Favorite M*O*T*O*W*N Album Covers
----- other than of Motown Girl Groups:

DIANA ROSS:

* "Surrender" (great DR close-up w/ big eyes, drama eye make-up & hoop earings)

* "The Boss" (clever, sexy drawing of DR w/ low-cut top and w/ smokin' cigarette)

* "Eaten Alive" (daring Diana as a tigress)

BRENDA HOLLOWAY:

* "Every Little Bit Hurts" (sophisticated and classy soul w/ BH in gorgeous, tight, sleeveless, pink satin gown, sexily leaning up against a wall) [Unfortunately, the only album Motown ever released on BH.]

BONNIE POINTER:

* "Bonnie Pointer" (the one and only; exciting)

THE TEMPTATIONS:

* "Takin' Care of Business" {with Diana Ross & The Supremes} (beautiful color and on the scene action with grand dancing moves by D.R.S. and funky dance steps by Tempts)
* "In A Mellow Mood" (now famous, classic, close-up, original line-up, each w/ a leg up, one arm on leg, holding chin)
* "Joined Together" (=new=) (there's that classic line-up foto of The Tempts again and a nice one of The Supes: Diana, Mari and Cindy in yellow chiffon) [Obviously, Motown agrees w/ my choice above -- it's the exact same great Tempts pic.]

THE FOUR TOPS:

* "Reach Out, I'll Be There" (powerful, live action effect w/ hot red lettering)

SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES:

* "What Love Has Joined Together" (beautifully mellow)

THE JACKSON 5:

* "Diana Ross Presents The J-5" (forward-facing, action, zigzag line-up w/ showtime-type framing)

THE RUFFIN BROTHERS:

* "I Am My Brother's Keeper" (artistic rendering, close-ups/split screen)

THE ISLEY BROTHERS:

* "I Guess I'll Always Love U" (romantic beach scene) [Interestingly, no pix of the brothers! -- and many of us know why.]

MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL:

* "Easy" (beautiful, effective, close-up drawing)

SHORTY LONG:

* "Here Comes The Judge" (too funny w/ SL in judge's wig)

VARIOUS ARTISTS:

* "A Very Merry Motown Christmas"

OMG!!! STOP!, Love Child, Spookey, Raggedy Old Scarf, Supreme Fan, Livin' In Shame, Motown Boy, Trip-to-Spain, Breath-Taking Guy, Baby Love, and Bobby & Marsha, and Baby, and Bless You and I now, and others (except one) temporarily overlooked the most famous Motown record album cover of all time!!! Everyone on this Forum knows it, that's for sure. Of course, it's supreme. It's even been reprinted, redone and reflected by news media and artists all around the world. It is as follows (Motown drumroll):

* "THE SUPREMES sing HOLLAND-DOZIER-DOZIER". That famous, real close-up of just the faces of (left-to-rite) Flo, Mari and Diana with the dramatic eye make-up with the entire album cover in a symbolic goldtone as in "gold" hits. Sure enough, it yielded two huge #1s: "U Keep Me Hangin' On" (late 1966) and "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone" (early 1967). The cover of this album is almost always used in any story of the classic Supremes, has been used on the front of posters, greeting cards, postcards, artists' renditions, etc. They used to put Santa hats on the girlz and for years they were marketed as Christmas cards. And, in fact, it is the cover of "DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES' The Ultimate Collection" on c.d. and cassette in 1997. The cover of the new "D.R.S.: The #1s" is a photo taken from that same photography session. It's no coincidence. It is the ultimate look of The Supremes. Just as the album cover was shown on "M-25" (1983) U should rightfully expect to this famous album cover photo on "Motown 45".

Credit-Where-Credit-Is-Due-Dep't:

The Soulful Detroit Forumers who did select "THE SUPREMES sing HOLLAND-DOZIER-HOLLAND" as absolutely the best Motown album cover (even Andy Warhol would agree, and I believe he did) are the following: NYC Motowner, Uptight!, PHolt, and a word U wouldn't associate with the girlz, "Common". Congratz, U all have great taste, too!

Must give out a prop to one other Motown albumn cover -- which I bought in 1969 and still possess -- mentioned by some S.D. Forumers:

TAMMI TERRELL:

* "Irresistable" (cute, colorful, big box earrings, unique pose sitting w/ legs crossed)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st Degree: Fayette --

Which "Meet The Supremes" album cover do U mean? That was the one album cover that Motown re-did, because the girlz hit #1 the following year. The first version was each girl on a barstool; and the second edition was a close-up of the 3 faces (Diana, Mari & Flo) framed in a dreamy, almost crystal ball effect. The contents reamained the same.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Love Child:

Always 2nd best, we know -- but mislabeling the artist name on "Reflections" (above)!? It sure enuf was not "THE SUPREMES", as U wrote. Remember the bruhaha from some petty quarters which incredibly still goes on somewhat today? "Reflections" -- the single and the album -- were the first w/ the name expansion to: DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES!!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By STONEWALL (68.237.107.94) on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 09:54 pm:

P.S. to Uptight! "Maybe", as in the 3 DEGREES, U can do us SDF-ers a "Solid As A Rock" and calculate the top favorite Motown album covers. My vote goes to "D.R.S. sing H-D-H". Of course, most folks mentioned several, so every album cover mentioned is a vote for that album cover. I'm w/ U; I think the "DRS/HDH" won! It is unquestionably the most renowned Motown album cover in the world.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Love Child (209.42.40.145) on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 04:06 pm:

SUPREMES/DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES...same difference...BIG DEAL, you know what I meant.

Top of pageBottom of page   By STONEWALL (68.237.107.94) on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 04:41 pm:

Loosen up that old, dirty, raggedy scarf, Love Child! Of course, I know who -- not what -- U meant by mislabeling "Reflections" as by THE SUPREMES instead of the correct DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES. And, no, they are NOT the same. Ask Cindy; she joined D.R.S. not just The Supremes. Plus, in the music world, including listings on radio stations as to what artist sang a song, they state the actual name of the artist that is on the record label, not a former name. For example, in boxing they state "Muhammed Ali", not Cassius Clay, even so I'd know who U meant there, too.

Perhaps the issue is being corrected? On the S.D. board, I've observed that the participants are the most accurate and detail-oriented and not allergic to correction. That is one way people learn.

"In those eyes I see reflected a hurt, scorn, rejection.... Love Child."

LOL......Stoney you're confusing me wit another song by THE SUP...oops my bad...DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES. I AM NOT LIVIN'IN SHAME, so there is no dirty raggedy scarf around this head...LOL

Don't make me go down to STONEWALL and settle difference..LOL.

Ur 2 much!!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By STONEWALL (68.237.107.94) on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 07:28 pm:

U got me there, Love Child! Hats off -- err, scarfs off. Butt, nonetheless, the same family. In song, of course, your mother is the grandmother of "Love Child" and it was Mama who wore the dirty, raggedy scarf around her head and the stockings low around her feet. And she also wore a sloppy dress that U were so ashamed of. I bet U didn't even want your uppety Uptown friends to see her. I'd ask how she's doin' butt I won't go there.... which cemetery?

Wait! Wait a minute... with that nickname "Stoney" that U gave me (actually Juice did), I thought U were confusing me with another Board bit.. ooops, my bad, Boy, named Spookey. Have U seen her?

The STONEWALL is where U won't catch me unless I am being feted for something, as I will be in June. Butt anytime U meet there, let me know.
