While in the attic I ran across some old photos I shot when one was still allowed to shoot film at a live concert. This first set is from a hot August day/night in Soldier Field in Chicago called the Funk Festival. Here's your notice and your ticket...

Man these concerts used to be a hoot, it took them several years to get it right and folks to come out at this venue. Its kind of strange to be at a concert and see half the stadium empty. But by the time Anheuser Busch started sponsoring the shows it picked up quite a bit.........great memories dude, I was there for several of these shows.

You know it's been so long time Chi, because I forgot about ConFunShun being there? Alot of bands actually weren't schedule to appear, I heard alot of bands just wanted to be there too.

Rick James rolled in a limosine with a harem of women. This was way before his first lp ever came out, he was rolling with P-Funk.

Do anyone recall seeing

The Horny Horns - Fred, Rick, Kush & Maceo.

The Brides (of Funkenstein)- Dawn Silva & Lynn Mabary.

GQ - had a big record at the time a rendition of Billy Steward's "Sitting In The Park".

Bootsy's Rubber Band missed their chance BIG TIME!

The Bar-Kays stole the whole show.

Parlet - I don't recall seeing the Queen of Funk Mallia Franklin, I maybe wrong?

George Clinton, Parliament, Funkadelic -
Eddie Hazel did play on that show. Anybody has Parliament Live lp? And you see a guy with the big hat..that was Eddie. I didn't see Calvin Simon, Ray Davis, Grady Thomas & Fuzzy Haskins either. I wish Glen Goins was on that show he passed away before the show hit Chicago.

The first 3 songs I remember we're
Cosmic Slop, Maggot Brain and P-Funk.

Too band Chi you don't have The Funkadelics Skull. I took my cousin along and he disappeared on me, come to find out later he was up near the stage. He told me The Funk's Skull blew some strange smelling smoke and got everyone a buzzed on contact, I don't know how true that his statement was. It was a smoldering august I ever experienced since 4 yrs ago, where it was a whopping 125-135. If it had of been chairs out on the field, I think everyone would've been stuck to them. It was 90 thousand maggots & funkateers screaming "Make My Funk The P.Funk I Wants To Get Funked Up"..."One Under A Groove"..."Think Think It Ain't Illegal Yet"!

All the kids that came along 2 decades later I'll say this..."Y'all don't know what ya missed"!!!

All P-Funk acts had sets of their own as to what I was stating earlier. Kdubya was right cause when finally they we're getting sponsership that when fans really started showing up, cause I remember it as if it we're yesterday as clear as a bell. All the acts we're extending there sets a first time ever. Plus you guys left out one act that appeared on the card, a earlier carnation of ZAPP, I think they we're calling themselfs Roger's Human Body or Roger's Madd Axe?

PS
I met up with my cousin after the show was over and by coincedence we met up with our cousins from Gary Ind, and they gave us a ride home instead of us catching the bus & el. Chi Drummer & Kdubya, don't cha know the weather had the nerve to turn frosty cool?

What's up Don?

Who says I don't have The Skull? I got the Skull and the Joint too. That's from the Aqua Boogie Tour of '79 and I'll post some scans from that show in a day or so.

Check the first photo of the band and you'll see Kush on the far left. Fred & Maceo weren't playing with George during this part of '78. Ray was there, I've got a picture of him that I didn't post. Of course Calvin, Fuzzy and Jerome were long gone by this time and Glen had died earlier in the year.

Funny thing is, while I was taking these shots, a lifelong friend of mine was with me. She was nine months pregnant and stayed there in that hot sun the whole day. She gave birth to a baby girl the very next day. That baby girl just completed a master's degree in English and is expecting her own baby soon. My, how time flies

The Horny Horns played their sets and then some and it was Fred, Rick, Kush & Maceo. They came on before Parlet. As far as The P-Funk Horns go, it was Kush, Greg Thomas, Greg Boyer and Larry Hatcher!

Oooh, Chi Drummer!!! Lately I've been thinking about a concert I went to in '79. Actually what made me think of it was the first time I saw Rick James in concert. It was the same as the one you have described. For someone whose memory is still pretty keen, I remembered Parliament/Funkadelic, Rick James, Parlet & The Brides Of Funkenstein, but I can't remember seeing anyone else. As I looked at your list and enjoyed looking at the pictures:-):-), I started to think that I'm almost certain ConFunkShun was there, Bootsy and possibly G.Q. & the Barkays!!
I wished I could have thought to bring a camera with me or kept my ticket stub!!:-):-) It was held at the Oakland, Coliseum and it was called "The Funk On The Green" concert.:-):-):-) I remember Parliament was "wild" in costume and the Mothership-LOL. Rick James had a big MJ joint on stage as a prop! I saw his brothers out near the entrance to the dressing rooms after the concert(I was there with a cousin) there were police by the entrance so that no one could sneak back there. We were in the seats, but there was a crowd of people on the grass! Man that was a long time ago, I hadn't had a chance to post about it, but you have done so, and I just wanted to add to it! I was there to see the groups, as I was not old enough to drink or smoke and knew better not to! Those are once in lifetime concerts!:-):-) Around this time their was a rumor that Rick wore a wig. I remember people standing out near that area that I mentioned above, trying to catch a peek of him, maybe coming out, so the could see up close-LOL. That was my first time seeing him and the last time was at Hayward State, Ca with Teena Marie, Cameo, The Isley Bros., and The Funk Family Affair on Memorial Day!
Not knowing that it would be the last time and that both he and Ron would be in the news in the same week! I almost did not go to this concert, but I'm glad I did.

What happen in Soliders Field was something like what happened when the first ever Woodstock, it was either a success or a bust. Cause every radio station here Chi put the word out, because I don't think really everyone knew what was taking place, but it was the hugest concert draw in Chicago!

Chi Drummer, thanx for the correction and clearing up that Ray "Stingray" Davis was there. I thought Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey was there, because I seen him play with his head piece he wore back then? So if I'm wrong or if I'm right I don't know. But if you know the Clinton situation you know there's always we're a musician change somewhere? No Chi, I'm not disagreeing nor disputing what you witnessed, cause you're on point with yours no doubt about it. Man it was so much going on that I have to admit we all got a buzz.

I use to remember what bands played first and came on after. If this site was around a few yrs ago and if you we're to post I could have given you info on what bands came on first and onwards, and bands that actually did appear on the card that we all may not remember because?

Chi, I don't know what became of my concert stub to this day. On the pic you posted the P.Funk drummer was Tyrome Lampkin, cause back in the days him and Jerome Brailey play awfully alike. But I do remember seeing Jerome play, or at least I thought I did? I heard a rummor yrs ago that Michael Henderson (his Wide Reciever lp) and Mothers Finest was going to appear. I had my trusty transition radio with me listening on every channel on AM & FM, on what was being said that who we're going to show up & who we're suppose to shown up.

Don I wish I could remember all the shows that I attended and all the artists that I saw. Soldiers Field was a vast place my friend. And no matter who they advertised it was always someone else showing up on the bill. You paid to see P-Funk and wound up with Earth Wind and Fire.....(LOL)Yeah I remember Confunkson, Ohio Players, P-Funk, Bootsy, Issac Hayes, Skyy, Brass Construction, Steve Arrington, SOS Band and a host of others at different times....Jesus as I get older they sort of run together, probably had a lot to do with being young and partying as well as the local theatres here in Chicago going dark for a period of years....seems like they would always have one last stage show before they closed their doors. I remember quite clearly in the late sixties watching the Classic Five Tempts perform at the Capitol Theatre on south Halsted street and being chased out of the theatre by the local street thugs......I think Chicago was trying to capitalize on the new funk wave that was monster money makers for our neighbors in Milwaukee. I used to make the pilgrimage to Milwaukee every year to see acts like Marvin Gaye/Temptations and the like at the Old County Stadium because they couldn't get booked in Chi-town, now wasn't that a hoot.

I'm glad y'all enjoyed the photos. There's more of other shows shot before '85 when promoters pretty much shut down unauthorized cameras at concerts. I haven't even looked at this stuff for years. I Always meant to put them in a collage or something, but never got around to it. I'm happy to share them here so from time to time I'll post some (OK, I'll make them smaller)as a series. First, some P-Funk from '79...

Cool, and while we're on the subject of P-Funk,does ANYONE remember Funkadelic had a TV commercial for the Cosmic Slop album? I only saw it one time, when I went to visit some relatives in Dayton,Ohio. Everyone think I'm crazy or I'm making this up. If anyone remembers,PLEASE step forward. Help a brotha out.(I'm not losing my mind. LOL!!!)

GEETEE H-P-K, I don't remember any TV Commercials for FUNKADELIC'S Cosmic Slop lp. Maybe your thinking about PARLIAMENT'S Up For The Down Stroke TV Commercial, where Mr.C is dressed in the same wardrobe he wore on Up For The Down Stroke lp cover, dancin' & strollin' with a boombox over his shoulder. That was my first time ever seeing a boombox before. This could had to be the spring of 74? Because I was already hearing FUNKADELIC'S Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On blasting everywhere in dah hood before.

No,no my brotha. There was a commercial for the Cosmic Slop album. This is what I vaguely remember. The group were running up and down a stair case and they were outside at a playground. They were walking close into the camera and then they showed the album cover. As a matter of fact, Ron Bykowski was in the commercial. I only saw it,when I visit my consins in Dayton. They were big Funkadelic fans back then, and I was deep into Jimi,at that time. After my visit,I became a Funkadelic fan afterwards. This was around 1973.
I never saw the commercial for the "Down Stoke" album.

By the way, whatever happened to Ron Bykowski?

The video of the "Cosmic Slop" commercial was supposed to be included as a bonus track on a cd called "Toys" , which was a collection of Funkadelic outtakes from their Westbound years.
Westbound intended to release this a couple years ago, but for some reason the release was cancelled, which is too bad; there's a small but rabid audience that would have snapped it up.

See,I know I wasn't losing my mind.:-) Thanks Don and Steve K,for confirming the info.
(It's a shame they decided to pull the plug on the CS commercial for the "Toys" CD. :-( )
Don,the show I'm doing on the 14th is a general "Dusties" show. Alot of soul, funk, some jazz/fusion,a mini spotlight of the folkes that were at the African Fest a few months ago,a tribute to Bernard Odum and Lui Satterfield.

Your friend can get a copy of the show at no cost. Bring on the surprise. I'm all for it! :-)

I was browsing SD's Connections and it always ceases to amaze me. Rhythm & Blues/Soul Artist Andre Williams of "Beacon Fat" and "Jail Bait", etc, is credited of having been linked to Funkadelic. To Mr. Williams credit for being a songwriter & producer, has never worked with P-Funk. Andre Williams name has always been mistaken for another Andre "Foxxe" Williams that once played guitar for George Clinton & PFAS.
