Album Of Love" was recorded for promotion. It contains all new studio recordings :
A Sonnet To Love, I Only Have Eyes For You, Macarthur Park, Fame Medley(Fame / Dirty Ol' Man / My Simple Heart / Year Of Decision / Take Good Care Of Yourself / When Will I See You Again / Fame-Reprise), Only Those In Love, Dear God, Hard To Say I'm Sorry
It is worth looking for, I hope you will find it.

As HereIAm mentioned above, the medley on "Live In The UK" is "Rock 'n' Roll Meley",
not "Beatles Medley".
I saw "Beatles Medley" once, but it was done by the Richard's group. I want to see it done by Our Degrees madly!

The roulette years must be my #1 favorite cd.
the voices, the music, the pictures.
Songs like trade winds, shades of green, lowdown,I do take you
The whole atmosphere on the cd is unbeatable
I heard or read somewhere that Valerie has part of the rights to this music.
I allways wondered who owned all the music rights of the 100's of songs they recorded.
Anybody got any idear

lets face it...every era of the Girls' career has had its highlights and lowlights recording wise...but its the live performances that have never failed to deliver. As far back as i can go...and i believe thats alot further than most of you here...the live shows have always moved me, as a kid and as an adult. I remember watching their 1975 Albert Hall show in total awe, surprised to see versions of Rufus' "Once You Get Started" and even Streisand's "Sam, You Made The Pants Too Long"! We have had The Doobie Brothers "Words and Music", Elkie Brooks' "Dont Cry Out Loud" Cheryl Lynn's "Star Love" and even Nanci Wilson's "Dont Talk, Sing". It has been proved time and time again that these ladies can sing any song...always have, always will...i've been around over 30 years and have never been disappointed! Ladies, never stop doing what you are doing...I for one appreciate everything you have ever done. No gossip here, just total love and dedication!xxxx

oh yeah...Harry..to answer your question...Val helped compile the Roulette CD..i also had a part in choosing the tracks with a friend of mine. Val also supplied to cover pic which is from around 1967/1968...not even a Roulette picture but a great piece of Degree history from the Metromedia years! As for music rights, they usually stay with the Writers or the Record Company...hope that answers your question!

wow, what i read above is really new for me. what a pitty for those who never heard the ladies sing the songs where jayjay speaks about. i can imagine that all over the world a lot of the music they made in the past stays in the closet.
another thing is that i don't understand why the ladies always do the same show in belgium. we sure would like to hear their diva medley or earth wind & fire medley or other songs. it's a hint to surprise us all. i'm excited to know what they do in the uk or in other countries.
keep it alive guys. by the way, are here girls too ?

hi guys..let's talk a while about the Three Degrees Japanese produced records, what do you all think about their "TOAST OF LOVE " album, recorded and produced in Japan with Japanese musicians ...i think that they were ahead ot their time, don't forget this was '76....only two songs were released in Europe...the beautiful ballad "TOAST OF LOVE" and the up-tempo song "DO IT( use your mind) both co-written by Sheila Ferguson.
i adore this recording

First...Every year 3D comes here with their own American musicians. They perform by carrying out song selection which is rich in change. The Three Degrees and The Three Degrees Band are always in harmony.
Sometimes 3D performs with Japanese musicians at the particular club. The songs there have not changed yet. It may not be so easy to change the songs when the band is not their own.

Hello HereIAm...Yes let's talk about the "Toast Of Love" album released in Japan 76.
Although I can't imagine how many Western people have this album, it was recorded here Nov.-Dec.75 and required 380 hours a total for the recording. The album has an Oriental flavor(feel it a little China-like rather than Japanese for me) and my favorite songs on that are "Toast Of Love" & "From Souvenirs To Souvenirs". The singles "Toast Of Love" & "Do It" were released here by dividing into two, "Do It" sold more in sales(It was used for a whiskey CM song).

The album has also an African flavor, "The Promise" & "Ipi-n-tombia" are from the African
musical "Ipi Tombi". Those songs are included on the South African edition "The Three Degrees Live" album, but the base vocal tracks on it obviously from the "Toast Of Love" album.

HI KATSU and THREE DEGREES friends....yes you are right, the album "TOAST OF LOVE" has influences of the Asian and African music styles....my favourite song is "TOAST OF LOVE?THE PROMISE and STOP IN NEVADA" , it was not very difficult to find the album over here in '76 as the best importshops had this album.
But you surprise me by saying that a few songs are included on the South African release of " the THREE DEGREES LIVE....i had no clue about that...thanks for all the info , it is much apreciated...

Hi
Toast of love and Stop in Nevada are also my favorites
the whole album is very good, I only keep not understanding why people like a song like DO IT.
Noisy,sqreeking, yuk

Also.I understood that richard has the name rights for the US. Does that mean that there are 3 strange girls touring around there pretending to be the 3D and singing their songs. seems pretty weird.
I know the real 3D perform as Valerie,Helen+Cynthia, formerly known as the Three Degrees.

And since Billy Paul won in court milions of royalties for Singing (not writing) his songs 1000's of times all those years, wouln't it be time for Val to hire a lawyer?

greetings
Harry

ah yeah...the "Toast of Love" album...a classic in its time and even now...I was always grateful to Val for sending me a copy...saved me a fortune in shipping costs! hehehe! I always found it a very "up and down" album...up with tracks like the Title tune(totally underestimated then chart-wise)and Billy Joel's "Stop in Nevada",great vocal by Val and even better when she did it live, then really down with stuff like "Do It" and "I Wanna Say "...nice harmonies but those lyrics..please..i am surprised Sheila even wanted to take writing credits for that one! Fayette's vocal on "Souvenirs..." proves her ability as a lead vocalist..shame she never got to do more like that then. On the whole, its a classic piece of mid-70s rock and soul...it could still get worldwide release and sell in my opinion today.

Treble Clef..in response to your question..thats alot to remember! Of course Faye was greatly missed but we never forgot her and she's still a great friend! Helen came and once she settled in it was business as usual..different to before but still magical...how could it be anything else, Val was still there! Once Sheila left, she and Helen held it together beautifully which wasnt easy given the verbal batterings they got in the press from various sources. Being the ladies that they are, they kept a dignified silence for a very long time! Once Cynthia got going, its been cool ever since...I for one count my blessings that they still keep it going...not many people who can still go and see a group like this after 30yrs! x

I have talked with Valerie about this thread before. She would like for us to know that they who are in the group now read our messages and apppreciate our interest, and prefer that the talk is about their shows or music.

Treble...It would be nice if we talk only of their shows or music, neither gossip nor their
private lives. I think this new thread is very nice now.

JayJay...I agree. We're so lucky and blessed to have been able to go and see them for such a long time!

i must say i agree...lets face it, its the music and the shows that bring us all together...its easy to gossip, not so easy to refrain from it! Whats done is done and nothing can be changed..lets enjoy this for what it is eh, a nice place to chat about the Artistry and Charm that has entranced us all for many years...I think that that is the appropraite way to continue here.

Hi
Sorry guys, but I must say I don't agree........lets face this opinion.
We all know these ladies are beautifull songbirds with a long career and outstanding performance.
Highs and lows they had in various periods of their careers. With ofcourse their highest from '75-'78 and their comeback with the 3Dimension-album period.
They made absolutely beautifull music, but also some dragons.
Live performances are unspoken. Breathtaken!!
But to only have this thread to dwell over that is useless.
In what I read here in this thread we have all been fans for quiet some time, so the admiration won't get any lesser.
But just to keep this up to oooooooh's and aaaaaaah's, you are so wonderfull, is out of my kitchen.

I've been a fan since they hit the hitlists in 1974 and got their first #1 hit with Dirty Ol'Man overhere,
That is 30 years ago, so I know how good they sing and perform by now and donnot need constanr reminder of that.(though it's very nice to hear what you guys prefer or don't prefer)
Like every fan of a group you get interested about their lives, thoughts and what happened at some occasion, certainly after 30 years.

So I do want to know why they left the philly label, who wrote what and where the rights are right now, why they split with Barret, why faye or sheila left, the relationships, who represents them now, some of the individual thoughts, the whole story without getting down and dirty.

Even negative things can enlighten a long time fan.
The music we know and adore, sometimes you crave the story behind it.

If you go to the websites you only find sweet promotalk.

Sorry, not enough.

They have been a large part of my life, since the tender period of pubirty.....at 43 years of age I am not going o dwell on a website just to dwell over how wonderfull they are.
WE ALL KNOW THAT !

I chalenge Valerie to comment.

Have fun
Harry

Hi you guy(s), I got what you're meaning. It's indeed nice to show what we prefer or don't prefer. Let me make a remark once again. We have to keep in mind that an internet forum is in public, not an individual private letter or an authorized biography. We should avoid the subject which makes them unpleasant or wounds the persons concerned whom we are discussing about. I think such a subject should be discussed close and directly between interested people. Good sense is expected and moderate communication is desired.

Once they join this thread in the situation which exists anything, not a few question that they wouldn't like to answer will come out. In fact, Valerie once said to me "Sometimes they only want to gossip about things I feel they don't need to know, or be concerned about. It is good when different countries are brought together by music." As long as she thinks like this, let's respect her intention, shall we? Thank you.

heres your answer Nosey;

1967-1976; Fayette, Valerie and Sheila
1976-1986; Valerie, Sheila and Helen
1986-1987; Valerie, Helen and Vera Brown
1987-1988; Valerie, Helen and Rhia Harris
1988-1989; Valerie, Helen and Victoria Wallace
1990-NOW ; Valerie, Helen and Cynthia.

Before the original Classic line-up, Fayette sang with a number of other people like Shirley Porter, The late Linda Turner and the late Janet Jones. Of course, Helen sang with the Group around 1966 until she left to get married and was replaced by Sheila, who had been singing with the Girls on some of their Swan recordings anyway! Valerie joined in 1967 whilst the Group was in Boston...the rest, as they say, is history! Hope that helps you out!

Hi Katsu
Thank you for your answer and your opinion.
Still I have my doubts.
Look at their website. It's all general goody-good-shoes-talk adding nothing to the interest of the die hard fans.
The best thing on the site is their concert agenda in the UK and Japan and most of all the letter and pictures of Fayette.
The rest is all blabla for commercial reasons.
Rightfully so if you are new to the 3D's. but not enough for the long time fans.
If they wish not to answer to questions about their careers, lives, etc. I will ofcourse grand them that. It's their choice.
But if you are the longest performing female group (guiness book of records), had soo many hits, are so welaclaimed for the live-performances, get real!
We just want to know more about them, in real honoust answers. Certanly after soo many years.
Answers from Valerie, Helen and/or Cynthia
It doesn't have to be down and dirty. just clear and honoust without senteces like "no we don't speak with Sheila anymore"
Just let them say why they don't and clear the air with their fans, we won't love them any less!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this site is a public place to input opinions.
But their careers are even more public.
If they donot want to respond on this ( very good SFD)site, maybe they can ask their webmaster to put an extra on their own site.
Q+A-questions and answers, but then updated once a month and honoust
We love to know and we see them too little over
here.

And Jayjay
It's no gossip.
Believe me
It's just gebneral interest in the girls,
it's bot like it is a new boy/girlbandgroup anymore

hi everybody,
i have something to say about websites of artists. some are made for commercial reasons, mostly the official sites (ofcourse! don't forget that the ladies, in the first place, do their work like everybody else and that we, the public, are the ones who give them work. no people-no music-no shows. a website is 'a tool' to promote yourself).
the unofficial websites are mostly done by those who like to share their experience, their stuff, etc. etc. etc. with people who like the same subject.
i completely agree with those who want to keep the private stuff away. i'm in business myself and so i understand it very well that you can't publish everything you like. i wouldn't like it neither.

heee...let's go on about their singing....it amazes me eveytime the way they are doing a cover of well known songs, i can hear people say! that's not their song, well guys, they always perform those songs in that typicaly THREE DEGREES style.....those harmonies are pure magic....and not many groups today can sing live as they can, live is where it all happens for them, no wonder that after so many years in showbiss, they're still going strong!
See you all later.

HALLO..TREBLE_CLEF...here you have my say about it, first of all, i was really disapointed when the Degrees left Philadelphia International...but when they released the "Standing Up For Love" album on the Epic label i was pleased, as this is a high quality album showing their vocal talents in another way!lovely ballads and a few great up-tempo songs...it was annouced early 78 in the world press that the degrees had signed with the German based Ariola label of the Berthelmanns group( known as BMG) their producer for the first project was Giorgio Moroder, a hot producer at that time...Munich was where it all happened, the EURODISCO SOUND, and as the Degrees were big in Europe and the EAST, selling out everywhere, this was the right move at the right time...and to be honnest, it was a big difference than the PIR songs, but the Ariola songs are what was happening at the that time, ok it was Eurodisco, but it made also some noise for the Degrees in the USA, many of their Ariola songs were big hits all over Europe and soul and disco hits in the USA....Set Me Free from their second Ariola album is a song that you still see on compilation cd's in the US.
I love the Ariola songs very much...they're classics and regulary on the radio on the continent....

Hello Treble, HereIAm and everyone...

The Euro-disco albums "New Dimensions" & "3D" had taken in the music which was in fashion those days. I like them. I've got refreshed after listening to those Munchen Sound songs. I still love the English writers' songs "Woman In Love" & "My Simple Heart" and the single coupling ones "Out Of Love Again" & "Hot Summer Night".

In '93, 3D came back on the Ariola(Germany) and released the album "Out Of The Past, Into The Future". The first half of the album is self-cover songs and the rest new ones. I think the re-recorded version of "Woman In Love" on that is excellent with Valerie's emotional vocal, and I like the ballad "Question Of Love".

HI EVERYONE and Katsu....yes we all liked very much their cd " Out of the Past, into the Future" a shame that this cd was not released in the UK, this is a high quality album with some very good musicians like Randy Kerber, Paul Jackson jr and Paulinho Da Costa....to name a few...There was promotion all over Europe for it and it was a clubhit in Holland and Belgium, it charted in Germany and Austria...a few months before this release the Degrees had a top 10 hit in Germany with the duet single " When Will I See You Again" which they did together with Thomas Anders , A well know German singer, worldfamous for his group Modern Talking, that guy recorded Duets with The Pointer Sisters and Dionne Warwick.
And yes the songs on the Degrees album were all great, there was a second single released " Hurry Hurry" got a lot of radio airplay, but the record didn't do a lot chartwise...but i still play that cd a lot and enjoy the shared leadvocals on it....it shows the great voices of Valerie, Helen and Cindy.

agreed...it was a great album and Val's version of "Woman In Love" proves that it should always have been her song! I always felt her voice, being more soulful than Sheila's, leant itself more to that particular tune. Sheila's voice always worked with more "Showbiz" music as its more theatrical...thats my opinion anyway! "Question of Love" stands out as the Track of the Album..stunning musical and vocal treatment - shared vocals are where its at! Thats what the Three Degrees are all about!

It only became apparent, to me anyway, when Sheila went and Val started to do her leads, that those songs should have been hers anyway! The way Val does "When Will I See You Again", as well as the prementioned "Woman In Love", proves it! Those songs have more soul, more depth and to me, more feeling with Val's interpretations. I am not taking anything away from Sheila; how could I as those songs were massive hits with her interpretations, but so many people over the years have asked me why Val wasn't given more leads in those years...so maybe I ain't the only one who thinks this! x

There's one thing that most of the people in Europe don't know, we the fans know, but during their stay with "ROULETTE RECORDS" most of the lead was done by Valerie, a very successfull time for the girls in the USA,over here they were big with their first Philadelphia International song " Dirty ol man" a number one hit on the continent, and their first golden record.

i really miss "MacArthur Park"...to me, it was the epitome of The Three Degrees; amazing vocals, tremendous dancing...pure magic..I still get goose bumps thinking about it! They did it the very first time I saw them live in 1974..it was awesome and always was the highlight of their shows...would love to watch them do that again!

Im So Excited.
I Would Die 4 U.
Dance Little Sister.
Wanna Be Startin Something.
Disco Inferno.
Im Every Woman.
The Love I Lost.
Aint No Stoppin Us Now.

And Im sure there is loads more that have been in their live shows over the years that I have thought WOW! and made me dance, jump and scream, and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

As for songs to do in the live shows now of covers I just can't think of any that I really like them to do

Out Of The Past was only ever released in Germany (and maybe a few other european countries) and Japan but never saw the light of day in the UK, it was to do with money as always when record lables are involved.

And if they had done a follow up CD to Out Of The Past, they would have had to moved in another direction (The Three Degrees Go Techno!!!!).

It was a good Cd and had some fab songs on it, it was a real shame it was not released in the UK it could have done much more than it did.

hello everyone, am back from a holiday....first of all " OUT of the Past,Into the future" was released in almost every Western European country , did make some noise for the girls , DOM was a club hit and a small hit in the German charts, the album sold reasonable well! and got TV and radio promotion.A year later this album was released in Japan, inclusive a bonus track, Dirty Ol' Man, the re-mixed version from Ian Levine, released in Europe as a cds.
Other single release was " HURRY,HURRY".
The beauty of this album is that every Degree took the lead.
What makes the Degrees so special.....it's that they're so professional, the harmonies and their personality...

There were nice photoshoots for the album, that were never used....the Degrees in Jeans, and the single cover of Hurry was truly beautiful.

Also I believe in a night club over here in the Uk they did do "I'm Thru With Him", which originaly was called "To Hell With Him", but it was decided to change the title as the powers that be said it was not right for a group like The Three Degrees to be saying 'Hell', but a comprimise was reached and they do revert back to the original title at the end of the track, and even now they still do the dance version of "When Will I See You Again, Take Good Care Of Yourself, and occasionally TSOP/My Simple Heart" as the into to their set.

hi again...I liked very much the songs the Degrees did live, from their Ichiban album" And Holding" I saw them doing a very strong version of "Tie u Up" and " Lock it up" and we may not forget Valerie's beautiful rendition of the ballad" Make it easy on Yourself" I always found the live versions much better than the studio ones.....what do you all think! ! I did not like "A Tender Lie" Sorry girls!

just to say...in my very humble opinion...that the "...and holding" album was the WORST thing ever done by the ladies! whoever mixed it should be shot..i know it was the 80s, but come on gang, it was a travesty of electronic awfulness...where are the vocals? i know a change is as good as a rest...but THAT much change...nnaaaaaaaaa! i'd like that album revocalised with Cynthia and remixed too, so it sounds like the 3 Degrees..then maybe we can talk about it again!

yeah, about the "...and holding". a couple of nice things are on it too. i love "a tender lie" very much but like jayjay said; to many electronic stuff - without depth. when the ladies performed some of these songs 'live', i coudn't believe it that this were the same songs on the album. the song "tie u up" (live, much faster, much better!) is really a good track, but definitely not the right mix on the album. yes, degrees' fans are spoiled... (hummm, not the last 10 years if we look at 'recorded' stuff - what a pitty because time goes by fast).
oh yes, i found a version of "a tender lie" sung by dolly parton (country style). nice too !

Hello Roddee...Helen has a high tone voice and Cindy has a deep one. The tracks they sing
lead on the CD are

Helen: "Together", "Take Good Care Of Yourself", "The Runner"
Cindy: "Giving Up Giving In", "Get Your Love Back"
Valerie & Helen: "Red Light"

The rest of songs are Valerie's or three all. And I also have the "Live In Japan" album.:-)

3Degrees has never done live the new songs on the "Out Of The Past..." album, such as "Hurry, Hurry" and "I'm Thru With Him" here in Japan. I wanted to have enjoyed those songs. It was interesting to see the original title of "I'm Thru With Him" was "To Hell With Him". Thanks for the info, DOL. By the way, does Erwin still assist with playing a guitar on stage in the UK?

They sang the songs from the "...And Holding!" album several times here. I like the ballad "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "Win, Place Or Show". The album "...And Holding!" was released at last after a long long blank. When I saw the cover photo for the first time, I considered what do the pink circles and the long sticks mean? On the back cover photo three pairs of shoes are left. I think the Stylistics(?) had done the same before...

I don't know the reason why Victoria Wallace left the group and to be honnest i do not need to know , all i can say is that "Cynthia Garrison" her replacement is a friendly, warm singer with a good deep voice, very profesional, and excepted by all the fans! she's now 14 years a part of the group...well known for singing her live version of " dance little sister"...
I also know that Victoria and Cynthia did the backing vocals for the Kathy Sledge album" Heart"
there are even rumours that Victoria was a while a member of Sister Sledge.

hi there....those are two difficult questions, it's all intern and we can only guess...i know a few things , but better keep those to myself. Helen was asked by Sheila and Richard to re-join the group, they neede a replacement for Fayette , and Sheila and Helen were friends from their school time.As for Cindy, their musical director and also producer knew her! but you can read that in her biography.
I wonder about something else! i asked that earlier..but so far no reply....the Degrees did some recordings that were never released, can anyone tell more'bout it...for BMG! Philly......and maybe before theit Philly time!

Hi!

Have you ever been to:

http://legacyrecordings.com/co ntactus

where you can suggest re-releases of LP's which have been released on Sony, Epic, Columbia etc. to the A&R department?

If you haven't, I think you should go there and suggest reussues of the original Three Degrees LP's on CD's.

I would like to see all their LP's from Philadelphia Records/Sonly/Epic re-issued on CD's. Especially "Live" from 1975 and "Live In Japan" from 1975.

However I have of course suggested all the LP's that where released on Philadelphia/Sony/Epic to re-issued on CD's.

So if you haven't been there, go there...

Hopefully we'll manage to get all the original LP's on CD's one day.

Then we just need BMG to re-issue the 1978 and 1979 albums on CD's as well...

Thanks Danny for your advice! but two of the Three Degrees originals have been released in Japan, on Sony...there is their first Philly self titled "THREE DEGREES" album and there is "INTERNATIONAL" this one with the tracks they used on the Japanese release. And on e-bay i found on a small Russian label the two Philly studio recordings, the "STANDING UP FOR LOVE" and the two BMG albums on cd...maybe they're bootlegs.

Hi here i am!

Oh yes, I'm aware of the CD's "Three Degrees" and "International" from Japan which I of course have. However I would like to see all the original albums to re-issued once for all at the same time in U.S.A or Europe.

I have seen "Stading Up For Love" and the two BMG albums on E-Bay as well and I'm quite sure they are bootlegs - eventhough they look quite good.

It would be nice if Sony (U.S.A or Europe) would take a closer look at the Three Degrees back-catalogue and release the complete back-catalogue and maybe some bonus-material as well.

The group deserves it!

hi there...the "STANDING UP FOR LOVE" album was one of my favourites....i love the ballads on this one, and the up-tempo songs where great to, especialy "people with feeling" and there was "WE'RE ALL ALONE" a hit for Rita Coolidge...but in my opinion, the degrees version, is the best i have heard....and i know that the Walker Brothers released it as a single!
Anyway, the album should have done better! i think the reason why it was not that big, is that there was a lack of promotion...but it's still a class album with fine songs and excellent vocals!

I had found the upcoming Japan tour information on the official Three Degrees Website and asked about that.
And it turns out that they are considering making their own Forum(Bulletin Board or Guestbook?). They also think that they use it to keep their friends and fans aware of where they are and maybe they need to add more.

Hi all
That's probably because the persons posting on this link, only want to dwell over this magnifisant group.
Any critisisme or doubts is in no way apreciated, according to my experiences here.
I keep collecting their material, p.e. through Ebay, and am sometimes realy surprised by the quality of their profesionalisme, but at some times am very disappointed about quality and song choices and recording sounds
Lets face it, nobody can get it all, all the time....
And the ladies have been around for such a long time, they got it right 100 times more often then wrong.
I'll stay a fan, but would like thise forum to be a little more open and not only dwooling.
I think I am going to check out their own forum and see what is happening there.
In the meantime have a lot of fun you all, I'll keep following it time and again.
Regards
Harry
