4-Brothers Of Hope: "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me"
5-Brenda & The Tabulations: "California Soul"
6-Corner Boys & Friends: "Take It Easy Soul Brother"

About the artists featured in the volume two, I only knows about Three Degrees, Frank Beverly & The Butlers (they becomes the group "Maze" in the 70's) and Yellow Sunshine who recorded a same title album for Gamble and featured Roland and Karl Chambers and Dexter Wansel.
I knows that "The Family" is MFSB and "Family Affair" was previously recorded on North Bay and after in the first PIR album by MFSB. Other MFSB incarnations are Musik Makers, The "Co" of Cliff Nobles & Co, The Philly Sound and many other. Our soul brother Bobby Eli can enumerate many more!

There are two unbelievable soul CD's that really need to be made by someone. They are:

1. The Neptune Records story
2. The North Bay Records story

There was some incredible music from both of these labels just prior to Philadelphia International Records coming into existance and both labels have been completely ignored in the reissue department (with the exception of a track or two showing up occassionally on other compilations).

I wonder why none of the reissue labels in England have jumped on these catalogues?

Hey David,

Maybe they haven't been reissued because the original records are moderately easy to find. What troubles me about 'reissues' though is that all the catalogues that I've contacted have told me that they are all digitally 'remastered' even if there were nothing wrong with the master tapes. I can hear the difference and I always prefer the original formats, even with tape compression hiss and all the other hidden coloration goodies. But if the masters are lost and the original pressings are so damn rare and expensive, then there really isn't much choice but to buy reissues. Neptune and North Bay are both dope, no doubt!

I dont think that a North Bay will ever happen(legally) because one of its principals, Eddie "Broadway Eddie" Warhoftig is now deceased and no one seems to care about a best of cd, and furthermore, there are not that many songs on North Bay to make a viable product.
There have been people whom I know who have tried to talk to Eddie's family but without any success.

Hi everyone!

I've never heard of North Bay! What is the deal with North Bay? When was it in operation & who recorded for them? This is news to me!

As regards The Philadelphia Roots CD, does anyone know if there will be any comprehensive liner notes? It would be great if they gave us some rudimentary info about the artists, recording or release dates, etc. Any ideas about this?

Hello Submarine again, soulful friends!

Also, what about a possible "box-set" titled "The Story Of Gamble Records"?
But I refer specially to the 60's Gamble records. I believe in the 70's Gamble records re-apeared and only edited Intruders albums and some others as Yellow Sunshine or Cleveland Eaton. Here in Spain all the G & H products appears exclusively under the PIR logo (PIR, TSOP, Gamble, Golden Fleece). In the sixties the Gamble records catalogue was very varied: from Intruders to Jaggerz, Bob Crewe, Butlers, Musik makers,...

Some of the Neptune albums were re-realised in the PIR logo as the first Billy Paul albums or "In Philadelphia" LP by The O'Jays.

And what about Golden Fleece? I believe the only artists who recorded in this label was Trammps, Robert Upchurch and Love Commitee (I read it in any place in the web). This is true? Have more artists who recorded for this label? Golden Fleece was also a editorial and appears in some credits in Whispers and Ecstassy Passion & Pain singles.

About North Bay I ignore how different artists recorded for appart from Little Dooley, The Family, Talk Of The Town and (not sure) Bobby Marchan.

Also some music encyclopedias are unexact saying that North Bay and Golden Fleece were subsidiaries of PIR. I believe that Golden Fleece was owned, as Gold Mind, by Norman Harris.

The other two songs were on Neptune records and released as a single and were written by Gamble-Huff and Bell.

Manny,
The other North Bay artists were Exectutive Suite, Soul Devalents, and the Mello Moods.

Golden Fleece was really "owned" by PIR as a vanity label for BHY and Gold Mind was essentialy owned by Salsoul as a vanity label Sadly, both parent labels kept most of the money.

Salsoul paid for Norman's funeral and PIR for Ronnie's, as neither had any money left for such purposes.
They both either wrote them for tax purposes or more likely than not, charged them against their heirs "royalty" statements.

Hello Submarine again, soulful friends!

Hey, Mr. "Electronic",
Many thanks for your "first-hand" info.

All your explanations about the finantial problems of many studio musicians is very sad. Many time ago, when i read that Arthur Alexander was in the missery with health problems and working as a bus driver I'm feel very hungry and sad when we thinks in some talent-less folks or also in stupid capitalist speculators who don't create absolutely nothing and are multimillionaires!!! The millionarie status from the minority is, sadly, supported by the missery of the immense majoritie, including the talented creators. This is the capitalism!!

Here in Spain are a association called SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores Espaoles). I don't knows if in the US exist something like this.

Hello Everyone.

I have Volume One of this series already, so this is GREAT news for me, being a long-time Philly Fanatic ( or should that be spelt "Phanatic"? )

I know about half of these tracks and I can't wait to get hold of a copy of this C.D. so I can hear the rest.

Furthermore I will be able to "archive" a couple more of my increasingly worn-out old 45s!! Notably "What I See"/"Reflections of Yesterday" by THE THREE DEGREES on Neptune, and "Family Affair"/"Nation Time" on North Bay.

From what I remember one side of THE THREE DEGREES 45 is the instrumental version of the other side, ( wish I was at home so I could check which is which!! ). "Nation Time" by FAMILY is the instrumental version of the song that THE EBONIES did on P.I.R. ( Other side of their 45 version of "I Believe" ). And "Great Big Liar" by BUNNY SIGLER ( on Volume 1 ) is the vocal version of "Take it Easy Soul Brother" by CORNER BOYS, which itself was the "B" side of "Gang War" by THE CORNER BOYS .. ( All on Neptune Records ).

Hopefully this compilation will sell well, at least in the U.K. as it contains two tracks that reached the U.K. Top 20 ... "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" by FIRST CHOICE and "Ready or Not" by THE DELFONICS ( originally both on Philly-Groove records and hits when released on Bell in the U.K. ).

Juice, in answer to your question North-Bay was in operation roughly in the late 1971- early 1973 period and released material that a year earlier might have been on Neptune, and a year later might have been on P.I.R. The biggest selling release was probably "Family Affair" by FAMILY, although one North Bay release "I'm A Winner Now" by EXECUTIVE SUITE ( a beautiful smooth Philly ballad similar the THE STYLISTICS at their best ) was subsequently an R&B chart entrant when re-released on Babylon Records.

Hello again everyone.

Juice .. I checked out the North Bay label scan on that site and it has a design I've never seen before.

The standard North Bay label was a compass design in Green and Yellow, with the North Bay logo in turquoise at the top ( where the compass would be pointing north ). The logo seems to be the same design as on the scan in the link.

I also used to have a white label North Bay demo of "Its Got to be Now or Never" by LITTLE DOOLEY.

I wish I had the technology to upload label scans .. can someone help me out here and post some North Bay ones!!??

Roger.

Little Dooley..."It's Got To Be Now" was a steppers delight back in the day. That record got lots of airplay in Chicago and the clubs. Hey Eli, did you play on this record?
Peace,
Byron

Hi Byron Woods,

Not to derail the thread but you say that Little Dooley cut was popular in the clubs back in the day. Can you share some info about the scene in Chicago back then? The earliest thing I know about is Den One where Ron Hardy played in mid 70's. Who were the first dj's, and what were the dance venues like?

best,
Tenyu

Hello there everyone.

Back on the subject of North Bay records, I'm sure that I used to have a 45 by THE VIBRATIONS on the label.

I think that it must have been "Sneakin" .. see this link ..

Juice .. I'm sorry but I don't have any label scans to E-mail you.

At last .. A North Bay label scan.

Thank you Tenyu.

"Memories" is the "B" side of "Its Got to Be Now or Never" and got some NS interest back in the day!! I remember IAN LEVINE mentioning it in one of his columns in "Black Music" magazine sometime in 1974.
