I Should Have Known Better
Your Cheating Ways
I'll Keep On Holding On
A Need For Love
That's How Heartaches Are Made

It was tough to keep "Too Many Fish In The Sea" and "Danger, Heartbreak, Dead Ahead" off.

The Day You Take One, You Have To Take The Other

Still debating whether I should replace one with "Poor Little Rich Girl" or "The Stranger" or "The Hunter .............

This one is hard..

Hello All

1 : "Hunter Gets Captured By The Game"

2 : "Don't Mess with Bill"

( I have a theory that all U.K. Soul D.Js should have a copy of this to hand in case of a police raid on the premises!! )

3 : "The Day You Take One Your Gonna Have to Take The Other"

( All three above are Smokey at his lyrical best!! )

4 : "Too Many Fish in The Sea"

( Personally I would say its the cousin of "A Bird In The Hand"!! )

5 : "I'll Keep Holding On"

( Probably the first record I heard by them .. still sounds great!! )

The last track on Sophisticated Soul is "Someway Somehow" and not "Someday, Someway"

Top of pageBottom of page   By STONEWALL (68.237.59.78) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 08:18 pm:

U are "Spookey"!

No wonder U got "Someday, Someway" mixed up with "Someway, Somehow". Yeah, "You're The One" who wrote that all guy's things are 'salty'. See your entry on the "Buttered Popcorn" file (3/23).

Top of pageBottom of page   By STONEWALL (68.237.59.78) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 08:30 pm:

Spookey's corrected date entry re: "Buttered Popcorn" and .....salty parts is here! Although he has mutiple entries on this subject, including two on March 23, it's actually his entry on March 25th. His sentence starts with: "This guy must be Gay...." In fact, holy smoke, Spookey is the one who opened the 'case' on "Popcorn".

Bi the way, I'm all for this deeper analysis of people and songs and etc. Really, everyone is -- butt everyone just don't acknowledge it.

MY TOP 5 MARVELETTES:

1. Danger, Heartbreak Dead Ahead. I LIVE by the words that Wanda LaFaye Rodgers sang "...when there's nothing to be gained--don't KEEP holding on in vain..."

2. When I Needed You. From the "Marvelettes" LP.
Love when Wanda does a little "mmmmm-mmm-mmmm-mmm-mmmmmm..." during the bridge!!!!

3. Too Many Fish In The Sea

4. Barefootin. I like it better than the original! Great Gladys and Katherine background WITHOUT my beloved Andantes!!!!

5. My Baby Must Be A Magician. Once again, Wanda blows me away with her adlibs-" Presto chango Alacazam--I'm alright again--oh yes I am--all right--mmmm--mmmmmm...."

"Barefootin'" with THE MARVELETTES.

It is song #1 on their pink-framed album entitled THE MARVELETTES in late 1966. The positioning of the song leads one to believe that Motown was considering it for single release. The original was a top hit earlier in the same year, but it was by a solo, unimpressive male singer, named Robert Parker (from New Orleans), who also wrote the song. The catchy song carried the day for him, not his voice. Interestingly, he was known in the 1940s for his saxophone work and instrumentals. As a singer, he was a one-hit wonder.

Wanda does the song in a breezy and compelling way that would have been a hit -- especially by a girl group. The song sounds like it was written for the girls. Plus, it's a fun and dance song. A missed opportunity for "M" and The M's. Ironically, many people thought -- and still do -- that "Barefootin'" had been released by The Marvelettes.

Definitely a favorite; thanx for reminding me.

Stonewall, The Marvelettes used to open with that song around that time. When I saw Kat, Wanda & Gladys LIVE in '66 they came out doin "Barefootin'"(They were the co-stars of The Otis Redding Show).

Wow, Tony Russi. That is really great to hear. As I mentioned, that song seems tailor-made for THE MARVELETTES. Plus, I know a group of female impersonators, named THE MARIONETTES, who are going to do a tribute to THE MARVELETTES because of M-45, The Marvelettes' book, the Vocal Groups Hall of Fame and also as appreciation for ailing Wanda. Thanx to your valuable 411, I'm telling them to open up with "Barefootin'". Bi the way, they end their sequence with a song from "The Return of The Marvelettes": Someday!
