Yes, Soul Sister...NOBODY could top James Brown. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue was very exciting as was the Motortown Revue. Those 60's artists knew how to work a stage!! |

SoulSister you are so right......I didn't think anyone could top the Vibrations until I saw the Tempts.......and even though I loved the Tall & Talented sound and moves the Vibrations could just flat out perform. The Gladys led Pips were good too...... The Fantastic Four The Unifics The Marvelos' The Contours Just a few off the top of my head |

I read in "sweet soul music" that James Brown once jumped off a balcony at the Apollo trying to top Solomon Burke's live show (I think thats who they said). They said that Brown almost broke his neck. |

I agree with you 100% on those groups you mention SS.......... here's my list of the 60's artists I've seen live at the Apollo that were great live in my opinion: 1)The Temptations (the original) 2)The Five Stairsteps (awesome live !) 3)The Unifics (the white gloves, white shoes and black outfits.....slick choreograph gave the Temptations a run for their money) 4)The Esquires (also wore gloves.....did great moves on their current hit 'Get On Up') 5)Joe Tex (the mike trick...would do splits and throw the mike back and catch it with his foot or hand) 6)Jackie Wilson & James Brown......two of my soul heroes......what could you say about them !) I'll come up with more later........ great thread SS !!! Peace, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

I heard that The Isley Brothers had a great stage show in the '60s. Can anyone confirm this? I heard that they were acrobatic as hell, turning flips & everything. |

All good ones guys but I'm mainly talking about the acrobatic stuff, splits, flips, back over flips, throwing the mic spinning pulling oneself up by the collar like Jackie use to do & then catching the mic! Those smooth suave moves too!! JB & Jackie are right on top. For groups The Miracles, Little Anthony & Imperials, & Vibrations had that all going on first. They really knew how to put on a show!! Jackie Wilson was my favourite. Nobody can leave off James Brown. The Temptations were the creme de la creme. The Contours were the most acrobatic. The Spinners (especially in their early days with Motown, were very underrated. They really put on a surprising show. ALL the Motown group acts had class, and could move. (Miracles, Four Tops, etc.) The Vibrations. Ike & Tina Turner & Ikettes Chuck Berry (dancing along & doing the splits while playing his guitar). Little Richard (Dancing while still playing the piano) The Drifters. The Marvelows (what a routine, when they sung "I Do" (they were right up there with the Vibrations and Contours on that one). The Olympics (acted out songs-reminiscent of the old Robins/Coasters and other novelty acts of the late 40s and 50s). |

Good Morning Soul Sis & Jimmy, I like your pics. A month or two ago I was listening to BLUESBEFORESUNRISE locally here on the radio. Steve Cushen was playing alot of Little Miss Cornshucks, Big Maybelle and Screamin' Jay. Alot of times when I don't listen to radio I'll listen to his broadcast over the net at BLUESBEFORESUNRISE.COM midnite's Chicago time, you know. I heard mostly all of Little Miss Cornshucks' material at one time or another, and I like what I hear from listening to Steve's show and always had. Big May's stuff I've heard so far, I wasn't that familiar with her earliest recordings though I'm fond of her records. I was was turned on by her soul records. Actually, I was in tune with her music when Joshie Jo Armstead and others we're writing for her, meaning her soulful recordings. From a shouting blues to a sweet & petite vocal styling. I'am at awe hearing Steve spin every week. Screamin' Jay Hawkins use to scare the livin' sh** outta me, words just can't desribe it. As time went on I got use to him. I dug his performances on film's like Devil In A Blue Dress, A Rage In Harlem and A Bucket Of Blood. These are my favorite films are these your favorite films sis. You made me more aware of the earlier Manhattens career. I was aware of them all the time but only thru friends. But wasn't truly aware of their early and various label the fellas we're associated with. You might not believe this, I did have a few lp's by them at one time. But I only played their Carnival lp's more because that's what alot of my friends and other's we're into more. The Vibrations, speaking for myself I was into their Okeh lp's more, i may of had some Chess or Checker singles about. When I say lp's The Manhattens and Vibrations are to me lp artist, because a person always got more for their buck, and if someone'll see them in concert I'd assume they'd be getting the whole package. I see why Bobby Eli always talks about The Vibes alot. I never got a chance to post Eli asking him did The Vibes ever do their pop/jazz/showtunes when he we're their guitarist. The Vibes & Manhattens we're not only known as uptempo nitty gritty soul/r&b, but they all we're class acts first and foremost. If the Vibrations ever got with Bobby & the rest of Philly and labels there, they've would've sent all the groups and vocalist back to woodshedding, and would have been Philly's #1 group. Don, i just want to add a little bit to your post about the Vibrations. I saw them back in the early sixties, first at the Regal Theater and then at the Tivoli. They were such acrobatic dancers that you would have thought they came out of the circus.....ie the mike tricks, the splits, jumping over each other, the flips (in suits!) My mother was a huge fan and she would take me to the stage shows, the early matinee at the Regal and the evening show at the Tivoli. But to borrow a line from Archie Bell, not only could they dance, but they could sing as well as they want". To this day I have never forgotten the performances and yes I would agree that both the Manhattans and Vibrations put a lot into their album sides as well as there shows and you always got more for your money. Now I was first exposed to the Manhattans with their hit "Follow Your Heart" and later I Call It Love (Carnival)guess you call that my teen favorite love dustie. I have been a record buying fan ever since even after Smitty left the group and Gerald Alston was installed as the lead singer, these men could always sing with the best of them. Thanks for taking me back to a special place.....The Regal....man its where I saw the Motown Review...Miracles, Tempts, Stevie Wonder,Supremes as well as the Jackson Five before they went to Motown when they had they local hit "Big Boy" on Steeltown Records...... |

Hi Don & Kdubya; To elaberated more "Smitty" was my common-law husband. Gerald only first started with the group when The Manhattans were appearing at his college in N.C. when Smitty experienced a seizure there, just a little over a month beforee Smitty passed. Gerald was a big fan of Smitty's (as well as Little Anthony's & Sam Cook's) so he knew all the songs already. Gerald was only 17 years old at the time. He really didn't want to join the group at first as he eventually wanted to be a solo act in the tradition of Sam Cook's gospel roots, when Sam was with the Soul Stirrers. Gerald sang at Smitty's funeral and offically started that month at the Apollo's Christmas show. Prior to that whenever Smitty had fallen ill that previous year, they had Blue's cousin (our close friend), Carnival Artist Phil Terrell help out a couple of times. For audiences, their favorite Smitty live performances were "I'm The One Love Forgot", "Can I", "When We Are Made As One" (my fave that Smitty wrote), & "If My Heart Could Speak". Smitty's own personal fave was "Alone On New Year's Eve", a tension-filled heartbreaker! I put the Manhattans on my list because the first captured me with Smitty's painful expression of life thru his songs and their commanding stage presence with the tux, top hats, white gloves & cane in a dramatic stage presentation. Those gloves would illuminate in the dark theater as they performed their original stage routines & choreography!! I did a whole Photo Thread on them, which should be in the achives from November 2003. Little Miss Cornshucks-One of 'Jimmy's favorite' performers. She was a tiny little lady that appeared like a little country bumpkin girl, dressed in straw hat and raggety farm clothes who would sit on the edge of the stage swinging her straw basket then when she opened her mouth to sing and that big voice would boom out of her the audiences went nuts! She also played the Club Delisa alot in Chicago in the late 40's & early 50's. Big Maybelle- She was one of 'Jimmy & My' most favorite vocalists with a ballad, man could she phrase and tell a story, alot like Jimmy only in her voice. She also put on a great visual show to rival any stage acting in her interpetation of a lyric and in telling the story of life the song presented. Mabel Smith was a born storyteller, very expressive stage presence. Sceamin Jay & Little Richard (with all his make-up) & Gorge Clinton, all scared me the first time I saw them up close!!!LOL!!! The Vibrations- all true what you say, they were fab-u-lous performers, always amazing to witness. S.S. |

Juice, in 1960 at Cornell university, the fraternities had a fall weekend party. One frat house had the band I was with(Johnny&the Hurricanes),next door was the Isley Brothers and the next was Bo Diddley. We all would check out each other on our breaks. We walked in on the Isley brothers set and MAN let me tell you that those guys were working!!! They were all over that stage in the frat house.Back in the day they each must have lost a quart of sweat after every show they worked and sang so hard. |

Hi Lynn; Actually in the 60's James Brown would sweat out 7 pounds during one of his performances. I remember the time at the Apollo when he was sent to the hospital for dehydration. James had to take salt tablets. There's good reason why he was called "the hardest working man in show business", because he was!! S.S. |

Soul Sister,as a former marathoner,I can believe that. It's really bad to lose those electrolites though. I think that most musicians and singers in the sixties and earlier, lost a lot of water as most places weren't air-conditioned.Plus those were the days when you always went on stage with a suit and tie and maybe a vest.WHEW!! In the same year as above we played outside in August in St.Petersburg Fl. in wool suits and we must have lost a few quarts. We were young and that's how you had to dress if you went on stage |

The old Orlando Sports Stadium was a huge metal venue, sides could be partially opened, but no AC & James Brown would always be there like twice a year and usually one of those shows would be in the summer. I don't know how we in the audiance could stand it much less the performers. |

I wish I could get in touch with Steve thru email. I can log onto his site but can't send or recieve any emails. I wish I can find out what Steve's show is gonna be about this week. I must have missed something, but no matter what Steve does, he never tries to be safe and always spins something his listeners will like. Man, if he we're to get a email from Sis of Mr. Scott's cuts, I think he'll be abluge? Well, whatever's cleaver. Don |

Thank you, thank you, thank you Soul Sis. I was listening to Steve's show this weekend. This would be quite interesting to know that Steve had a Battle Of The Best between Big Maybelle vs. Big Mama Thorton...as far I was concern their we're NO winners. I didn't have any scratch paper around to write down the name of their songs, but I remember some tunes that Big Maybelle done. One tune she recorded under the name of Christen Chappman "Hurry Hurry". Here are some titles that Steve played on Big May are Gabblin' Blues, Ain't To Be Played With, and Please Don't Leave Me_____, that I recall. Big Mamma's Hound Dog, I Smell A Rat, Walking Blues, and a recording w/ The Harlem Allstars titled "Alright Baby". Great show-great show-a great show. I was wondering if you two are into Sippie Wallace? DON |

Hi Don; For me no one can compare to Big Maybelle's interpetation of a lyric and phrasing on the ballads in the female vocalist catagory. No, Jimmy doesn't remember Sippy Wallace and I'm not familar with the name either. Any more specs? S.S. |

Actually Sippy Wallace did some vocals on some of pianist and boogie woogie king Albert Ammons, that Jimmy may remember Albert? Do you (if) you remember seeing a video with Lena Horne, and she had two piano players in this particular video? Two of the pianist we're Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons. Albert has a son name Gene Ammons that's plays sax. Don |

Being new to the thread, I must add my dad's group The Super Sonic Sexy Soul Delfonics with their 1968 performance of La La means I love You, and Are you gonna break your promise and Didn't I blow your mind ...I have seen footage of these early shows, and I know the stage performance was all that...and this group was famous world wide for their choreography which so happens to have been taught by my father Mr Wilbert Hart of the Original Delfonics |

Thanks Tony for remembering..they had a legacy that was hard to follow..I have heard friends of my mom say if you were a dude you would not want to take your girl to a fonic concert...they had the girls coming out of the seats up on the stage and throwing underwear up at them...I was too little to remember that part...but I have heard the stories of the sexy soul delfonics...they were badddd...handsome...tall...lea n and their clothes was custom made to fit every inch of the body...curves and all...I have seen some of the stage gear from the sixties...oh yeah, they were hot..alright...melting hearts--Harts...and a whole lot of babies was born during that time and I was one of them...smile |
