This morning I got an e-mail from Tom Tom MMLXXXIV informing me that trombonist Louis Satterfield passed away in his home town of Chicago this morning. He did not specify the cause of death or Mr. Satterfield's age. Louis Satterfield played bass on a number of '60s Chicago soul hits such as "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass and many others. He was also a notable trombonist and was a member of Earth, Wind & Fire for many years as well as The Phenix Horns. As more information becomes available, I will post it here. I will miss you, Lui Lui.

Hey Juice,
Was Louis Satterfield any relation to Esther Satterfield? She recorded an album with Chuck Mangione in 1975 called "Land of Make Believe."

Hi Milli,

I'll check that out for you. I think that DVDMIKE, Kdubya, Don or SDF might have a better idea. So far, I see no mention of them being related during my searches. Perhaps my Robert Pruter books can give me an answer.

Mr Satterfields bass performance on rescue me made the much discussed, "100 Greatest Rock Bass Performances" list.

He also played bass on Billy Stewarts' version of "Summertime".

One of the vocalists working with Mary Wilson is a Satterfield. I understand she's from a musical background with family in Chicago. I asked her if she was related to Esther Satterfield (I'm from Rochester where Esther's from, Chuck Mangione too).

Linda Di,
Thanks for clearing that up. Now tell me more about Mary Wilson and Esther Satterfield. I'm sure she would be a welcome addition to whatever Mary is working on because she's a very talented vocalist.

Milli -- Sorry for the confusion. Esther is not working with Mary Wilson. Esther is a vocalist who was very popular here regionally (Rochester) and worked with Chuck Mangione.

The young lady working with Mary is Damia (sp??) Satterfield. I believe she is related to Louis, but not sure.

I just heard the news of Satterfield's passing just a few minutes ago as I am listening to "In The Soul Kitchen" (radio streaming) on KUSF.ORG, so I had to do a double check here. It isin't posted on soulwalking.co.uk yet as I make this message.

Whew Lawd, this was one outstanding musician, whose personal credits will tower up into the heavens to which his mighty soul will rest... Taught Maurice the Kalimba, Kalimba sings a message to youuuuu!!! And taught Verdine the bass, so he could get busy on his own TROMBONE!!! Time to rest, brother, time to rest...(God Bless!)

Peace!

Louis Satterfield's memorial service will be held at Mercy Hospital in Chicago on Monday, October 4 at 6:00 PM. I don't remember the name of the room, you'll have to call the hospital at 312-567-2000. The address is 2525 S. Michigan Ave. I could not find out how he died, only that he suffered from various illnesses. He was 67 years old.

dvdmike:
Thanks for posting this info regarding Louis Satterfield.

When the late Roquel Billy Davis was finally able to construct a studio band for Chess Records a la the Funk Brothers, he hired Louis on bass. Louis in turn recommended drummer Maurice White, who was working as a studio musician for Vee Jay Records.

And what a hell of a band, just to name a few....
Louis Satterfield - bass (deceased)
Gerald Sims - guitar
Maurice White - drums
Leonard Caston - keyboards
Burgess Gardner, Paul Serrano - trumpet
George "Paco" Patterson - alto sax (deceased)
Charles Stepney - vibes (deceased)

Louis was also the founder of the Pharoahs, the predecessors to the Phoenix Horns.

Millie:
Esther Satterfield is a wonderful singer who is best known for her work with jazzman Chuck Mangione as my homegirl Linda Di indicated. Her style is similar to Dionne Warwick circa 1968-70.

Esther started singing with Chuck in 1971 for his "Together/Freddie's Walkin'" concert with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Two years later Esther was the featured vocalist on Chuck's live disc "Land Of Make Believe" (recorded in Canada) and made an appearance on Chuck's A&M debut album "Chase The Clouds Away" ("Land Of Make Believer" and "Together" were released prior on Mercury Records).

Esther's fine singing can be heard on the following songs -
"Soft" (from Chase The Clouds Away)
"Look To The Children" and "Freddie's Walkin" (from Together)
"Lullaby For Nancy Carol", "As Long As We're Together" (released as a single) and "Land Of Make Believe" (from Land of Make Believe).

Back in the day Louis taught my brother in law The Late great Terry Batchman how to groove that bass.Terry went on to play Bass on "Love Jones",The Brighter Side Of Darkness, "Ain't Understanding Mellow",Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager,"Leaving Me", The Independents, etc. Terry was a major part of "The Chicago Sound" through Louis. Man, Bro Louis was real Cool! R.I.P.
