I was looking at the strand 'Sexual Harrassment' and thought 'what a name for a group! LOL. Tell me SDF, what is the strangest or interesting name of a group you have heard? Id there a story behing the name? Do tell!

The strangest I have heard was a group called 'GOD's Gift To Women' - circa 1980's...I forgot the song title right now, but I had a tape of the song and I know all the guys thought they were 'pretty boys'. LOL. I will holler back on tha tone unless ome one knows who I am talking about. I remember tha tthey came out of Philly (pretty boy land..lol) or South Jersey (almost pretty boy land).LOL.

Hi Dyva!

One name that comes to me right off the bat is a group called The Chubukos (spelling?). They made this song called "Witch Doctor Bump" in the early 70's and were on the Mainstream label. I have no idea where the name came from or what it meant.

Hello DyvaNaye

I always thought that THE CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR sounded like a strange name. Then years later I found that there is a district in Brooklyn NYC called "Crown Heights", which I believe they were from. However there was also a film called "The Thomas Crown Affair" .. so maybe that is where they got the inspiration for the name.

On one of the GOLDMINE C.Ds ( "Essential Mellow Groove"?) there is a track by GODS GIFT TO WOMEN, a really nice mellow ballad, but I thought it was from Alabama or Mississippi. I shall have to investigate further this evening.

And how about names like DOCTOR BUZZARDS ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND .. I always thought that was strange.

There's a local Detroit garage band called the "Electric Six" that is doing quite well in England. The reason I bring it up is the Bass player calls himself John R. Dequindre. The band claims he met the devil between two parallel streets instead of the crossroads. ;)

"Dead Kennedys" has to be the worst name ever. That's setting the bar real low.

Hi again!

I have a tune in a southern soul compilation and don't knows what are more strange (and long!) if the title of the song or the name of the group:
«Just Because The Package's Been Unwrapped And Oppened (Doesn't Mean The Merchandise Is Spoiled» by Alder Ray Black & The Fame Gang.

Also i knows a Salsoul group with the name "Ripples". I studed that "ripples" (in geological) are one kind of stratification in different angles.

Some others:
-(Spanish) Frank Psiquiatra
-Everithing But The Girl
-Tosca (also in geological it's porous calcarie roc!)
-reagge act Rosco Ferguson & The Supersonics

Peace!

Also Dyva, when you break out Witch Doctor Bumo by The Chubukos, flip it over & check out the intro break on House Of The Rising Funk. Great break beat for sure!

Hello again DyvaNaye.

I searched out that GODS GIFT TO WOMEN track last night .. its on a Goldmine C.D. called "Essential Sweet Soul Collection" and is titled "Stop to Think It Over".

According to the liner notes its from New Orleans, but if I were hearing it "blind" I would think that it was a philly track as it sounds very similar to HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES in their A.B.C/DAVID EBO era.

I wonder if it is the same group? Surely there couldn't be two groups of men out there who both thought they were God's gift to women?

Roger

I imagine that "land apples" are the same as "road apples" or hardened "cow pies".
I still like "Gefilte Joe and the Fish" best. It's not the "strangest" by far. "Hitler's Concentrations" and "The Dead Kennedys" are in extremely bad taste. I assume they got those groups the attention they wanted. "Wet, Wet, Wet" is kind of unusual. I still prefer group names with an "s" on the end, indicating there are mor than one person. Bird group names, and names based on human traits are nice (something to do with singing or the sound or tunes). i'm not impressed by names picked to just to be different, and to draw attention. And what's with Mo(e)terhead (I don't have an umlaut on my English keyboard). What is a Mo(e)tor? That's akin to Haagen Dasz (with umlaut over the 2nd a)-to be correctly pronounced as Ha-aey-ggen Dass. That was no Scandinavian who made up that silly name. I guess the Mo(e)torhead members should have taken English lessons!

I just thought of a great name for a no-nonsense group: "Dump, Or Get Off The Pot". Are there still Punk groups?
