There were Funk Brothers and Sisters all over Detroit in the 60's. In my opinion Lou Beatty put out some really great stuff. As far as I know he had the La Beat, Mary Jane, and Rambler labels. His house band, the LPT'S really laid down some great backing tracks for classics such as:"Baby Don't You Weep", "This Won't Change", "I Am Nothing", "Mojo Man", and many others. I just talked with Ron Murphy about his knowledge of the La Beat operation. I'm sure Ron will offer his information in this thread. I met Nelson Sanders through Joe Moorehouse. I'm sure Joe will add something to this thread about La Beat. I'm pretty sure Graham talked to Edward Hamilton, Fred Bridges, and others who had La Beat connections. David, did Fred Bridges have anything to say about Lou Beatty/La Beat? I wonder where Curtis Trusel, Johnny Mills, Lester Tipton, Al Williams, and others are? If you have not heard anything from this label I highly suggest that you track it down. Hey Graham.......I'm still looking for that box of La Beat records. With Christmas approaching fast I'll take that copy of Lester Tipton that is on ebay RIGHT NOW!

Eric: Sad to say, Lester Tipton is has passed on, many years ago. He was a good friend of one of my business partners at Airwave. Lester was amazed when he found out "This Won't Change" was a hit in UK, and was worth a lot of money. He had NO copies of the record!

I believe that Cool School was also a Lou Beatty label. I believe he also had strong connections to a few other labels in NY and Florida, where he placed Edward Hamilton recordings.

Hi Eric

We toured Detroit in July with Fred Bridges and stopped off at the site of LaBeat where Fred provided lots of info, new to me, on this important label.

All will be revealed in our next webisode which should commence November due to Mike Hank's story being extended to 3 parts.

Hi Eric, and thanks for introducing a great topic.

I was listening to my interview with Melvin Davis just the other day and he emphasized that he was with James Hendrix and Carrie Records - on 14th Street - before it was called LaBeat. So were quite a few others, including Edward Hamilton and The Arabians.

I will quote Melvin in the second part of Mike Hanks' story as he was at D-Town and Carrie at the same time.

And as David intimated - Mike's story is turning into a bit of an epic and will now be 3 parts, not 2 as originally planned. I've still got to finish it!

Anyway... A great song on the Cool School label is "Soldier Coming Home." But I think Carrie is where this story originates and I'm really looking forward to David's webisode.

here is a couple of pictures that go along with this topic.

the 1st one shows Mr. Lou Beatty standing in front of LaBeat's offices and studio, the studio was located downstairs in the left side corner and a musican's dromedary was up on the 2nd floor

the 2nd picture shows Lou Beatty on the far right giving instructions to vocalist Johnny Mills and three other masqueraders during a session.

the studio had 2 Crown 2 track recorders and some Bogan mixers along with a dozen or so mikes, now before the 67 riots Mr. Beatty purchased a half-inch 4 track recorder but during the riots all the equipment went wheeling down 14th street and that was pretty much the end of LaBeat.

the photos were taken in December 1966.

I'll be interested to hear the exact history of the relationship between James Hendrix and Lou Beatty, their labels, and also that of them to the artists who recorded for both (Like Edward Hamilton, Arabians and a few others). I'd also like to find out about Lanrod, Le Mans and Jameco, and the ownership/lease/distribution deals there.

Graham - I think the add that you posted above is for the La Beat record. Just think if we could of caught some of those shows!!! Nelson is a really nice guy with a very unique and soulful voice. Charley Bannister used to run a music store in Detroit and gave music lessons. Sadly to say the last time that I heard, Charley is in really bad health. My little brother (16 years old) was taking drum lessons at his Detroit Drum School that he ran out of his house until Charley fell ill. Charley mentioned that he did some drumming for Robert West. I believe that he played on some early Falcons records. Where's Joe on this topic???

When I talked to Charley Bannister about his Petcol label he said that it was a name of a restaurant that Nelson Sanders was working at. I would imagine that this record is from about 1965??? Tony C. - As far as I know Yvonne Vernee was on Sonbert.

That Petcol records label design and indented pressing lead me to believe that the release was earlier than 1965. From the looks of it, I would have guessed 1962 or 1963 (outside possibility of 1964 or 1965). I can't recall seeing that particular (script) font on a Detroit record after 1963.
Eric, does it sound like 1965? Do you recognise the musicians (Detroit recording?). I assume that the reference to Yvonne Vernee coming out on this label was a joke, right? I don't remember seeing Charley Bannister's name on any other records. Did he produce any other Detroit records (own any other labels?)?

Soulville Publishing released a couple of 45s on the Soul label - after Mike Hanks dropped out of it. They were in 1963 - so maybe this Petcol 45 is from then?

the Petcol record was pressed in Cinicinati, Ohio by Rite record Productions and the 15337 number refers to Rite's job/invoice numbering system.

Rite was not used by many Detroit labels and rhey went out of business in the mid 1980's, Archer Record Pressing here in Detroit purchased 4 12 inch automatic presses from them and they are still in use today.

Nelson's record on LaBeat as scaned above came out late in 1966, so I would think the Petcol record would not be more than a year or so earlier since Sanders moved to Detroit from the south to try to get signed by Motown and was offered a Motown contract but decided agaist it when told there was no guarantee of a release.

Hey Mel.......Nelson Sanders "Mojo Man" for a fiver??? My copy is whipped but it plays quite well. I love that record. Both sides are really good.

I've posted some Carrie sides as well. Melvin Davis did a great job producing the Edward Hamilton record; a two-sider. The United Sound acetate is Clifford Binns, which is a great Carrie record.
