Hey SDer's !

This month of September, Right On ! Magazine
celebrates 33 years ! The first edition was an
October issue featuring The Jackson 5 on the
front cover and stories featuring Stevie Wonder
and Aretha Franklin's heartbreaks. Right On !
was the first black publication magazine to
catered to Afro-American teenagers. Do any of
you here on SD, remember purchasing this landmark
magazine back when of it's release ??? If so,
what were you're favorite section ????

Love, Peace, and hair grease !

Hey Mike: In cleaning out my parents home recently, I found a box of Right On magazines, Soul Newspapers and a few other goodies. Other than a musty odor, they're in good shape. I can't wait to read through them all. Maybe even put 'em on eBay!

Hey Mike & Linda!

I used to buy this magazine religiously! My favorite were the different pin-ups which covered my walls: Diana Ross, The Sylvers, The Emotions, Foster, Angie & Pat Sylvers..of course the Jackson 5, The Supremes (Mary, Jean & Lynda), Aretha...and the list goes on & on!

I used to buy it every month, from probably around 1974 up until the late 80s. Before I bought it myself, I used to sneak and look at my cousin's. She would clobber me if she caught me doing so. I still have a many of them, including the magazine's second issue.

Now when I see Right On! on a newsstand, I start to feel really old. I hardly recognize any of the performers.

First issue? I'm embarrassed to report that I have the first two years worth of that magazine packed away somewhere (I was an early subscriber). Got my first pics of Pamala Grier from Right On! :-) One thing though, anyone notice they never changed the masthead in all these years?

Sure I bought them too, I was a steady reader for a number of years and then I just lost interest in the mag. I sort of drifted fron Right On to the pages of "Soul" newspaper out of Cali and then another Soul (Black ?) out of the UK. You are so right about the masthead. I think I drifted because the mag kept it's focus on teenagers and I was rapidly becoming a man. Funny thing Mike I would get my soul music countdown from Jet and my articles (Motown) from Right On.

Hey Linda & SDF !
Linda, if I were you I would keep those issues
just for memory sake, lol. I lost mine in a bad
fire I was in 10 1/2 years ago, so I wish I knew
how to obtain the first few issues, Oct 1971 thur
Dec 1976. SDF, the color pin-ups were my favorite
as well as ' Ask Diane' and record charts.

I'm going to read through these magazines soon -- saving them for cold Fall evenings! When I do start reading through, I'll scan some of the more interesting articles and post them here.

Chancellor -- you're right. I probably won't sell them. I remember the excitement when it would arrive in the mail!

I have a stack of old Right On's in my closet. Some are torn and a bit worn from moving from place to place over the years. Of course my favorites were the Jackson Five posters. Remember when they created a friendly fued between the J-5 and the Sylvers? Fans would write in wanting more Sylvers...J-5 fans wanted things to stay the same!
Can't believe Right On use to cost 50 cents...I had to BEG my mother for the money...I had to do serious begging when they raised the price to "GASP" 75 cents!!!!
I feel so sad looking at the "new" Right On...I wouldn't spend 2 cents on it now! Sorry, I guess my age (or Generation Gap as we called it) is showing! :-)

Geez...now I'm really feeling my age here...
My sister Pamela bought the first few issues of Right On magazine which had the Jackson Five on the cover almost every month. I recall an article they published when Tito Jackson got married - my sister Pam's world was soooo crushed by the news!!!

Years later in 1982 my older brother Jesse was interviewed for Right On magazine when he was appearing on TV'S "The Greatest American Hero" and they published his photo in the mag. My mother must've bought at least a hundred copies of that issue!

GODDAM CHI,

What are you doing to a brother?

As I was scolling down, from cover to cover.... my neck started moving, first a little, then a little stronger....Back and Forth. Then to the Left 2.3.4.5.6.7.8. and Right 2.3.4....

I swear for 10 seconds I could feel my bush back on top, swaying with the beat.

...now can a bro get a closeup and maybe an inside peek at March 74...lol

Linda Di,

Somewhere in your scanning software is a "photo" or "picture" editing tool. Most of these tools will allow you to reduce the actual size of a picture and not just the "view" of it.

Pls email me tomorrow if you still need assistance. I'd love to help.

drop the number of pixels below 400. After that, make sure the picture file is less that 50 KB. If it's your average magazine try a size of 252 x 350 or 235 x 325 pixels. That should get you under 50KB. Also, be sure to save your scan as a jpeg.

That should do it! :-)

Chi D!!!!!

Great scans!!! I lost my Right On, Black Star, TCB & Soul magazines years ago :-(. I used to cut out the photos & put them into scrapbooks. As the late 70s came around, the posters & photos made it onto my walls, next to the black velvet Zodiac posters, above my Thom McCann exersoles & my mood ring :-)

I'd especially like to read that Soul magazine. I notice that it introduced us to The Dramatics, The Undisputed Truth & a pre-success Earth, Wind & Fire! That must have been interesting reading!

Then, there's the Right On magazine with Carol Speed inside! Well, an article & picture anyway! Man, articles & pictures of New Birth, Barbara Mason.....Man, I wish I had those! If Ms Horner & Co. were smart, they'd start re-issuing those early magazines. They could make so much money & we'd be a bit happier if we could buy them! I know that I would be.

Man, you just took me back to those Saturdays mornings, watching The Globetrotters & The J5, while eating AlphaBits.

Where did the time go???
