My partner, Jon Bowen and I had a wonderful lunch meeting with Spyder Turner and his manager Dave Gausden. Motown Millie (as I call her) joined us as well. It was a meeting for the film (here comes a cheap, shameless plug) called "Point in Time" that is in pre-production. Filming to start in Detroit, MI USA next spring. Go here for more info http://www.pointintimemovie.co m The lunch was a great meeting and we hope that Spyder will play a part in the film and contribute songs. After lunch we had a real treat, as all five of us climbed into Spyder's car and listened to some new songs. One called, "Stop The Rain" sounds like a masterpiece to me. It has "HIT" written all over it. Spyder wrote it and, of course sang. Production duties were handled by a young man named Norman Whitfield (keep that name in mind, he could go a long way in the music business). Millie, Jon and I were completely knocked out by the song. The best was yet to come. Spyder played some mixes of an upcoming live CD. Tremendous material and we didn't even hear the final mix on any of the songs. Then Spyder plugged in a song that was basically a rhythm track with some instrumentation. Backing vocals and other sweetening of the sound are yet to come. Spyder then told us that his lead vocals were not recorded yet, either so he sang them live to us. And he sounded absolutely magnificent. It boarded on surreal. Imagine sitting in a parking lot of a Big Boy Restaurant in Novi, MI while Spyder plays a rough mix of a new song, and proceeds to sing it live. We were honored to be at a private Spyder Turner concert while sitting in his car. It doesn't get much better than that, folks. I can't wait for the upcoming release of Sypder Turner's new live CD. Surreal? Sort of. Superb? No doubt. With the cuts we heard and the new live CD coming out soon...here is a word of advice: when Spyder plays at a club or casino near you...get away from the slots or tables for a while and treat yourself to a real gentleman who sings and writes real songs that the angels in Heaven would be proud to add to their repertoire. Thanks for the fun ride, Spyder and David. Jon and I hope to have you join us (one more cheap shameless plug coming up) in our film "Point in Time" http://www.pointintimemovie.co m Also go here: http://www.spyderturner.com Best to you all, Cam |

Good to know that Spyder is still around and active. I pulled his LP from my vaults this morning to play Stand By Me on air as a listener request, and was reminded of the quality and versatility of his voice. Maybe I'll try another track from the LP next Sunday, if anyone's around- we're at www.solarradio.com and sky digital channel 879, and 'In Orbit' goes to air 10am til mid-day.. |

Welcome to Clive who goes under the moniker of Clive R on Solar. British fans will know who he is and I'm pleased to say I still hold a few copies of his fanzine "Shout" which was essential reading in the sixties. What can you tell us about your cd compilations Clive? I particularly enjoyed the Robert West one David |

Cam, Surreal I'm sure! My girls have become big Spyder Turner fans, especially of his vids on the web site and when he answered their email. I'm sure they'd love to hear some live Spyder. Their fave is "Ain't To Proud to Beg". They dance along with him during the instrumental bridge doing his steps. My youngest calls the move, where he's dancing backwards with a little backstroke, "The Spyder Turner". almost forgot...I still owe u an email. |

Hey Spyder: Thanks for giving proper due to your fellow writers on "Stop The Rain." Great song, folks. Keep your eyes and ears open for it. From the material I heard of Spyder performing live, The Greektown Casino gigs in Detroit will be a great time. |

It would be great if the members of SD, and Discuss Detroit would gather at Greektown and give support to one of our own, Spyder Turner. Soulaholic - If you and your "SD45CC" would meet me at Spyder's show, I promise to go to one of your gatherings. Whether in Dearborn or on 9 mile. Sue, Soulaholic, Dennis, Millie, Leo, Gary, SideBurn, Eric, Lynn Bruce, RJ Spangler (bring Joe with you), Fury13, Count, Medusa, CoolJu, and anyone else I missed, we have to party together sometime. It may as well be with Spyder. You can never tell who you may meet there. (It's always good to meet new friends.) Up the escalator, corner to the left at the Apollo stage. Let me know which day you all plan to there, and I will be there. You will be happy you did. VALET PARKING IS FREE. (Message edited by sis on September 29, 2004) |

Hey Sis! How are you?? Haven't seen you since the Four Tops celebration at the Opera House. I plan on going to see Spyder on the 14th (Thursday). Can't make it on Friday because Dennis and I are headed up North to see the color change! I like your idea about inviting Soulaholic and his crew to the Greektown Casino to see Spyder too. See you there unless you go on Friday. |

Hi Sis...this sounds like fun. I'm not a casino person, but I'm always game for an evening of Spyder Turner. Either night is ok with me, but Thursday might be better. BTW, Sis the Detroit SDF'ers party together for music, drinks, food and fun all the time, but no one ever shows up except the same group of die-hards. I'm aware of at least half a dozen get togethers in the past year, and I've been at all of them. It would really be cool if more local Detroiters could find the time to participate in these events. I understand that most of us have busy personal schedules and we can't always get away, even if we want to. That's fine, but I think some people just choose not to come for other reasons. I don't understand that. |

Hey Sis I have been to one of the SD45's it was fun Spyder has been to 2 and I am planning to go to more but I agree we need to support the performers also. You know we go to see pretty much everyone. The Joe Weaver party was a real blast. Spyder has some new surprises Craig Monroe is coming in town he is Emerald Jades husband who there is a thread about and will be added to show as second Key board player also Pree Clay's wife Has been added as background singer and will probably do something with Spyder he is also planning 2 shows because of some new songs he has added. Millie make sure you bring Dennis. As Dennis has mentioned he will be playing Bakers this Month and we plan on going. So if we can do Sd45 as well as SD live we could really get our Detroit Chapter going Hope to see you all. PS Oct. 14 is Thursday & 15 Friday so you can still see a Great Show and go up North on Weekend. |

Millie & Gary - Since you are going Thursday, I will be there. Gee - You are correct, you and Spyder gives everybody a play. You attend all of the affairs, giving your support. I tried that for two years in a row. This year I couldn't keep up with the events. Kinda slow in my old age. (LOL) Gary - To drive from my "home alone" in unfamiliar territory causes me stress. I do not like driving. (8Mile to Woodward to 9mile is stressful for me.) I went to Bart's Place on a Friday night, parked in the back parking lot at 11:30 at night. Came out and had a ticket on my windshield because I had backed into the spot in the parking lot. I was pissed. Of course you know the station is right across the street from the library. You feel safe, but dang, you sure pay for it. LOL. I'm not a record collector, and my 45's have been played until they've turned grey. I'm sure you all have a grand time. Perhaps I will meet you in Dearborn, which is closer to my home. Looking at their menu impressed me. I am aware that some SD'ers come all the way from Ann Arbor. Now, that is a true soul fan, a man, and no doubt can drive better than I at night time. Plus, that group of folks have something in common. I enjoy live performances more so than listening to the northern soul. I can't dance, but I can jump up and scream when Ali or Spyder, or Levi, sing to me. Gee - Thanks! I will take you up on that. I like being escorted when I go out at night-time. I can sit in the back and relax. Everyone knows I'm blind in one eye and can't see out the other one, especially at night. Back in the day, us ladies never had to drive. The guys had the cars, and they took you to a club over on the westside, then over to the eastside, trying to catch all the acts, then treated you to shrimp, BBQ. We dressed to please. Now, I dress for comfort. LOL |

Gary - LOL, in fact, I am accustomed to riding in a 1996 car. LOL. Thanks guys. You are all so nice to me. It is great to have such caring cyber-friends. I just putt putt putt slowly in the right lane. While those young males with their SUV's, ride on my bumper with their head lights shining through my rear view mirror, and then cut around my car at the very edge of my left bumper, getting my blood preasure boiling, and my legs shaking, my eyes are squinching because I cant see the street signs, as I need a new pair of glasses, and by the time I get to nine mile, I am worn out and too nervous to enjoy myself, and dread the ride back home, as by then more young SUV's will be out there, but now they have been drinking alcohol. LMAO. Going downtown is a staight shot for me. I traveled that route every week-day for 32 years, so I know it well. I just wish you all would meet in Detroit rather than the suburbs. I know you all are tired of hearing about my boring life history. But in a few years, you will understand my plight. LOL |

I said I wasn't going to do a review, but I will say that aside from Spyders fantastic performance (including the Elvis Presley's rendition), he sang with Pree one of Tammi and Marvin's classics. Gee - What was the name of that song performed by Spyder and Pree, which they did so well, I was about to jump out of my seat? Of course I think I did jump up about 3 times during the show. Once when Gail was singing Martha Reeves song, and once when Spyder was singing Eddie Kendrick, and Jerry Butler. I can't began to name those that were there to see the show. I'll let Spyder try to remember those. of course our friends Jim Cheers and Clay McMurray was there. (Message edited by sis on October 16, 2004) |
