Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but the latest CD in this monumental collection has recently been released in the UK on Kent records. For those that don't know, Dave Godin is a Guru amongst UK soul fans. He was instrumental in launching the British Tamla Motown label. The CDs in this series are I believe the best compilations ever, and are essential in any soul fans collection, and despite having been a collector and fan of the music for over 35 years, they always contain tracks that I don't know. The one that does it for me on this collection is 'My Baby' by Garnet Mimms. The arrangement on this is complex and unusual, and contains an unusual tempo that is almost waltz like. I have played this track several times a day for the past week, and can't get it out of my head. Other standouts amongst the 25 tracks, a nice previously unissued cut by Lawrence and Jaibi, who were Larry Banks and his wife, and the wonderful 'I made it over' by Jimmy Robins. IF YOU NEVER BUY ANOTHER CD THIS YEAR, BUY THIS. Keith Herschell - London |

Dave was founder of the original Motown fan club, the Tamla Motown Appreciation Society, and flew out to Detroit to meet the Tamla team prior to the big promotional tour in 1965. He later opened up a record store and label, Soul City, somewhere I think in London's Soho area. I only visited once or twice but bought a lot of stuff through the mail. What days! Would be great to get Dave here on SDF. Anyone over here in the UK know him? |
