Lady, we just had them for 2 nights at Westbury last week, and when he starts Tracks of my Tears, and Gladys comes out and duets with him (with Marv Tarplin on guitar), it is just one of those moments that you wish could last forever.

Magic!

Okay, now you guys know that you can't do a top 5 for Gladys, it has to be at least 10!!!! I would agree with all of the one's mentioned, does anybody remember This Is Love- from the "Neither One Of Us " album. I don't think it was a single, but I remember that I loved that song as a child! (smile)

Gladys is my favorite singer, so I had to chime in on this thread:

1. Friendship Train ("It don't matter what you look, look, look like people!")
2. If I Were Your Woman ("I'd never, NO, NO, stop lovin' you!")
3. Help Me Make It Through The Night ("Come on and leeeead me through the ni-ight, oooo-hooooo")
4. On & On ("I know you feel like I feel...that's why we got a love that's ree-eal")
5. Neither One Of Us ("Go on together...livin' a li-iiiiiieeee!")

OK, those were my favorites of the hits, but I'm also crazy about:

Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone (1st version--which the group performed live frequently it seems. Shoulda been a single if you ask me.)

Who Is She (What Is She To You)--funky!

Oh! What A Love I Have Found

And This Is Love--I remember it, Charise. "Too much bubbly pink champagne/NOTHIN' left but hurt and pain!"

All I Need Is Time

Heaven Sent

Still Such A Thing

Keep An Eye

Add It Up

so many more...

I never heard it and was always curious.

I don't think I could stop at five, but my favorite b-side/album track is "Can't Give it up No More". That song is way underrated.

I'm surprised that no one had added "Is There a Place (In His Heart for Me)", which I believe was a flip side to "If I Were Your Woman". I like the Supremes' version of this song, too (on the New Ways LP).

Handsome,

I vaguely recall hearing a rendition of Keep An Eye by Diana Ross. For some reason I thought it was a Ross solo version. Like I say I only recall it vaguely...it was mid-tempo, bordering on slow, I believe.

I much prefer the GK&P version. It's up-tempo with Gladys wailin' (of course). I think Ashford & Simpson produced it, but for a long time I thought it was a Whitfield track. It fit quite well with some Whitfield stompers on the Nitty Gritty lp.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Reese (12.15.168.69) on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 05:12 pm:

Handsome and Largo:

Diana actually recorded KEEP AN EYE twice. Once with the Supremes on the LOVE CHILD album and once as Largo said, on her first solo album. The performances are almost identical, to the point that I wonder why A&S wasted time and money doing it again. I prefer the version with the Supremes.

As for the song itself, I think both the Supremes and the Pips did a great job on it. Plus A&S really deserve credit for making versions that fit each act like a glove. As Largo said, the Pips' version is similar to the uptempo stompers that Norman Whitfield was cutting on them. The Supremes' version is taken much slower and I find it to be rather dramatic.

Handsome: another opinion on "Keep An Eye". I prefer The Supremes' version to The Pips', for the reason Reese gave, that it's a very dramatic song and the slow rhythm seems more appropiate to the story being told. Knowing how Gladys Knight handled drama in songs like "The Boy from Crosstown" and "It Should Have Been Me", it could have been a masterpiece if done in The Supremes' tempo. Gladys is so good that even fast songs like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "End of Our Road", or with a funky beat like "Who Is She", do not lose their dramatic impact, but in this case, after listening to The Supremes' version first, I prefer that tempo. Ashford and Simpson experimented a lot with the song, because the Diana Ross version is slightly faster than The Supremes' (actually, I think it's Diana Ross & The Andantes.)

I remember all of these great songs. And to everyone that posted you all's selections kinda brought back some memories, and I didn't wanna post the same songs and posted some of my oown selections, that some folk in this thread may had forgotten about sorta? GK&P'S we're an all rounded
vocalgroup who could sing up/mid/slow tempo material and torch songs as well. It seemed when they we're with Soul/Motown weren't given the best material. However, whatever song that we're placed in front of them they turned each and every song into a gem. Which is saying a lot.

Top of pageBottom of page   By soultwine (195.93.34.12) on Sunday, April 04, 2004 - 04:25 pm:

Well...hardly anyone has mentioned their Maxx label tracks with the great Van McCoy contributing most of the fantastic material. For me their BEST work..
And they were the best singers i've ever experienced live until the Peabo Bryson concert at Hammersmith, London some years later.Talk about put you under a spell!.
but there are other great GK&TP obscurities not mentioned like.. "Friendly persuasion".
Keep digging.
