PHILADELPHIA SOUL LEGENDS OF THE AIRWAVES...

Just received my copy of what promises to be a monster hot seller DVD produced, edited, directed, and everything but manufactured, by Weldon Arthur McDougal III... The DVD, wrapped in a very handsome package, with a picture that looks like Broad St in the city of Brotherly Love on the cover, features the legendary DJ's in Philly during the era when Soulful Rhythm and Blues was king... Douglas "Jocko" Henderson, Georgie "the man with the goods" Woods, Carl Helm, and fast talkin', quick thinkin' Sonny Hopson, are the featured legends, and the subject of this video, which captures them in all of their glory, for one night, in the studios of WHAT-AM...

The DVD is jam packed with memories, and includes a beautiful slide show of pictures of the DJ's, and other very famous personalities, including Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Berry Gordy, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, The Jackson 5, and Weldon McDougal, himself... I found Sonny Hopson and Jocko Henderson to be particularly compelling men, with their non-stop charisma oozing through the airwaves... Jocko was at least 80 years old when this footage was taken in 1999, and he was still performing a community service for a lady who called into the show in obvious need of a sympathetic ear... A year and a half after the video, Douglas Jocko Henderson was dead, in July, 2000...

In my humble opinion, this kind of history of the music and culture needs to be transmitted to our youth, and to those adults who've forgotten those beautiful times... That's the great treasure of this video, for if it had not been done, then we're looking at a tremendous history lost... Thank you, Weldon, you're an extremely talented man, and I look forward to your future projects...

Peace!
Isaiah

What's up Ladies of SDF! I think Weldon needs to put his email address up on the board for this one... As the Great Cornelius used to say, it's gone be a stone hotseller, and you can quote me(smile!)

Listen, in addition to the luminaries and personalities previously mentioned, the DVD contains some very nice old school music played by the DJ's themselves, as well as some choice cuts provided by the producer, Weldon McDougal...

I saw where someone had asked Weldon what he was doing in the business in a recent thread, so i thought I'd take it upon myself to bear witness to that naysayer, that doubter, and first class cynic, that Weldon McDougal is doing what he's always done, and that is be a producer of creative products and materials related to the music we - and he - love so well...

Peace!

Weldon, is Sonny Hopson still around today??? Brother cut quite a handsome and dashing figure on the video... Actually, he reminded me in his looks and mannerism of a certain muslim minister we all know and love(smile!) Very dapper cat, no doubt...

Also, Sonny was giving props to all of the folks who'd come through the radio station, folks whom hed taught the business, and some who'd taught him... He mentioned that the station was owned by Inner-City Broadcasting and Percy Sutton, and said he'd been instrumental in the creating the move to WBLS... Can you confirm that??? Wow, I had no idea that Inner City owned that station down in Philly, but I shoulda known, because a couple of Philly DJ's came here, and succeeded some of the BLS DJ's upon their departures from the station in the 70's... But seeing Jocko do his thing was priceless, man... What a sweet and engaging man he was...(smile!)

Peace!

Yeah, well, the video is well worth the asking price, and then some... I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these masters behind the mic again...(smile!) What's interesting is that, with the re-emploment of Imhotep Gary Byrd To the airwaves here in the city, as well as, some of the younger artists like Alicia Keys using Ray Goodman & Brown in their songs, and signing them to record deals, there seems to be a resurgence of the old shchool soul in the offing... Stephanie Mills has her own label, Al Green and Antia Baker, and the OJays have new deals... The old troopers seem to be on the march again, and its beautiful(smile!)

Listen, Weldon, I was listening to Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West, and Tavis Smiley promoting their speakers tour on WWRL recently, and Dyson let slip that he's doing a book on the impact of one Mr. Marvin Gaye, and that you are playing a very prominent role in providing some of the information in that book... Now, He didn't say when this book would be completed, and out for the public to consume, but I can't wait to go out and get a copy... I know Dyson from his works on Tupac Shakur and Malcolm X, so that book should do Marvin a lot of justice... Hope it turns out well...

Peace!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (68.236.53.71) on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 12:58 pm:

Carl helm sang on al of my sessions as well, along with Phil Hurtt, Ron Tyson and/or Bunny Sigler and the Sweeties.
We usually doubled the three guys and then doubled the three girls giving a total of twelve voices.
Because of this technique, our backing vocals always sounded silky smooth because of the subtle chorusing effect caused by the singers' vibratos coupled with the relatively soft volume which were mike close with the mike, either a Neumann 87 or an AKG 414 set on the omni pattern.

Glad to see you guys showing acknowlegement of Carl's achievements' back in the era. I have been trying to get him recognition as a radio legend as some of the other Philly DJ's. As a young head at the time, I was in the studio when he was sitting in one night for Georgie W. or Bishop, and witnessed his break-out on the air and becomming a radio personality that I think lastest over 30 years. I do believe he should be given more credit for his contribution to Philadelphia radio than he has received up to this point.

Yes I remember, I remember Al Alberts coming to our house to take him to New York to record it. I think he did three singles, the other one was "Tenderly" can't remember the third. I think they were trying to get him up against Johnny Mathis and Adam Wade. This was like 1961-62. Let's see, I'll trade you a Gold "Sideshow" Plaque for "Ring Around the Rosie". The record is kind of warped though.

Radio station W-H-A-T in Philadelphia was and still is at 1340 kc. Their original studios were located at 3940 Conshohocken Ave., and I believe the broadcast tower is still there. They were owned by Wm. and Dolly Banks from approx.1948 until the mid-1980's. W-H-A-T FM (96.5) changed call letters to WWDB cir.1969. The AM format was simulcast on FM until 1958, when separate studios were built to host the jazz format. This is were Sinatra host Sid Mark (*alias Sid Feigelman) began his career. The only time I can recall the FM ever simulcasting with the AM after 1958 was on the morning after Martin Luther King's death. The broadcast was handled by Mary Mason , and it was the beginning of her career as talk host, rather than just a 'gospel queen". Sadly, no known tapes of this historic broadcast exist.

W-H-A-T was famous as a rhythm & blues station since the early 1950's, when DJ Raymon Bruce popularized the format. The early gospel queen preceeding the arrival of Mary Mason (*alias Bea Turner) in 1958 was Porsha Perry. Jocko was also featured for a short time. Other jocks such as Sir Lancelot, Hot Rod, and Kae Williams handled various slots.

The golden age of W-H-A-T as Soul Radio began with the arrival of program director George Wilson in 1/1965. The lineup consisted of:
Ernie Fields (6-10a)
Billy Foxx (10a-2p)
Sonny Hopson (2-6p)
Georgie Woods (6-9p)
Jerry Blavat (9-11p)
Louis Heywood (11p-6a)

During this era, W-H-A-T was known for the rocket ship blastoff at the top of every hour, and the words "AND NOW ANOTHER POWER HOUR ON PHILADELPHIA'S POWERHOUSE, W-H-A-T!".

Fields departed in late 1967 for WOOK in D.C., replaced by Scott Taylor. Blavat left prior to March 1966 to concentrate on television. Heywood departed around 1967, and was never heard from again.

Wilson departed in early 1968, and became the national P.D. for the Heftel Radio Group. Then, in July 1968, Rocky G. (*alias Rocky Groce) was hired as program director from WWRL NYC. It's not widely known, but Frankie Crocker turned down the offer! Taylor and Woods departed. Woods became the wake-up jock at crosstown W-D-A-S.

W-H-A-T station billed itself as the Soul-Psychedelic station beginning July 29, 1968, and actually sprinkled in several pop hits, such as "Revolution" by the Beatles, "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf, and "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo!. The art work on the weekly record surveys of this period bear witness to this unusual but highly innovative period.

The lineup became:
Gary Edwards (6-10a)
Billy Foxx (10a-1p)
Rocky G (1-4p)
Buster Jones (4-7p)
Sonny Hopson (7-10p)
Champ Haggins (10p-1a)
Bogary Robinson (1-6a)

Robinson was drafted into the armed forces in September 1968, replaced by ex-W-D-A-S FM personality Lloyd Fatman. Edwards and Jones departed 2/69. Jones ended up in L.A., and is the voice on the radio spot for the motion picture
"Shaft" that says "If You Wanna See Shaft, Ask Your Mama!". Edwards, a fabulous talent who was under-rated, returned to Cleveland. Hopson went
back to afternoons, and Steve Byrd was brought in for 6-10p from Katz St.Louis.

In July 1969, Les Anderson was hired as program director, and took up middays. Mornings were covered by Phil Moore. Byrd got into some trouble in 10/69, and departed (see Phila. Bulletin microfilm, front page article, 10/69, for details, or email me at address below to purchase a photstat of the page. Soon afterward, Byrd was hired for weekends at market giant W-I-B-G, but left in early 1970 without much fanfare. He was replaced by W-M-I-D Atlantic City's Gary Lane.

In April 1970, Gus (The Groove) Lewis was hired as program dirctor. The station was billed as "The Bad Black Lion", with an earth-shattering lion's roar at the top of every hour. The lineup became:
Tony Quinn (6-9a)
Mel Butler (10a-1p)
GG Lewis (1-3p)
Sonny Hopson (3-6p)
Mark Anthony (6-10p)
Champ Haggins (10-1p)
Llloyd Fatman overnights.

For a continuation of this timeline, recordings, photos, songs and memorabilia pertaining to the Golden Age of W-H-A-T radio, please email me at the address posted at the website zatmandu.com

(also, some very special airchecks of Jocko at
Philly's W-D-A-S radio are available for purchase; again, email me at the address posted at zatmandu.com for inquiries)

Juice,
Heres a funny but true Rocky G story.

back in '79 at the pinacle of our existance, there was a big'Disco- Biz party' at Philly's big club, Second Story with many luminaries of the day in attendance.
I was sitting at the bar aand Rocky G was nearby, so I introduced myself and he then said:
"Isnt there a young BROTHER here in Philly named Bobby Eli"? so I told him that he was looking at him!
I supposed that because of the association with the music that we made, he assumed that I was not a white guy(whatever thatis)

What's up Isaiah, Bobby E? Isaiah, you keep coming up with these sites & stuff, all you're leaving for me is toaster leavings. But, it's all good, my bro :).

Bobby E, that's a funny story, it's very consistent with realiry. I know that when I was growing up, I never dreamed that all of those funky sounds from Stax, or Atlantic was being played by Blue Eyed Soul Brothers. I really appreciate how much love they showed the music. When you consider how places like Memphis was back in those days & the things that were going down back then, their comraderie was most heartwarming. I would go out on a limb & say that this just goes to show you how powerful music is.

The ability of these men to swing together, definitely helped break down some funky racial barriers. My Blue-eyed Soul brothers deserve much respect, as they have shown true love for our musical heritage. Where others were knocking it & trying to relegate it as second rate, they embraced it. They proved that any person, with the ability to feel, is capable of having Soul. Our musical heritage is richer because of that. In the event that it hasn't been said, I extend a debt of thanks to all of my blue-eyed brothers. Not to the fakers, but to the ones who were there before it was popular to do so!

Peace Zeke, Peace Bobby E!!

No, Carl, don't stop the music, brother!!! I saw you in the video rapping with Jocko, and I said, "damn, now that's royalty!" Whew, you don't know that that picture hit me so hard, particularly in light of Jocko's passing a little over a year later... I was moved - really moved to see the "old Man" in his chair, doing what he did so well for so long..

And you, brother, you appeared so emotional about things that night, the adrenaline had you so charged up, so pumped... I could see it, and I could empathize with it! You and Sonny and Jocko and Georgie Woods made me long for the days of the old jocks in my city... Fortunately, one of your friends, I'm sure, Imhotep Gary Byrd is back on the air on two stations in the city, and that bodes well for cats like you and Sonny - providing you're still interested... Sonny is in a recuperative mode right now, but, wow, wouldn't it warm his heart, and heal his body to know that someone out there wanted him to do a few hours a week on the air... I'm sure that would be loved by a lot of Philadelphians... Thank you much for posting, Carl... I appreciate your warmth and soul...

Peace!
Isaiah

Oh wow! Carl Helm! That takes me back to when I was in a full body cast listening to him and Georgie Woods trying to dance in bed! Carl thanks for getting me through the hottest summer of my life 1964!

Carl, I had no idea when you would sometimes sing along with the records on air that you actually sung on some of those records!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (68.236.53.71) on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 - 03:17 pm:

Nosey,

Carl sang on MOST of the Phiily hits and also had some singles under his own name back in the day, but I wont get into that right now cause I dont want him to get mad at me!(smile)
