This beutiful sunday morning as we were coming from St.Ann's church near the Ambassator bridge down Vernor st. in Detroit we passed Rose's bar. I did a double take, the roof is gone, the floor is gone and the sides and back are gone. The only thing standing is the front of the bar. We stopped and I got out and went around to the back to see what I could. Standing in the back looking toward the front, the menories came flooding back. To the right I saw the stage where I spent many a night playing drums with everyone from Babbitt to Jamie Coe and a lot of Detroits best musicians sitting in. To the left I saw the long bar with Big George tending bar and then we'd call him up to sing "Hi Yo Silver, sounding just like Jimmy Whitherspoon. I saw the dance floor crowded with sweating dancers "gettin on down". I saw the owner Ernie with his ill-fitting toupee. I saw the local burleske dancers trying to outlast me when I did a drum solo(I always won LOL). I saw the monday night band jamborees that would bring in all the bands and musicians from Detroit on their night off to sit in or just get up and jam. I looked behind me and saw the small parking lot that I would go out to on my breaks and notice that the windows in some cars were all steamed up-hmmmmm,I always wanted to go up and look in, but didn't. All this came flooding back this beautiful sunday morning when I saw an early 60's Detroit musicians landmark for the beginning of the Detroit rock sound that I'm pround to say I was part of,BEING TORN DOWN!!! I'm glad it was a nice sunny day and not overcast as that would have had me really down in the dumps. Also Big George sounded just like BIG JOE TURNER not Jimmy W. |

Lynn, There's a hell of a lot of music soaked into those walls that are no longer standing. I suppose Rose's isn't all that important to most Detroiters, but to the musicians who frequented the place it could be a monument. |

Yeh,your right,Rose's was a toilet but in the summer of 1960 there wern't a hell of a lot of bars that allowed bands to do rock& roll music. You,me and all the other musicians were the first generation of rock musicians to come out of Detroit and Rose's was our Mecca. In 1960 there was a big difference in the rock sound in America.(In my oppinion from what I heard on the road) On the east coast-Jersy shore: The rock sounded more like Louis Prima& Sam Buterra and the Witnisese(us Detroit musicians loved their sound) Down South: the bands were really bluesy and soulful.(Again us Detroit musicians loved their sound) The Detroit sound:it was a mixture of blues, rockabilly, with just a touch of jazz and a good percent of it started at Rose's bar,a run down bar on Vernor in southwest Detroit. |

I might add about the Detroit early rock sound that DRIVE was the all important thing in the Detroit early rock sound. If your band didn't have drive you weren't worth much. |

Lynn Bruce, I have seen Rose's Bar but never entered. I would, however, like to comment on your writing skills. What beautiful and organized thoughts, on paper/computer, that painted a vivid picture in my mind. What imagery! I hope you consider putting more of your experiences on paper. You could write a book, MEMORIES OF ROSE'S BAR! Arcadia PS: I hope you were able to take a "souvenir" in your final act of remembering. (Message edited by Arcadia on September 26, 2004) |

David, It was at Roses's that I would see for the first time, Dennis Coffey play. It was truly a musician's bar. |

David,I think what we had in those early 1960 days of rock in Detroit was fun playing and a lot of it!! The music was new and exciting. The musicians and bands were all out to top each other at jam sessions but just like athletes we were friends as soon as we stopped playing. We would help each other learn a new riff or show each other a new way of playing or different beat, then go out and eat together. I think what bothers me most is that Rose's has always been there although not opened----like an old pal that you don't talk to much anymore but still know is around. I always thought that someone would reopen it. After seeing it this sunday, that's not going to be.--------like our old pal just died. |

Hello everyone. Great stories of Rose's Bar. I used to play there every Monday night with Jim Fraser. Jim was cool. He sang blues, especially Jimmy Reed songs, and played harmonica. He sat in with all the bands in town. Do you guys remember Jim? |

Dennis,I still think about him. In 1966 I was playing with Babbitt at the Vertigo-West on McNichols and Jimmycame in and wailed Jimmy Reed songs like he always would. We always laughed a lot when he was around. The next night Babbitt came in and said that Jimmy had been killed on his motorcycle |

I'll never forget when I learned Jimmy had died. We had become very good friends. The day I heard the bad news I was trying to confirm it's validity. Mike Hanks stopped in at Tera Shirma and sat in my office making a few phone calls. It was true. Jimmy and his girlfriend were in an accident on his newly purchased motorcycle and he had been killed. I was devastated. Such a talented guy. I never forgot him. |

Soul Sister, six months after that picure of us at Roses bar was taken,Dave Kovarick the sax player was playing at the Wagon Wheel. I was in N.Y.playing on Merv Griffins "Prom Time" or "Dance Party" tv show with Johnny & the Hurricanes. I kept telling the Hurricanes what a good sax player the band I played with at Roses in Detroit had. Dave and I kept in touch, so I took the band over there to see what a kick-ass Detroit sax player sounded like. I kept telling the Hurricanes that he was one of the best tenor sax players in Detroit. When we walked in the Wagon wheel he was tearing the house down with "Hand Clappin" and then went into" Harlem Nocture ". The crowd went crazy!! I just turned to the guys with a big smile and said "see,I told you so". |

Hey Lynn, thanx for intoducing the kats to the people here that need to know, and love our better days gone by.7TH. GRADE? I must of been ahead of my times then, laid at 13, 7th grade by 15. Anyhow, remember some of those scary stages we had to set-up on and play on? Home-made quickie's or brought in from some rental kompany. This was us The 5ive Invictas at the dairy workers hall in 1962. One of those run away bass drum wooden floors, after this gig is when my ol man took 2wo long choker chains and hooked them to my drum throne and bass drum tensioners, this would keep my bass home with me and never had to put the fender bassman amp in front of it, or my bass player stand in front and keep his foot near it to shove it back as it started to walk. Sometimes a karpet would help, but would still slip away. Just put a new drum head on the night befor so there is no 5ive Invictas"THE COUNT" on the one in pic. "COUNT" |

Bluerythmbass,We all sang,I don't remember if Babbitt sang lead on any songs but he certainly sang harmony.Voices change after 40 years working in smokey bars plus age has a way of giving one a graveltone sound. I know my voice is a little changed from 44 years of singing, and I never smoked cigarettes. |

Lynn, I find it interesting that you mention the sound of Detroit bands versus East Coast or other areas. You definitely touched on something there. When I was in The Sunliners and we were to play the Peppermint Lounge for the first time ( As well as play NYC for the first time ) a little pre-opening night scouting of the various clubs had us totally demoralized. In fact, I remember we had a quick band meeting at the hotel where Fred said that we weren't going to be very well liked there, so we would play out our brief engagement and split. Quite the opposite happened. We blew the roof off the place and we're asked to stay on as the Show Band. What we failed to realize that all of us Detroit bands had something completely different going for us because of our roots and that golden mixture of Funk and Rock. That, put together with that incredible DRIVE you talked about. ( Have you ever heard Pete Rivera play a driving shuffle?) So we had our own sound. The Detroit Sound and it ROCKED!! |

Ralph, that's the exact same thing we had happen in Wild wood N.J..We would hear the east coast bands and then think we sounded like a garage band. Then when we would get up to play they loved us.We thought the east coast bands were cool and they would tell us that our sound was what they were trying to get. Go figuire. |
