There was a story about this on ACCESS HOLLYWOOD a few weeks back. Brandy performs I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE. She didn't sound bad, but she wasn't Gladys. |

If there was going to a story based on my woman Gladys, I would pick the actress that played Laura on FAMILY MATTERS IMHO also a matter of taste. It hurt me when Gladys up and got married without tellin' me...LOL. Don |

Actually, I kind of think it's good choice. Part of American Dreams' MO is to pick a current popular singer or group and have them play the part of a performer on American Bandstand. IMHO there's a bit of a physical resemblance and Brandy can act. |

I think when there are singers around like Angie Stone, Jill Scott etc to come up with Brandy for Gladys is terrible.---and u know what--I saw Miss Knight last year and she could get away with playin herself!! |

No disrespect, but I don't think that Gladys would want Jill Scott to portray her. |

I'm willing to give Brandy a chance. With the right hairstyle and makeup, she could probably manage a decent resmblence to Gladys. We all know that Brandy's singing ability is nowhere near Gladys' but I'm sure she can come close enough to pull it off. BTW, I cringed in horror when I heard that Jamie Foxx was going to play the late Ray Charles in Ray's upcoming biopic, but after seeing the trailers, Jamie made a believer out of me. Maybe Brandy can do the same in her role as Gladys Knight. Jimmy Mack, you make a good point. Why not let Gladys play Gladys? |

I saw Brandy in a movie with Diana Ross. Good luck to Brandy and I'm so happy to see a story line on AD involving the dynamic Ms. Knight! Arcadia |

Aww come on, yall. It's just a TV show. It ain't even that serious. Get a grip!!!!! I remember how upset some of yall got when Monica played Mary Wells on the show, criticizing the clothes she wore, the way she wore her hair, her voice...I mean everything. I'm like, so what? Get over it. I think no matter who they got to play these singers, none of yall would be satisfied. Regardless to that statement, the way Gladys looks it wouldn't be a bad idea if she played herself. |

Don't get me wrong, Luke. It's just that every time one of these contemporary artists are chosen for this show to portray someone famous, there are people who are going to say, "Oh he/she's not right for the part" and find all kinds of flaws with the entertainer doing the portrayal. And I remember how uptight some folks on this board got with Monica playing Mary...I know you do, too. This is why I say that no matter who was chosen to play Gladys, or Mary or the Temptations or whomever, someone would object to it. |

Also I don't think think Janet don't seem the perfect to play Lena Horne either. As talent as Janet Jackson is, it don't feel right, it seems odd. This is IMO New York. |

Gladys could not play Gladys on American Dreams. Part of the concept of the show when it was created was to always feature a CURRENT top 40 star as one of the performers. The idea being that a current pop star would better at drawing in the younger crowd this show is partly designed for. That way younger people are introduced to a star from the past via someone they're familar with. With any luck it might inspire them to seek out the real thing. The show is about several families during the 60's and how the events of those times effect them. The center piece are two teenaged girls who are regulars on American Bandstand (shoot even Dick Clark doesn't play Dick Clark on the show although you see him on the monitors!). |

Good point, Chi-Drummer. The show is centered around those teenagers and their families. While the production staff could do a bit more research on the period "look" for each artist, it should not be the focus of attention. The controversy probably increases ratings, though. Frankly, I didn't even know this show was still running. LOL (Message edited by Uptight on September 14, 2004) |

I have never seen this show but I would say that there is a set of twin sisters who are on a national cell phone commercial (I think) who look more like Gladys than Gladys if thats possible...I never really pay attention to commercials (cable TV addict that I am) but these two sisters are fine and whenever I see them I see Gladys. |

Don, I agree that Laura from "Family Matters" looks just like a young Gladys. Vocally though, I would say Techina Arnold (Pam from "Martin")..she sounds like Gladys with her heavy alto voice |
