Did Mary do "Don't Mess With Bill?" I thought that was a Marvelettes tune.
By Soul Sister (65.43.144.46) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 01:33 am: |
boynextdoor;
Maybe my mind fools me but I thought they both recorded it because of a story that Bill Upchurch (bassist for the Supremes in Gil Askeys orchestra) once told me that involved him & Mary. (?) That was along time ago so I could be mistaken.

Hey Everlovin Boy, when I told Mary how much I liked Stop Right Here she laughed and said she thought that was one of the worse things she ever did...I love it & Benny is wild on those drums.

Thank you, Tony!
I LOVE that cut off the TWO LOVERS album. Mary
really wails (Wells!!!) on it, and, yes, Papa
Zita is wild on the drums. That track rocks!!!
By the way, I chose my name from one of Mary's
post-Motown recordings. Somehow calling myself
"Laughing Boy" just didn't seem to fit.

Tri-Phi, firstly -- and everyone else, too:
U are correct, this file was supposed to be for the WELLS portfolio at Motown. I noticed the same thing U did of a mixed bag so if U look at my choices above, I alternated my favorite MARY songs between Motown and non-Motown. Of course, many, many of Mary's post-Motown records would have been Top Ten hits if, in this case anyway, Bad Boy Berry & Co. didn't threaten virtually all of the radio stations with withholding of Motown product (D.R.S., Tempts, M.R.V., Tops, S.M.R., et al.) if they played MARY.
Most all of her songs post-Motown had that great, sexy, soulful sound to them in the inimitable MARY style. All of those songs were hits in the clubs and bars and most people -- no one on these boards -- knew that she left Motown.
In my comprehensive M.W. selections from her 4 record companies in the 1960s (whew!), I overlooked my actual all-time #1 MARY WELLS creation: "Gigolo" -- from the 1980s. I am so happy that I got to see her perform it many times, too!

Anyone (Randy? Spookey?) know the story behind Strange Love. It bombed as a single, I think the only Motown release which didnt chart at all. I don't think it was pulled early either....It wasnt that great but I would have thought it would have sold enough to creep onto the chart as she was hot at the time
