As far as i understand --My Sugar Baby was cut when Frank Wilson(Sonny Daye) moved to L.a. as it was later cut by Connie Clarke(CHRIS)1968---I MAY BE WRONG BUT THEN AGAIN I OFTEN AM. Tony.C. |

I can't say for sure where Frank recorded this but bear in mind that prior to Motown's move in the 70's there was quite a bit of recording taking place at what was then known as Mowest Studios. I know Frank was one of the producers that was doing some work in L.A. at this time. |

That's right, Ralph. Frank was producing in L.A. in the mid sixties. Hal Davis, Frank Wilson, Marc Gordon, Chester and Gary Pipkin, Vince Love and a few others were writers for Jobete Music in L.A. The wrote songs mainly for L.A. artists, like Mary Love, The Autographs, Connie Clark, on Modern,Kent, Joker, Magnum and other L.A.Record labels. Hal Davis, Oma Heard and The Vows (all L.A. artists) had releases on VIP (but also on small L.A. non-Motown labels. I believe that was 1965-66. I think Frank moved to Detroit in late 1966 or early 1967. I'm guessing that Frank Wilson's vocal was recorded in L.A., and the track also, as it was the same on Connie Clark's version. |

A reference book I have says that Connie Clark's version was produced by Frank in September 1965 and released on a label called Joker. An instrumental version was on the Bside. If it's the same backing track, then Frank could have added his vocals later in either LA or Detroit. Frank's version of Do I Love You was done two months later in December 65 and was produced by Hal Davis and Marc Gordon which suggests it was definitely recorded in LA. As Frank was stil working out of LA in mid 65,Sugar baby was almost certainly a West Coast recording too (or was it??!). |

I agree, Mike S. It must have been recorded in L.A. (although some of Hal Davis' Brenda Holloway L.A. productions had background tracks recorded in Detroit). The background track doesn't sound to me like the Funk Brothers. I don't hear Detroit musicians on it. On "My Sugar Baby", it sounds like the same L.A. musicians that worked on Mary Love's, Gloria Jones' and other L.A./Jobete-related productions. The Connie Clark record was Joker 716. |

Talking of Frank Wilson, can anyone add to or correct the story that a couple of hip-hop heads looking for rare 12" singles in a Chicago record shop recently found only the third known copy of that ultimate soul rarity Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) and sold it in an online auction for $30,000?
