Listening to some of this brother's great riffs from the classic songs he did with his buddy, Smokey Robinson, it got me to thinking about other acts at Motown who had their own musicians, playing their own music... I know that Junior Walker had his own band, and that the Rare Earth's and Isley Brothers were their own bands, so were there any others??? Certainly there weren't many others... Eddie Kendricks after he went solo??? Anyway, back to Marvelous Marv... The man was clearly a sensitive creative soul, who was compatible, as a person with, with William Robinson... Those riffs on Tracks Of My Tears, Baby, Baby Don't Cry, and The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage, are timeless and transcendent figures of sound that evoke some the best memories of my young life... It is hard to believe that this guy was never "drafted" into offical funk brotherdom... Maybe it was Smokey's JUICE within the company that would never have permitted that, but he was as good a guitarist as Motown or anyone has ever had... Another of those very unsung musical legends of 60's Soul... Peace! Isaiah |

had the pleasure of meeting marv on Linwood near Elmhurst. We were rehearsing for a show produced by Calvin Glaze when our Guitarist Mike (can't remember his last name for some reason I'll have to ask Bobby Franklin because Mike played with him in "INSANITY") saw Marv walking past the hall and stopped him and asked how marv played the beginning rifts on "I LIKE IT LIKE THAT"..Marv took Mike's guitar and played it right there on Linwood for all of us to see. I can still remember how to play it also because of that day. |

Cornelius Grant was the Tempt's Live musical director. I've read online that he played on some of their studio recordings, though I can't authoritatively confirm it. |

Both Tarplin and Grant also (co)wrote more than a few tunes for the Miracles and The Tempts respectively. |

Hey Isaiah, Why are you speaking of Marv T in the pass tense? Wow. Marv is one of the nicest guys in the business. Infact most of Smoke's band past and present, up front and behind are all pretty cool but Marv T is a gentleman in a class all by himself. Here's a couple of pics from my personal collection. (1) Marv @ sound check (2) A much younger yours truly (w/o locks) & Marv clowin' around. |

Marv Tarplin is such a dynamic guitarist. How come he never went solo? He is definately in the same class as Phil Upchurch. |

Marv Tarplin did give the Miracles a more distictive sound...it also sounds like him on The Marvelettes "Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" and Wanda Rogers'solo LP "Return of The Marvelettes". |

Hey, Chazz, thanks for the pictures of Marvelous... I gotta admit, this man wrote some of the most special riffs in pop music ever... Props, props, props are due him in life, like right now, while he lives to be able to acknowledge them... Bad Ass Man, doubt... Peace! Isaiah |

Isaiah, I totally agree, hope I didn't sound over the edge about the pass tense thing. My bad if I did, it's all good here. Be well, Chazz |
